ShoWest: Third Men in Black in Development!
Source:Edward Douglas
April 1, 2009

At the Sony Pictures presentation of their upcoming summer line-up, Sony President of Worldwide Distribution Rory Bruer introduced the footage to be shown--see our description for the first-ever footage for Neil Blomkamp's District 9 here--and said how excited they were about their upcoming line-up for the summer, but also how they are looking forward to 2010 and 2011.

On the latter half of that timeline, he mentioned in passing the previously announced Spider-Man 4 from Sam Raimi and the long-rumored Ghostbusters 3, but the biggest surprise was that Sony plans to go back to the well and make a third "Men in Black" movie as well.

This was the first announcement that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones might be back together again, although no further details were given in terms of how far along they are in development, whether there's a script in the works or whether indeed, it will be joining Spider-Man 4 in Sony's summer of 2011.

We expect to hear more on this soon!

I'm happy for the Men in Black return, but I don't know how much more they can do. The first was almost groundbreaking in terms of its freshness and vfx. The second didn't really do anything for me at all. In fact, it was a rental, and the best part of the whole dvd was the ChubbChubbs short. I have no doubt in the arsenal of effects wizards at Sony, but I really want a compelling story if they decided bring the guys in black back.

I don't think Tommy Lee will be in it..his character retired in the second one..and Will got a new female partner.

I feel a little nostalgic past creeping back into Hollywood. Trasformers, GI Joe, and now Ghost Busters. It seems the Old is the New black. (See what I just did there. Men in Black is the new fad.)

Really? REALLY?
I mean, I loved the first one! But the second was little more than a re-hash of the first. Same basic plot! Big, bad alien comes to Earth in search of something of great power disguised a piece of jewelry (or cat's collar). Instead of Kay recruting Jay, it was Jay re-recruting Kay. Let's just hope they have some better ideas this time around.

I for one welcome a new MIB film. The last one wasn't all that good, but if they put some effort in the story, the next one can be cool.
