Kenneth Branagh Talks Thor
Source:MTV
December 13, 2008

MTV got a chance to talk to Valkyrie Kenneth Branagh on Saturday about directing Marvel Studios' upcoming Thor adaptation, scheduled for a July 16, 2010 release. Here's a clip:

So what's the appeal of "Thor," Kenneth? "To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures," he enthused.

He continued excitedly, "There's science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It's based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way."

Groovy. Branagh makes me that much more interested in seeing this.

Sweet I can't wait and I really can't wait for the moment all the movies come together for THE AVENGERS!

Thor, yes

Let's just stay toward the comic book version and not that Thor on "The Incredible Hulk" show back in the early 80's please!!!!!! Oh, and no Triple H uggghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Double D on December 13, 2008 at 23:33:00

Thor is going to be very hard to pull off.

Thor should stand alone ... his inclusion in the Avengers is going to screw everything up. If you listen carefully to Favreau, he's scared to death of the what Thor's story will do to his reality-based vision for the Avengers, which will be laden with military-tech characters like Iron Man, Hulk and Cap. Here's my quick fix: insert Hawkeye instead of Thor - Hawkeye is the PERFECT military-tech character to insert into the movie, especially the newly re-imagined Hawkeye from The Ultimates.

Thor's inter-dimensional stuff and the hammer and the Loki ... yikes, I'm not so sure. By itself, cool, Thor movie, rock on like The Punisher or Wonder Woman in your own little movie. I'm not down with Thor ruining military-based continuity that worked so well in Iron Man and Hulk (not to mention Cap).

Speaking or old Cap, is it me, or is NBC's Heroes' becoming more and more of a Marvel rip-off every day? Now they've bastardized the Cap storyline with that actor from USA's The 4400.

I hope he doesn't go all shakespeare on it,I mean show off thor's power.Make him the hero he's suppose to be and try not to make an art film. That's what happened on the first Hulk movie, way to serious.Have fun with it.

i agree with maul rats, this story is really easy to screw up. Hawkeye would be perfect as a replacement.

Posted by: Iron Head on December 14, 2008 at 00:01:54

Unfortunately Thor is going to be the most difficult character to explain. At the same time I don't want an Avengers movie without him.

Posted by: D. Brandon Thomas on December 14, 2008 at 00:06:35

I agree with Maul Rats, Thor wouldn't seem to fit into the Avengers but I think that, if they decide to include Thor, he should be a neutral character due to his immortality and his concern for Mother Nature. It is only when the whole of mankind is threatened that Thor should come in and kill ass. Other than that, I can't envision Thor hanging with Caps and Iron Man at S.H.I.E.L.D.

they should handle Thor just as they did in the comics...same origin, same point of entry. If Loki is the main villain then that's your in right there. Like I've said before, the Gods are just beings from an other dimension whose physics and science are more advanced than earth's. If it's treated in such a way then it won't mess with what's been done with Iron-Man...quit being so damned ****...it's based on a comic for goodness sake, people making a suit of armor and flying around is hardly realistic, nor is a nerdy scientist turning into a huge, green monster...give me a break people. If too much concern is put into making this stuff too realistic it takes away from the wonder, and fantasy of comics...and that was my main attraction to begin with!

Posted by: Ian on December 14, 2008 at 01:00:18

Off topic slightly .. but to add to Maul Rats comments - What came first. The scripting for Season 3 of Heroes or Mark Millar's "idea" for War Heroes .. both of them being a rip off of the whole Super Soldier Serum anyway .. ideas ?

Posted by: Ken on December 14, 2008 at 01:23:32

They're gonna incorporate the Green Behemoth into...ANYTHING, credibility will be challenged! People don't panic. People don't dress up as a Bat and fight criminals in Chicago. A man in blue tights doesn't defy gravity and aerodynamics and use weird scientifically challenged powers. Teenagers (as much as they'd like to) do not dress up like a patriotic spider and fight criminals that weren't their until he showed up. These are movies!!! We are able to suspend our collective imaginations and temporarily believe in the impossible (or improbable at best)! Now, when an independent Thor film is made, the themes (i.e. military in CAP, IM, and Hulk) can shift to accomodate the successive Avenger story. All it takes is imagination. Cooler heads will prevail. I guarantee that Favreau and Branaugh will compare notes.

Thor is going to be the odd-man out no matter what happens. This isn't about the Avengers now, though. I think a good Thor movie should take a lot of elements from The Incredible Hulk live action tv series in keeping a secret identity, in contrast however, in respect to his shame of having to hide his power. But before all of that could happen, Asgard has to come first. Curious as to how Branagh will portray the extra-dimensional world...

