Joe Johnston has signed on to direct Marvel Studios' First Avenger: Captain America, based on characters developed by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. The film will be produced by Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige. Executive Producers on the project are Louis D'Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios' Chairman David Maisel. Paramount Pictures will distribute First Avenger: Captain America worldwide. The film will come to theaters domestically on May 6, 2011.
Here's the official logline: In the early days of the Marvel Universe, Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Johnston is currently directing The Wolfman, which hits theaters on April 3. He is developing The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. Johnston previously directed October Sky, Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, The Rocketeer and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Johnston won an Academy Award® in 1982 for Best Visual Effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Marvel Studios most recently announced an agreement with Raleigh Studios to film each of its next four films at Raleigh’s facility in Manhattan Beach, CA which will include First Avenger: Captain America.

Well any chance of this being a good movie just went in the toilet.

Cool. I think I know where this is going. It's gonna be a WW2 film about Cap, then at the end he gets frozen in the ice. Then 2 months later Avengers movie with them unfreezing Cap.

woah
i think this movie is going torwards the right direction.
i like how the whole movie is set in WWII
it totally gives a complete explanation of steve rogers becoming captain america.
red skull appearance?

well...... hope it's better than Jurrassic Park 3

this is awesome news!! I love love love The Rocketeer and think it's vastly under-rated. excellent, fitting, and yet unexpected, choice. bravo Marvel!

Russell Crowe as Captain America!!!
Posted by: Edezart on November 10, 2008 at 00:39:16
Seriously, this may be the toughest one of the series to pull off.
We need to have a super-solid script!

If he does anywhere near as good as a job as he did on Rocketeer then Ill be happy. Just atleast better than JP3
Posted by: shroud on November 10, 2008 at 00:42:38
the JPIII and october sky part scares me. Mabey wolfman will be reasuring.
I'm still hoping they drop the "first avenger" from the title.

I'll be pissed if they don't show his shield ricochet maneuvers.
Posted by: kellen on November 10, 2008 at 00:45:01
I don't think that the directing on JP3 was that bad. I think it was a collective misstep that cannot be blamed soley on one person. That said...this better be better than JP3.

This movie should be THE "proud to be American" movie.
Did anyone else feel when chills Spidey landed on the American flag?

Wow, for a while I was getting this guy confused with the director of the Ghost Rider movie.

Just hearing that they're going to focus the movie on WWII cap has made my day. I was worried they might try and make him a Vietnam vet. Can't wait to hear who they cast.

Rocketeer is one of my favorite movie and with both it and Captain America sharing a bit of the WWII feel, I am optmistic that Joe Johnston can do Cap justice.
Good choice, IMHO.

You do realize that he only directed Jurassic Park 3.... he didn't write the terrible script.

I always expected Steven Spielberg to direct this movie, but Joe Johnston is an amaizing director, I love "October Sky", hope this was an excelent movie.

Please no. They should get James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Kate and Leapold) to direct Captain America.
We saw what this guy did to Jurrasic Park and what he may have done to the Wolf Man still is unknown. The Rocketer was good though but not great and Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Jumangi were not good.
so Johnson is not a good choice.

Joe better break out some major "money shots". We gotta see Cap open up the can. We need a full 15 minutes of him tearing through enemy lines, flipping, jumping, dashing, and slamming the opposition. This is Johnston's chance to really show how Cap takes people down!

Ehhh, this is alright. His movies range from good to pretty lame. But then again, did anyone expect a whole lot from Jon Favreau? But then again, again, his movies were pretty good haha. Nvm.

I hope they are drilling Russell Crowe for this part.
Has anyone seen Cinderella Man? This guy can make Cap be the next best thing to "Rocky"!
Posted by: Edezart on November 10, 2008 at 01:01:59
They must have approached Johnston for a reason. BUT! This is not the time in Marvels big movie universe scheme to screw it up!
He better rock the house!
Posted by: Edezart on November 10, 2008 at 01:04:01
This sucks! Now I'm gonna have to rent all Joe's stuff so I can nitpick it.
Except The Rocketeer. That is still awesome!
