Is Pixar "Eyeballing" Ant-Man?
Source:Entertainment Weekly
September 7, 2009

One week ago, the Walt Disney Company made the shocking announcement they were buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, leading to all sorts of speculation about what that meant for both companies, including thoughts on the creative possibilities, some more serious than others. As sudden as the news and its impact hit the internet with only a few immediate questions being answered, one of the more interesting news bits to come out of the merger appeared in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly where it stated:

"Pixar is said to already be eyeballing an Ant-Man movie."

Readers of Superhero Hype! will be aware that British filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) has been developing a project based on Marvel's scientifically shrinking superhero for many years, having even appeared on Marvel Studios' Comic-Con panel way back in 2006 to talk about it. (You can read Superhero Hype!'s exclusive interview from that time here.) Even so, Marvel Studios has remained mum about any plans to go forward with the project since then, setting release dates for movies based on Thor, Captain America and the Avengers, while neglecting the previously-announced project.

Anyone reading the statement in Entertainment Weekly might immediately assume it means Pixar would do a CG-animated version of the Marvel second-stringer in a similar manner as their hit The Incredibles, but that might not be the case at all. Currently, Pixar Studios is in pre-production on a live action movie based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars, so the idea of Pixar "eyeballing" the already-scripted project could mean they might actively try to finance and produce a live action movie, taking the reins and burden off of Marvel Studios.

Whether or not that will mean that Edgar Wright is in the director's chair is another question that will need to be answered eventually. Currently, Wright is just starting what could be a long post-production process on his third movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World for Universal, based on the graphic novel series from Bryan Lee O'Malley; that also hasn't set a release date. Chances are that Pixar will be involved in developing the current script further, but Wright has other projects he could tackle if Ant-Man wasn't ready to go once "Scott Pilgrim" is finished.

We'll have to see how this potential news pans out, but in the meantime, what do you think about Disney and Pixar Studios picking up the ball and running with an Ant-Man movie?

This project keeps getting interesting. Hopefully it'll get done.

Has Pixar done anything except CG animation? I would hate Antman to go that way. Is this a precursor for a tongue and cheek version like the incredibles? My hope is fading quickly.

wow, that didn't take long

Uh, no offense Zene4567, but did you read the article?

The squash and stretch animation style of Pixar works for animated films like the Incredibles, but does not work for live action marvel films where the animation and style has to be grounded in reality.
The last time I saw blood in a disney film was Finding Nemo and UP... and thats not exactly the kind of blood Marvel fans go for.
Plus I like it when other studios have a hand in the projects like ILM, Sony Imageworks, Weta, Framestore, etc.
Maybe Pixar has a whole set of cards up their sleeve.

All I can say is YES!!!!

Ant-Man is a character that, in theory, is so ridiculous, that only a team like Pixar could make the film and make us truly care. I'm hoping for live-action, and really hoping they keep Edgar Wright at least somewhat involved, although I'd rather see him finish his Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy with Pegg and Frost first.

I wonder how will Marvel and Pixar deal with anti-heroes like Punisher. Mature themes like revenge and death is a re-occuring theme in the marvel universe. Im not sure that translates well into the Disney Universe. I think the closest to edgy Disney distributed films were Pirates and Nation Treasure. I dont think Disney could get as edgy as District 9.

You Marvel boys dont seem so tough now that Mickey Mouse is your new editor

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Serves yer right.

We don't know whether it is going to be live action or CG Animation. I was actually thinking that Hank Pym and his wife would get a cameo in Iron Man 2 or possibly Thor when he is on earth. I would think they would introduce the two characters at least in a small way, maybe not as Ant-Man and Wasp but just as scientests, this way when the Avengers is made the audience will already know who they are.

Re:DC RULES!!!!

Yes they sure do rule! How can they not rule with movies like:

1. The Return of Swamp Thing
2. Supergirl
3. Superman 3, 4 and returns
4. Batman forever
5. Batman and Robin
6. Steel
7. Cat woman

@ DC rules..,ummm you do realize that Disney does release adult oriented pictures don't you? For example, in 1993 they bought Miramax, which has since then released, Clerks, The Crow, Pulp Fiction, Exotica, Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead, Trainspotting, Hard Core Logo, Chasing Amy, No Country for Old Men, Sin City, and the list goes on.....All these are ,technically speaking, Disney movies. I don't think we Marvel fans have anything to worry about. But nice try though.

Posted by: DC RULES!!!! on September 7, 2009 at 13:05:54

Im sorry. But I genuinely believe Disney will drag Marvel down. I may be wrong, but thats what I predict.

Then you fans will stop being so smug and attacking DC fans.

Disney will bring Marvels reputation down at rock bottom.

I'd see an Edgar Wright Ant-Man movie with Simon Pegg in the lead role. As for Pixars involvement as the effects house, I highly doubt it. They stick to cartoons I don't think they will ever nor should venture into becoming providers of live action special effects. And please Pixar don't touch Marvel properties if you're not going to stick to the realistic style of the comics. I'd love to see Marvel movie made completely on the computer like Beowulf or Avatar. This would eliminate all lame excuses about colorful costumes and other such nonsense. I could even picture Blur Studios at the helm after seeing their awesome CG cut scenes for Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

I dont like the idea of Disney taking over Marvel, but from what GammaBob said,Marvel fans shouldn't really fear anything. If anything, this could be a revolutionary step for both companies.

Not the whole Marvel VS DC thing again. Why cant fans of each comic just shake hands? They are companies that print comics that we enjoy. Its a childish schoolyard argument.

Hasnt any Superhero taught us anything? United we stand. Divided we fall. I dont know if a Superhero did say that, but thats basically Justice League and The Avengers summed up as inspiration.

My name says what kind of antman movie I want to see I want to the the "Irredeemable Antman" movie

Posted by: MovieFan on September 7, 2009 at 13:39:52

I love disney but god help us. We are probably going to see the end of good comic book movie adaptations because disney is going to water down the content so much to fit in with the kid friendly disney attitude blah blah blah. I really hope im wrong..

Posted by: Bernard de Wet on September 7, 2009 at 13:41:54

This sounds great!! I really hope that Ant-Man and the WASP will be in the Avengers movie as well!!

Hopefully they will be!!

now that disney owns marvel, if they are looking for pixar material i would suggest howard the duck.

Posted by: RadioShack Man on September 7, 2009 at 13:53:39

If they make an Ant-Man movie, will it include Janet, AKA Wasp? And if it does include her, will it involve the domestic violence between the two? We all know that Hank Pym beat the crap out of Janet a few times... will Disney allow that?

Posted by: FF on September 7, 2009 at 13:55:12

DOO ITTTT

Posted by: Ju? on September 7, 2009 at 14:04:16

See? Disney is gonna do right by Marvel/

Posted by: Demondra on September 7, 2009 at 14:07:55

@bob: Marvel said it wasnt going to be producing anymore R Rated movies a while ago. There is no where as much money in it vs. their PG-13 lineup. Marvel couldnt have been purchased by a better company. Their entertainment portfolios are practically the same.
