No Y: The Last Man for Shia LaBeouf
Source:Wizard
June 9, 2009

Almost two years ago, it was announced the D.J. Caruso would direct and Carl Ellsworth would write an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's Y: The Last Man.

Since then, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Shia LaBeouf's name has come up numerous times as being in talks to play the lead role of Yorick Brown, the lone survivor of a plague that wipes out all males on the planet. The project would have reunited him with Caruso, who directed LaBeouf in Eagle Eye and Disturbia.

But now, LaBeouf tells Wizard magazine that Yorick is too similar to his "Transformers" role of Sam Witwicky.

"You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder," said LaBeouf of Yorick's sidekick Ampersand. "I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.

He added, "I'm not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."

yeah like he really needs another franchise to crap on?

Posted by: ImReallyNotSerious on June 9, 2009 at 10:53:12

I don't why people hate him so much. He's not a bad actor and if anyone is to blame for Transformers he's FAR down the line, dumbasses.

Posted by: G on June 9, 2009 at 10:53:43

It's based on a one shot Graphic Novel. Hard to make a "franchise" with one film. Way to sound smart bud.

I don't really like Shia. I pray to God they never make a "Mutt" Jones movie.

Posted by: IWasBeingSerious on June 9, 2009 at 10:54:07

Hell, I don't know where that name came from...but I was really serious.

Posted by: Hooey on June 9, 2009 at 10:59:35

Y: The Last Man could in no way be told in one single movie. It'd have to be a franchise. Have you read it at all? There's 10 volumes. Fitting that much story into one movie would be the worst thing you could do. Two movies at least. If I recall, it had more issues than Watchmen did, and they couldn't fit everything into a nearly 3 hour movie.

I never wanted Shia for Yorick. In fact, I don't know who would work. Chris Pine? HAHA.

I don't mind Shia and I respect his reason for backing out. Now that he's backed out they're gonna get Zac Efron. LMAO that would make an awesome movie...

Posted by: Johnny Drama on June 9, 2009 at 11:03:44

Damn, I was actually looking forward to seeing him in that role....

Posted by: Hey-oh! on June 9, 2009 at 11:07:16

Zac Efron would be the WORST casting choice. I'm willing to bet money the capuchin they use for Ampersand would claw his eyes out on set.

I dont know. If I'm a young single guy, I'd find the idea of working with a mostly young female cast a bit more appealing that LeBuff seems to.

Posted by: GorillaMonsooon on June 9, 2009 at 11:09:47

he was perfect for the role but maybe a little too perfect...i respect him as an acter (now) and his decision. and Transformers was awesome

Is it just me or is almost every character that Shia LaBeouf plays is the same? He puts out the fidgety coward vibe.

Posted by: matthooper on June 9, 2009 at 11:10:32

Right, blame LaBeouf for nuking the fridge or making crappy mindless robot movies. He doesn't know these movies will suck when he signs on the dotted line.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Dull, sucked for about 100 reasons before you get to LaBeouf.

Watchman is 12 count them TWELVE issues and Zak Snyder did a fine job making it in a 3 hour film. I haven't read Y and don't intend to. A guy and his monkey??? No thanks.

Posted by: BIGW1966 on June 9, 2009 at 11:14:55

He just seems like an Ordinary guy stuck in an extrordinary situation.

Wow Shia, you mean like Mutt Jones in The indy film Who is a greaser punk who ends up fighting Russians and evil midgets and Aliens?

You mean like the kid you played in Disturbia who was a normal kid who thought his neighbor was a murderer and ended up thrust into a extrordinary situation?

Or how about the guy you played in Eagle Eye who was just a normal dude whose. Twin Brother managed to get him thrust into an extrordinary situation?
I like your acting but your really a dumbass.

Films exist upon conflict. They evolve because the main character is thrust into an extreme situation.
Without conflict, without a character being put into a situation that provides risk or growth of the character, you are left with nothing but a couple of hours of boring nothingness.

the simple fact that Shia thinks Yorick is just "Sam with a monkey on his shoulder" clearly shows this inflated ego of an actor should not be in the film as he does not grasp it in the least.

I used to like this kid (A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, Holes), but now (Eagle Eye, Transformers) he is just about as "Tom Cruise circa War of The Worlds" as you can get.

Posted by: THETRUTH on June 9, 2009 at 11:23:30

Anyone who says Shia is not a good actor can just go to acting class and rethink that! this guy is one of the greatest young actors, and personally he spruced up indy! Mutt was awesome, everything I have seem him in is great and every movie he is in would actually kinda suck without him! dont blame him for anything. he is a great actor. a personality actor I agree, but its awesome!

I think G has become a little confused over the difference between trade paperback volumes that collect issues and issues themselves. The twelve issues of watchmen make up the one volume of Watchmen. The 10 volumes of Y the last man collect 60 count them SIXTY issues. It needs a franchise. Idiots make me smile sometimes.

Posted by: Thaddeus on June 9, 2009 at 11:40:37

Y the Last Man is a GREAT series. Dismissing it as a "man and his monkey" is just willful ignorance.

Yorick Brown is not very similar to Sam Witwicky, if Shia LaBeouf can't see that then I'm glad that he won't be doing it.

Posted by: bjk! on June 9, 2009 at 11:48:43

G is a moron. The 60 issues long, 7 years. This could make one good movie.

Posted by: Chuck on June 9, 2009 at 11:52:52

I´ll preffer Zachary Levi... He will be great in that role.. similar to Pia Guerra art

Posted by: Monte Cristo on June 9, 2009 at 11:58:45

He's talking about how the Writer and Director are going for a story character more like Sam than Yorick from Y: The Last Man, graphic novel. That's why he doesn't feel like he should do it.

Posted by: Tyler Winn on June 9, 2009 at 11:59:04

Shia LaBeouf is so right York sounds like a blatant ripoff of sam witwicky. Its disgracing to the transformers series to associate it with such trash as Y: The Last Man. In fact if this movie is made it will most likely be a shot for shot remake of Transformers.

Posted by: BEN HUR on June 9, 2009 at 12:03:40

Proves that he's trying to branch out and not be pigeonholed as the sci-fi/action franchise guy. Good for him. Amped to see what he could do under Oliver Stone's direction opposite Michael Douglas in Wall Street sequel and in the Associate, two projects that could change the course of his career.

Posted by: websnap on June 9, 2009 at 12:04:06

From this, I get the feeling he's trying to court different roles and the fact that he's comparing Sam Witwicky to Yorick Brown is kind of evident of that. The characters do seem similar compared to other roles that he may be trying to attract. As an actor, he seems to be looking for some protection from typecasting, and that makes sense in the long run of a career. Also, we fans of the material need to be a little less sensitive when it come to clips of interviews out of context. We need to drop the "all or nothing" "with us or against us" devotion to our popular art. Don't look at he comment as a slight against the work, but rather not feeling challenged or drawn to the role. Doesn't that just free up the role for someone new?

Posted by: Smackie on June 9, 2009 at 12:17:23

Tyler Winn makes me giggle.

Y: that last man is much more intricate than Transformers is. I love transformers but compared to such an advanced story like Y, transformers is inadequate. Transformers = an entertaining popcorn movie.

Y: That Last Man is a bit more than that.

@ websnap,
I agree with you sir. Quite wise.

Shia is a good actor nonetheless.
