Stephen Norrington to Reinvent The Crow
Source:Variety
December 14, 2008

Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of The Crow, based on the comic created by James O'Barr, says Variety.

Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed adaptation, in which rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance.

For Norrington, The Crow deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with Blade, Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a feature film since.

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said.

Wow... there gonna **** this one up trying to redo the crow... first one is the best and forever will be... i can't see how they could redo this after 4? of them have been made already?

trying to do a hulk and punisher thing here?

Posted by: Hulk4Life on December 14, 2008 at 23:57:51

WTF?!?!?! the crow was such a fantastic film! brandon lee was amazing in it. truely a breakthrough performance.

why would norrington mess with that? we saw blade and we saw LXG. hit talents as limited in my opinion!

Proyas still rocks. everything he touches rocks hard!

piss off norrington!

Can't wait.....until Norrington bails on this just like he did Clash of the Titans. That quote almost made me check my calender to see if it was April 1st. A "almost documentary style" Crow movie? Who the hell wants to see that? The gothic style is what made it work. Does Norrington actually think a "realistic" version of the Crow wouldn't be completely laughable?

I don't wanna sound like the run-of-the-mill, I-have-nothing-original-to-say poster, but I think this is a bad idea. I'm all in favor of the beboots that have been done in recent years, because the franchises have needed them (Batman, Incredible Hulk, Punisher). And I'm totally in favor of future reboots for franchises that need them (Superman, Daredevil, Ghost Rider). But this is a reboot that is completely unnecessary. The original Crow is neither too old or obscure to be appreciated by todays' audiences, nor was it a bad movie--it was very good, in fact.

They should leave The Crow the hell alone.

finally!!!!

a REAL Pt. 2!! this is what this will always be, the best non sequel sequel ever! have you seen the other crap movies??

Posted by: retronaz on December 15, 2008 at 00:02:06

does anyone else think that this is another attempt by the studios to jump on the TDK bandwagon?

the joker and the crow are similar in appearance i guess...

also with the more realistic style...

I hate hollywood!!! Remaking or im sorry a reinvention or The crow would be like remaking The Dark knight. The crow is almost perfect on every aspect. Why Why do they have to screw with a good thing. How about you make a direct sequel to the crow because city of angels sucked so bad and so did every other horrible sequel. Proyas and his style is what made the crow what it is and of course the awesome brandon lee made it what it is. I do think Stephen Norrington did a fantastic job with blade and i thought he did what he could with The League, but please dont touch the crow.

Posted by: nelson on December 15, 2008 at 00:03:02

was'nt the crow already tainted by its horrible sequels but i stil lfeel it should be left alone the crow was already a great film leave it the style was very gritty i feel they will fx it up

man reboot of hulk i think was good and cant wait for another one with norton in it... punisher wont comment til i see it.. maybe it'll be 3rd time lucky with that film...

but this definately doesnt need a reboot... i enjoyed the first crow even now after over 10 years i think it's good...

Brandon Lee was the Crow!

The movies that followed were hack jobs and to try and re invent this is shameless. Another attempt by Whorrywood to make money from a dark, moody film while Dark Knight (yes I said it) is still on the minds of the public.

Hehe - WOW.

The same guy who ****ed up LXG will be doing the same to The Crow...

...it's like Brett Ratner taking on Batman or Iron Man after X3

Posted by: H00H on December 15, 2008 at 00:15:53

We already a reinvention of the Crow, Heath Ledger played the crow in TDK.

Posted by: speedyaaa on December 15, 2008 at 00:19:35

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized". Huh? Has this guy ever read the source material. There is a reason that Proyas' movie looked the way it did, BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE ORIGINAL COMIC WAS LIKE!!! I swear this really pisses me off. He probably thought that LXG was too gothic and stylized, and he did a brilliant job adapting that. If you don't like the way a story looks and plays out I have an idea for ya. Go write something original!

I actually wouldn't mind it. And the Crow is one of my favorite movies of all time.

It can be good so long as they make it truer to the source material then the original was. I love the first one but it strayed a lot from the original graphic novel by O'Barr

No, just no.

Oh MAAAANNN!!!! Listen Stephen Norrington ,just because it's based on a comic book ,it would be a good idea to "reinvent" The Crow.I know ,comic book based movies are in,I get it.But there are certain comics books you gotta stay away, especially when they are made it.

Posted by: Triad on December 15, 2008 at 00:23:08

Not too excited about this one. I share the sentiment that they shouldn't mess with a movie that already worked the first time.
I'll still go see it, though. It could be cool even if it's a blatant attempt to cash in on TDK's dark & edgy realism style.

Posted by: Red on December 15, 2008 at 00:24:58

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Can no one come up with an original idea these days!!? Why mess with a classic?!! I have officially had it with these remakes!! I will not see this movie!!

Posted by: GammaBob on December 15, 2008 at 00:29:30

So what's this, every movie now in which the good guy wears black is going to be considered as "jumping on the Dark Knight bandwagon"?

As far as the realistic approach. The original graphic novel was a lot more gritty and urban, not as stylish or surreal as the movie was.
In fact in the graphic novel there is no actual bird, it is never really explained how he came back from the dead. There is a bird that talks to him but it's portrayed as a manifestation of his subconscious. No one else can see or here it because it isn't really there. Thus the "realistic, hard-edged and mysterious" approach

I'm really hoping they're trying for something closer to the source material then the Brandon Lee version.

So long as it's done right I could be potentially very excited about this.

p.s.: although i agree with Some of what "not a tumor" said, to say that remaking The Crow is just capitolizing on The Dark Knight's brooding success is RETARDED. Not only was The Crow the first dark hero ever put onto the big screen, but he still IS the darkest hero to be put on the big screen! Sure Bruce Wayne's parents got killed, like 20 years ago (i'm talkin comic time here), but did he get pushed out of a window while watching an ENTIRE GANG of theives rape and murder his wife!? I mean: come on!!!

Posted by: A.C.T. on December 15, 2008 at 00:37:29

The first one is a classic. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the film, if he wants to re-do The Crow, he need not step on the feet of pure genius to cause an interest. Stick to the source material and you have my blessing. nuff said.

oh look. another remake.

Posted by: cole on December 15, 2008 at 00:39:11

hats off to this generation's originality.

ONE OF THE MOST STUPID HOLLYWOOD'S MOVES IN 2008.!

1. Smith / Spielberg for 'Oldboy'
2. Smith Jr. for 'Karate Kid'

I'd rather see a remake of "The Different Strokes" starring Samuel L. Jackson and Morgan Freeman as Arnold and Willis. Seriously, 'Whatchyoutalkin'bout' makin' a remake of this movie?
