Sherlock Holmes Villain Details
December 2, 2008
IGN UK got a chance to talk to British actor Mark Strong about the villain(s) in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Sherlock Holmes.
Strong said that Holmes' arch-nemesis Moriarty is in the film, "but you don't really see him. I think he's there because if the franchise carries on, there's a possibility that he will appear in a larger guise.
"But for the purposes of this one and the detective narrative, I'm the guy that Sherlock's after, Lord Blackwood. And he's a cultist/Satanist lord who is the ultimate cad."
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the thriller stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. It opens on November 20, 2009.

This sounds great to me. Guy is one of my fav directors and Downey is in my top 20 actors. the idea of Moriarty no being the villian in the first movie should work so long as the villian is a challange to Holmes-TDX

Mmm, I would rather have them do this rather than fail and have a moriarty that was depicted in a bad way.

I think this will leave plenty of room for them to build.

I hope this movie takes place in the past, it would be very interesting to see Guy Ritchie step out of his comfort zone and make a time period movie.

This movies going to suck. Every aspect of this movie from the creators and casting makes me sink more and more into depression about this film. I expect nothing from this movie.

How can you have a Sherlock Holmes movie without Moriart?

Awesome! Sounds like they are going to treat Moriarty the same way they should have treated the Kingpin in Daredevil. Heard about but not seen.

Basil Rathbone seemed to do alright without a moriarty on more than a few occasions.
Posted by: bombane on December 2, 2008 at 18:49:24
Yes exactly how can you have a Sherlock Holmes movie without Moriarty...
Especially considering that Moriarty never directly appeared in any of the Sherlock Holmes stories but was only spoken about!!!
People have the wrong view of Moriarty because of the way he was depicted on screen...that was done by Hollywood cos they hadn't the imagination to present Sherlock Holmes properly.
Sherlock Holmes is not about good guys vs bad guys, it's about a seriously f'ed up individual that happens to solve an odd crime. House, M.D. is an example of a modern day Holmes. Batman is based on Holmes

Uh, Moriarty appeared in two Sherlock Holmes stories! Sherlock and Moriarty even had a fight, and Sherlock knocked him over some cliffs. He's like the Blofield of Sherlock Holmes.

Even though Moriarty appeared only twice, He is mentioned in nearly every Sherlock Holmes story. Watson doesn't even meet Moriarty at all.

Another worrying bit of news from that project. Guy Ritchie having lost it - IMHO - wasn't enough, but they had to pick an american actor to play Holmes (what's next, a canadian to play Bond?^^). And now the obnoxious "we're not unveiling the baddie until the sequel" scam that reeks of arrogance... What if that bombs and there's no sequel? Just because RDJ comes from a hit (and let's be honest, he's been lucky - IM was totally average, nowhere near the great piece of filmmaking the fanboys were bragging about when it opened) doesn't mean there will be a guaranteed saga in the works. Better deliver the first time around and build some sound groundwork for the potential sequels rather than *another* dull origin story with no ambition other than buttering up the fans into waiting for the sequel...

Moriarty appeared indirectly in those two stories. This is when Holmes relates his interactions with Moriarty to Watson(the second time Moriarty died)...and considering watson is relating the story to the reader, we're kinda getting it third hand
After this Moriarty is only mentioned and he's already dead at this stage anyway.
Moriarty worked well in the stories because he was a shadow figure. you only heard of him. When he and Holmes finally met it was over and done with quick as you would expect of such characters.
Even Holmes is a shadow figure because we only hear of him from Watson. We never know what's going on in his head. That what makes him interesting. He's such a mystery

I'm glad Moriarty's in there somewhere. It wouldn't be Holmes without him.

Yeah in what was initially supposed to be Doyle's final Sherklock Holmes story Holmes pushes Moriarty off of a cliff, falling himself to his doom, but finally ending the rival. This is viewed my many as the actual ending to the franchise, with subsequent stories viewed as prequels.

anyway best interpretation of Sherlock Holmes was in that cartoon Sherlock Hound haha

Moriarty isn't mentioned in almost every story but the last few. There are a lot of Holmes short storty that make no mention of him. Having him in the back-ground is perfection fine.
Having Irene Adler in the story is just wrong. Holmes met her on ONE occasion where she slipped into obscurity and became only 'The Woman'. I'm re-readig the comiliation of Doyles Holmes work and am pretty sure she never re-appeared.
The casting for this is all wrong also. Two of the pictures I've seen of RD I thought one was Charlie Chaplin and the other he looked a lot like Huge Jackman.
Don't like the director either. When I read they are going to make this a 'totally different Holmes' I cringe. I seriously doubt I'll be going to see this. I might watch it when it comes out on DVD if I can rent it cheap.
Could be surprised though. RD is an amazing actor and I'm a big fan of his. But I'm a bigger fan of Doyles Holmes and would prefer them not screwing things up.
