July 6, 2009

Imagi Studios debuted a new teaser for Gatchaman at the 2009 Anime Expo that took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend. You can watch the clip below!

Directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT), the big screen adaptation is based on the 1970s Japanese TV series "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman." Aired in the U.S. as "Battle of the Planets" and "G-Force," it soon became a widely popular syndicated TV series. Gatchaman is set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

That's just a bunch of crap! Looks like a bad video game.

@oklahoma fan: Dude seriously, ANYTHING is going to be way better than Dragonball Evolution. It is the undeniable truth: DB was, IS and WILL BE the hell whole of anime-made-real action movie of all time (Street Fighter I believe is in a tie).
Looking forward to this one. I just hope they get this one right. Please DO NOT ruin this one too. BTW, TMNT was cool.

Let's hope he didn't write the script too. The TMNT storyline was a disaster.

TMNT was great. Are you seriously expecting a TDK script? This is about teenage mutant ninja turtles. It's suppose to be easy for kids to follow.

Posted by: Vegettosonlab on July 6, 2009 at 16:46:13

Don't know about this. It's directed by the same guy that TMNT.

I'm still wondering if the Gatchaman costumes are going to look like the traditional bird designs or not. Could be good stuff, though.

Posted by: odraciR on July 6, 2009 at 16:51:02

Is this the movie or the game? Gona blow in europe, no one nows Gatchaman, or g-force or whatever. At least i hope it´s going to be a good movie for kids.

Looks pretty decent. Then again, I'm always biased towards animated films like this, being an animation fan and all.

Posted by: Zeke Staine on July 6, 2009 at 16:52:29

Lizard if you pause at 39 you can see all of them and they kept the designs

Posted by: Microdroid on July 6, 2009 at 16:56:43

yer it does look better than Dragonball Evolution but so does Last Air Bender

It went so fast, I didn't see much. On the TV cartoon, didn't the plane turn into a phoenix bird or something. I wonder if they will show that.

I thought it was gonna be live action ... T.T

Man, this whole year just sucks completely movie-wise. Does this never end?
Let's just skip to 2010 already..

Posted by: eight_card on July 7, 2009 at 01:20:50

this is kinda cool; I actually shot this footage at the Anime Expo this past weekend, and posted it on YouTube after getting home that evening...never expected it to end up on 'SuperHeroHype'...good times :)

Those costume designs lok too ultramodern.
The 90s animated Gatchaman costumes should have been used instead.

Originally I was not going to blame Monroe for how terribly TMNT turned out, but after seeing this trailer... I'm starting to see a trend. He seems like a good guy, but good intentions only get you so far... and as for IMAGI, they really need to step up their game a bit, they are way behind the curve if they want to keep up with Pixar/Dreamworks quality stuff.
