Robert Downey Jr. Talks Avengers
November 25, 2008
MTV has an interesting interview with Robert Downey Jr. in which he talks about the fact that Marvel Studios will have to work hard on getting The Avengers movie right with so many characters involved. But this quote is the one that got us...
"The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that 'Iron Man' should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion."
Interesting, very interesting! The movie doesn't hit theaters until July 15, 2011.

The Ultimates comics proved it could be done correctly. As long as you treat all the characters with respect and you give all of them something to do.
If the only thing that your brains is allowed to write is First than you should just shut up. It clearly states that you are a retard or a 10 year old.

Doesn't sound like he is totally on board with the project or at least Favreau isn't.

Yes we all know about TDK, no need to spam the boards up with that.
But he def. hit the nail on the head. Iron Man relies on technology which is much easier to swallow than gamma radiation and super-serums but as long as they understand that and work together it should be ok. Basis on reality is whats making these new movies great. Thor..ehhh, I'd be more worried about that character than Hulk or Cap.

RDJ is right that it will be very challenging to make it all believable. Ironman, Cap, and Hulk are all rooted in a realistic way but Thor is on another level altogether. Maybe they should change Thor's origin for the movie? I know Thor fans arr crying foul but it may be the only way.

Thor was always the wild card to the Avengers and the Marvel world in general (add to him Dr. Strange). But someone like Favreau is exactly what Marvel needs in the directors chair because he will keep to the Marvel tenants of making "human" and real to life Superheros dealing with supersized problems. Avengers is going to be ground breaking...unless of course Marvel puts together a teamup of some kind prior. Hulk versus then turned "good" (like Doc Savage stated from the Ultimate Avengers) would be awesome onscreen. The worlds MUST and will work together if they stick with the Marvel way.

I don't think they should do the EXACT story from The Ultimates. Just the way they depicted Hulk to me was ridiculous.
I still say the main villain should be Red Skull. Set him up in cap's movie, he also should live. And this could start setting up The Masters of Evil, or make the main villain The Leader.

its super-heroes for crissakes . . . there's going to be some fantastical elements. No matter what RDJ says, flying armor with a ton of armament is NOT realistic . . . though we love it. Just relax.
Look at the Ultimates for inspiration and it WILL work. Get the right people (actors, directors, writers...) and it CAN be great.
Dear god lets hope so . . .

If the ending of Hulk was any indication, Stark could be used with SHIELD in trying to get a hold of Hulk, and during that time a much more dangerous foe could present itself and require that Hulk and SHIELD/Avengers join forces.

I'm so tired of this apologetic attitude we have regarding the comic book material being translated to the big screen.. it doesn't have to be so-called 'realistic' to be successful.

with all due respect to RDJ or his perceived comments.....
He cameoed in The Incredible Hulk, so he's not that down on the suggestion.

I think what I've always thought: a) the Hulk is a character that was never right for film, and b) the Avengers should be pushed back to 2015, when full Iron Man and Cap trilogies can be executed and other characters can have their films reach a wide audience. It's too much too soon..

Hulk and Captain America are within the realm of possibility pertaining to Ironman, but Thor would just seem too difficult to translate, but then again so was Ironman's infinite power source so we'll see.

@Ben-Hur: If they waited until 6 movies were out between IronMan & Cap who knows what would happen. Those could end in disaster and then the Avengers movie would flop. I do agree the Avengers movie seems to be rushed, and this is not a good thing.

I love marvel and what they are doing with the movie's right now, If this is done right it has the makings of being the 2nd biggest movie of all time cause as i dont think anything will ever out gross titanic.

-Everybody, we all know comic movies up-and-down nature. It seems either they're pretty good, or they suck. Now, I think kodiak33 is mistaken. RDJ and Favreau have this right, the movies need to rest in reality, i.e. what you and I and all the NON-COMIC NERDS can RELATE to. That's why this Hulk was so much better than the Ang Lee ver. We all remember the painfulness of those wacked dogs and the final battle where Hulk apparently sucks in or "sends out" (?) Hulkish radiation (??) to defeat his father.
This is what it comes down to - do you want SAVING PRIVATE RYAN & GLADIATOR quality/style Cap. Am. and Avengers movies... or AMERICAN NINJA/COMMANDO style/ quality Marvel movies.
No, MARVEL needs to get on board with RDJ and FAVREAU!
Posted by: eRok on November 25, 2008 at 15:25:46
Didn't Marvel mention something about an Ant-Man appearance? Ant-Man would be disastrous, but Henry Pym, who founded the Avengers, and also created Ultron, could create a formidable Avenger foe...

Thor is the only character that I have a hard time seeing. You might as well throw Mighty Mouse in as well. Im sure they will be able to pull it off as long as they find a serious actor and a respectable costume. I would not reveal so much until he gets his own movie. It would be great to leave him as much as mystery as possible. You just can't splash him onto the screen and expect people to agree. It kinda of worked for League of Extrordinary Gentleman. You have to work him into the story very slowly.

All they have to do is make it "look real" and everyone will be able suspend their "disbelief".
He's a great actor, but sometimes he really needs to shut up.

heh, face it, we ALL fear Thor will be the ace down fate's sleeve (and fate's not on OUR side on this one). Marvel is going to go all Speed Racer with Thor and it's going to be AWFUL. There's nothing we can do about it but hope Iron Man 2 and Captain America get squeezed in as two good movies before THE AVENGERS strikes with gut-wretchedness.

I definitely don't think RDJ's comments are against the project at all, just being very open about the challenges. I actually read an interview w/ Favereau (possibly on SHH) stating the same thing. Just explaining that they're going to have to do some serious work on the writing and directing to make the various characters mesh. If I recall correctly, he was actually on board w/ Iron Man, Capt. America and Hulk being able to blend at least semi-well - he did seem a bit worried about brining a Norse god into the works though.
I think it can be done, but I do see where he's coming from. I think that Iron Man and Incredible Hulk have each done an excellent job in establishing the characters in the real world, which will help a great deal. It is really now dependent upon how "The First Avenger" and "Thor" films fair with establishing their characters. If done right, it can work. If not, the film can end up alienating its viewers or spend too much time TRYING to make it work (Spidey 3 anyone??), rather than just making it work.

Tonally, these movies do not have to fit. Nor do the charactors. Thats where the fun lies. Seeing Downeys Stark interact with an ancient norse hero will be a hoot. Think of both the dramitic and comedic possibilites! And Cap is really not all that far fetched to begin with (The nazi's injected their soliders with steroids in order to create "super soldiers"). Remeber it's just a movie. As long as the pesudo Marvel science makes a little sence, people will bite. I say AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!