Posted by: Mayatiz on December 14, 2008 at 01:49:48

im so excited...Kenneth will pull this off...i doubt that Marvel will let this slip out their hands. they're doing the "don't fit in" line to reality to confuse the readers to make false speculations. come to think of it...it's a good plan! they're going to approach it like the comics...only more human emotions than the visuals.

Thor will be great!

Well from what I've seen, Iron Man, TIH, and Nick Fury are based on their Ultimates versions . So why not base Thor on his Ultimate version?

Posted by: Jessey custer on December 14, 2008 at 02:08:40

Yes mb youre rightThey should make thor like the ultimate version of the character were you don't really know if he's a god or nut. Either way my pick for thor would be this swedish actor named Alexander skarsgard( I think that his name) He plays erick on true blood. He's suppused to be a 300 year old viking vampire on the show. Hed be absolutley perfect. also wasn't the guy who directed

I agree that Thor will be hard to place into a reality-based Avengers movie, but right now these movies aren't completely reality-based. The beauty of Iron-Man and Hulk is that you think there is a reality to it because they concentrated more on the characters than the story. Of course I wont deny the benefit of the doubt to those fans who think that the arc reactor or super soldier serum are just a few years away from being a scientific possibility. Just take note that these movies are so great because:
1. They leave a little to the imagination and don't try to explain every little fantastical detail. It's like a HALF naked woman; much more appealing when you want to know what's under there, but you get just enough to satisfy your dirty urges.
2. They have great actors to help place the focus on what these people feel like with these conditions thrust upon them and how they deal with it. How are WE going to relate to how someone feels about suddenly losing their ability to crawl up walls when we don't know the feeling in the first place!
3. The TOPPER for me: They are finally integrating universe of characters we have come to know and love! Like we think Spider-Man is the only superhero in NYC? The Fantastic Four are only supposed to fight Doom for their selective Hollywood careers? DAREDEVIL DOES ALL THAT FLIPPING IN LEATHER???!!!
I for one would applaud the inclusion of Thor in the Avengers movie because I think they know what they're doing now. They are trying to make our fantasies a reality without getting rid of the fantasy.

@ Ken & mb,
You two makle a good point, we as the audience should be able to suspend our disbelief for a moment...but since some of us are not capable of this then have it be vague.... but, let the other characters ( Iron Man, Capt. America etc..) decide for themselves if this other character that claims to be Thor is truly a god or some whacked out individual, as opposed to us...the audience. To model Thor after the Ultimate version is sort of a cop out to me...it would be too easy. Who ever is writting the screneplay should look at this as a challenge, and use their imagination...this can be pulled off, and be believable to the audience...if you have the imagination.

So far... I believe in Kenneth Branagh.

Thor in an Avengers movie can work cause the science that Asgard can be built on is in theory creditable by most physicist. Asgard is a pocket universe within the marvel universe. Fact there is a crazy physicist right now trying to make a pocket a universe within our universe by recreating the big bang. Also fact when you deal with other universes the laws of physics that govern are universe isn't the same in another universe. Its like Superman with a red sun compared to a yellow sun.

All these guys running around saying Thor won't fit the "realistic" setting of Ironman and The Hulk are probably smoking something. A guy in a Metal suit flying around and lifting tons of weight; thats so real. A green giant with muscles bigger than the entire WWE put together; I see guys like that walking the streets everyday. These characters are based on comics damn you!!!!! Get a grip!!! Thor should fit in nicely with green man in purple pants who can destroys cities and the flying tin man who destroys tanks.

Posted by: ccr on December 14, 2008 at 04:23:41

thor HAS to be in the avengers; there is no part of iron man or incredible hulk or captain america that is based on reality, just plausibility, and open-mindedness is the only thing that makes superhero movies work ppl!! and alexander skarsgard is the frontrunner for thor, i hope he gets the part!

Posted by: jim on December 14, 2008 at 04:57:24

i just hope we won't see ultimate avengers.i think they should stick to the old thor, just make some minor changes to the costume and having it look more like an armor.it's true that they're gonna have trouble integrating the thor character with the rest of the avengers but it all depends on how kenneth brannah will choose to portray the thunder god.fingers crossed.

What is up with everybody and this "Reality Based" bull-crap, the comic has been around for forty plus years and now movies are being made it has to be "Reality Based"? Who came up with this frase anyway, the movies are base on COMIC BOOKS, COMIC BOOKS that are based in fantasy and imagination by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby who were late teens, early twenty's when they wrote and drew their stories. "Reality Based" is a phrase that should not be used in the same sentence when talking about COMIC BOOK characters, and Thor was a founding and original member of the Avengers, to leave him out or replace him would not do the movie justice, Lee and Kirby made it work, Favreau and Branagh can do the same or dont make the damn movie at all.
