Markus and McFeely Penning Captain America

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to write Marvel Studios' First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston and produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige.

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.

In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel's superteam, the Avengers.

Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in modern day-set The Avengers.

Markus and McFeely worked on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and its sequel, "Prince Caspian." The duo also wrote HBO's "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."

A WWII live action Cap movie...pinch me. Great news.

WWII Cap movie. Please pick someone good for this role

Posted by: Spanish39 on November 18, 2008 at 21:35:59

I'm sure Buckey will be in the film, it's still too early for any of that. Hell, they don't even have a real script yet right? If they ever want a winter soldier film then they will have a Buckey. I like him now, better then I ever did Robin.

i am pumped for this movie and im so glad its gonna be WWII. if they would have done a modern day iraqi war captain america it would have been terrible.

Nice research SHH! Not many people realize Cap was published under Timely before the company ultimately became Marvel.

Keep us posted! It's good to see things are finally startig to roll for this.

Yeah MAC DRE Jr., look at how well Goyer did with Blade 3...
I'm getting more excited with every new piece of news about FA:CA they release. Sounds like Marvel is taking the time to make sure that they do it right! (As well they should!) Now we just need some casting info...

Posted by: Triad on November 18, 2008 at 21:55:39

I just hope that it simultaneously has the nostalgic heroic feel of "The Rocketeer" along with the gritty, brutal realism of "Saving Private Ryan". That would make me a very happy fanboy!

nothing I hate more than excessive capitalization.
lol Goyer and blade three lol

If cap were alive today and saw the mess of criminals in the white house, he'd string them ALL up.

Posted by: Darth Colossus on November 18, 2008 at 22:23:29

Keiffer Sutherland is Captain America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Peter on November 18, 2008 at 22:24:05

Brad Pitt should play Cap!

Posted by: sithlordintraining on November 18, 2008 at 22:25:49

Triad: Great point... I'd love to see a sort of "Rocketeer" meets "Saving Private Ryan" with a shield, of course!

Grafdog: Why on earth would you bring your political views into this? Did you get tired of writing a blog at the Daily Cos or something. This is a site for Superheroes and their movies, not for lame, ill-thought out political rantings of someone who obviously has the intelligence of the common field mouse. Go away. And by the way, you started with "If Cap were alive today..." somehow implying that he WAS actually alive. Welcome to reality check, 101. He never was alive. He's a fictional character. Now go away.

Seems to be good news, this is getting exciting!! Cap in WWII, that'll be buck wild and how it should be! I can't imagine what the Post-Avengers sequel be about though. The first film has a GREAT origins tale, like Thor.

Whilst I'm here, is there any new updates on the Thor film? Anyone?

Down goes grafdog! Down goes grafdog! And the winner, by exhibition of commons sense and extreme wit.... SITHLORDINTRAINING!! Well Done!

The only problem I have with the WWII setting is explaining the Red Skull in a believable way to the movie audience. While making the super soldier experiment seem plausible won't be hard, having our hero then end up facing a disfigured maniacal genius will be. Perhaps if Cap, in an early battle, accidently causes the disfigurement of the man who becomes the Skull, who witnesses in his suffering Cap rescue Bucky Barnes and gets revenge by trying to kill Barnes, etc etc, maybe? Still don't know, there's just so much there, trying to tell it right and to the fans satisfaction will be difficult. But I'll be there when it opens!

i think this movie is going to have to be pretty long to get everything in there right

Posted by: tian on November 18, 2008 at 22:49:04

yeah no mention of bucky what the hell

Posted by: Winston Wolf on November 18, 2008 at 22:52:20

Cool. Sounding better all the time. I was worried about how they would pull this one off. WWII setting eases my fears.

wow narnia?

...jesus it keeps getting worse and worse.

Posted by: Scortia on November 18, 2008 at 23:05:58

I won't go see it unless Aaron Echkardt plays Cap. He has THE CHIN.

Posted by: Ken on November 18, 2008 at 23:09:02

Strange choice. But we'll have to see, I guess. I think I'd rather have Millar and Gough, though. These guys did well with Chronicles, but I haven't seen any other work to measure their ability to be versatile in a different genre of work. Frankly, I'd like to see Saving Private Ryan style cinema for the WWII sequences.

I've yet to hear any proof that this will be WW2. I certainly hope so, but they could wimp out and go with a 'secret wars agent' back story that makes him the first avenger by just 5 or ten years. The only counter-evidence thus far is the Vita-Ray tank in The Incredible Hulk.

Triad's stylistic idea is great, but the Rocketeer, while idealistic, was overly camp, so I'm not sure that would work with a Band of Brothers/Saving Private Ryan vibe. That vibe, on the other hand would be too harsh for the kids, and there's no way Marvel will make CA 'R', and might not even opt for PG13. A bowdlerized Band of Brothers vibe with a bit more mud and less blood might work, though.

I certainly hope they can achieve the blend you mention. I also think we'll see a more 'Ultimates' looking uniform, with the 60's/70's version, if ever seen, being adopted at the very end. Even then, I suspect the Ultimates 3 uniform instead.

As for Bucky, I'm mixed on it. One, it's a great catch for more movies and great characterization, but it's a lot more plot-complicating. IF they use it, Captain America:White has a pretty audience-friendly version of events.

(That said, I really hope they use the new Thor look and NOT the Ultiamtes THor look.)
