Zac Efron Talks Jonny Quest Movie

"High School Musical" franchise star Zac Efron talked to Moviehole about possibly starring in a live-action adaptation of "Jonny Quest" at Warner Bros. Pictures. Race to Witch Mountain director Andy Fick and star Dwayne Johnson are circling the project as well.

Efron would play the title role, while Johnson would play Race Bannon. The popular 1960s animated Hanna-Barbera TV series revolved around a young boy who travels the world with his scientist father, adopted brother from India, Bandit the bulldog, and a government agent (Bannon) assigned to protect them as they go on their adventures investigating scientific mysteries.

Efron says the project is in its early stages. "It's a long, long process. It's so hard when people start leaking tidbits. They're very, very early on [with it] – not that it won't happen happen, it's just early."

A few weeks ago, Johnson commented on the script. "I don't know if you've read the latest [draft] but it's awesome and it's badass... I hadn't read an action script like that in a LONG time. And that action was unbelievable. That will happen."

The show, which is owned by Warner Bros. Animation, aired during primetime on ABC in 1964, lasting only one season. It was updated in the late '80s and '90s as "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest" on the Cartoon Network. The property has also been spun off as a comic book from DC.

Thats weird i was recently wondering if they'd ever make a Johnny Quest movie.

I just cant see this guy in the role...he's WAY too old.

See, if Zac Efron was cast as Speed Racer, it would have NOT bombed. WB would be smart to get him for this film.

JQ isn't that sacred to me, but I am sick of the idea that this putz is about to clutter up movies best left for actual actors. And yes, he is too old for the part. It's like casting a 14 year old Mcauley Culkin as Richie Rich.

Efron is too old.
And Dwayne Johnson had better be rockin that sweet 60's beard action

They need to get someone good to play in this film

Sadly we will get the rock this zack kid (who is he anyway), and generic ethnic character actor wilmer valderama as hadji. . . yuck

If they want older get the kid from malcolm in the middle for Jonny. . . he might work

I was never really into Quest, but neither was I into Gi Joe, so I might check this movie out.

The Rock as Race. No way. Thats a terrible idea

Posted by: SWEET! on March 16, 2009 at 17:13:56

BRING IT ON! it's about time the pretty boy efron gets away from disney. but with the rock attachted it makes me thinks this is going to be all for kids. kids who have no idea wtf this is. make this **** pg13 and it'll rock the box office.

No no no no no. No Zac Efron and definitely has to have Bruce Willis as Race Bannon

Posted by: ayenlou on March 16, 2009 at 17:23:13

I'm willing to bet that the kid Hadji will be played by the slumdog millionaire kid LOL

Who or what in the "BLUE HELL" is Johnny Quest????

Posted by: ukulelemike on March 16, 2009 at 17:36:27

The Rock can play Dash O'Pepper! "I'll throw a barrel at it!"

Posted by: Air Force One on March 16, 2009 at 17:59:17

Johnny Quest would be cool. Yet they should probably get someone younger for the part. As for Dwayne Johnson? Why not? At least he will return to the action genre. Hopefully we will have a space ghost movie afterward.

Posted by: Dwayne Johnson on March 16, 2009 at 18:02:37

@ Lion-0 for President. I see to it that the producers let me grow a beard.

Posted by: Etrigan on March 16, 2009 at 18:10:38

@Kal-El85

Jonny Quest is a rip off of the Venture Bros.
Or something like that...

Posted by: First Son on March 16, 2009 at 18:11:01

Anderson Cooper should be Race Bannon

Posted by: Etrigan on March 16, 2009 at 18:11:46

The Rock would be great for Space Ghost too!

Posted by: GreenNinjaN on March 16, 2009 at 18:13:48

Unless they plan on dying The Rock's hair white I don't see him playing Race very well. As for Johnny well it would be nice to see them get a really good child actor for the role but I'm thinking they're gonna go for a more Venture Brothers age range with Johnny like 16-19 years old. All this means is that those of us with any childhood memories of this show are about to wish they didn't.

Posted by: manoftommorow13010 on March 16, 2009 at 18:21:19

Please, please, please, please don't rape every phenomenal memory from my childhood that involves this incredible show. The Rock as Race is atrocious.

Posted by: mephar on March 16, 2009 at 18:24:10

@Etrigan

How can it be a rip off of Venture Bros. when it predates VB by nearly 40 years?

Posted by: Anicent Fanboy on March 16, 2009 at 18:28:49

As always just mere speculation at this point. Nothing to get excited about.
Zac's currently only 8 years too old for the part. By the time the film could get made he'd be about 23. Which would make just 10 years too old.
Whatever, just speculation.
And wasn't Dwayne Johnson supposed to be Black Adam?
