Len Wiseman Takes on Shrapnel

The Hollywood Reporter says that Len Wiseman will develop and direct a film adaptation of the graphic novel "Shrapnel" for Radical Pictures.

The graphic novel describes a sci-fi future where humans have colonized the solar system and formed a Solar Alliance to govern the planets. The story focuses on Venus, the last rebellious holdout, and a self-exiled former Marine who teaches the colonists how to fight back.

"I am really drawn to the reluctant-hero story," said Wiseman, who noted that the last hero he directed--John McClane in Live Free or Die Hard--fit that archetypal mold.

Nick Sagan and Zombie Studios chief Mark Long created the property. Radical principal Barry Levine will produce with Wiseman and Mark Gordon. Long and Radical's Jesse Berger will executive produce.

Being developed as a live-action film, a 3D approach is considered possible. A video game is planned with Zombie Studios.

Wiseman is attached to direct Motorcade at DreamWorks and also will helm the studio's adaptation of the comic book Atlantis Rising for a summer 2011 release. Wiseman also plans to direct the video game adaptation Gears of War for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. and is producing the original sci-fi action thriller Nonstop for DreamWorks.

COOL

It might be me - I know it's not copying it - but it seems like they are taking advantage of Avatar - the James Cameron one - because the storyline is basically the same. Because it sounds like the Marine is protecting the colony from his own people just like the Avatar storyline. But that's just my take on what I "think" the Avatar storyline is - from what I've heard - and this seems like it is similar.

What I mean by "taking advantage of" is riding the coattails, by the by.

so people who make movies are willing to risk their money on making movies about graphic novels that no one has ever heard of (such as this one)but they're too afraid to fund a halo movie which pretty much the whole world has heard of???? this really has nothing to do with this article I just think a live action halo movie would be sweet and I would totally go see it!!!!

Wow, he's taking on a lot of projects. I just want to see Gears first. I guess we'll have to wait until Saturday after the Gears panel to find out where they're at with it.

Sounds more like the concept behind "Serenity."

Nathallion,

I understand where you're coming from, but can you imagine the amount of pressure there would be on the Halo movie just because of the fact that it's so popular? I wouldn't touch it! It would be way easier to take on something like this that doesn't have as big of a following and as many fanboys to piss off. I'm not saying that's why a Halo movie isn't happening, that is just how I view the whole situation. I'm actually surprised there isn't already a Halo movie. With the amount of money that movie would rake in (whether the movie be good or bad), I can't believe a studio hasn't really jumped on it!

On the subject of this movie, it sounds a little generic, but the colonization of the universe thing sounds pretty cool. It could go either way (suck or rule).

This guy can make an action picture, but he's juggling too many projects. If Atlantis Rising is set for Summer 2011, that would have to be his first project, to be shooting by early-mid next year. This Shrapnel gig won't happen to 2015 likely.

I own this GN, its a great adult story with deep charactors. I understand Radical is raking it in w/ new publisher awards and aims for GN's that are intended to be source material for film projects. It appears to be a great way to create a concept and shop it around studios.

If you haven't heard of Radical or Shrapnel, then I suggest you talk to your local comic retailer or find a better one.

I forgot to add, the comic itself is topshelf. The quality of the book is higher than the better books. Great art & story at an extremely good price.

To all you "nay" sayers who "haven't heard of the comic", this title is NEW from a recently NEW publisher (Radical)! Instead of talking **** about somethig you know nothing about, try reading the book first before you open your stupid mouths. By the way, the comicbook was badass, so i'm excited that it's going to be made into a movie.
