Sam Mendes on Preacher
Source:Empire Online
November 7, 2008

Empire Online talked to director Sam Mendes, who said the announcement of him directing Preacher was a bit premature:

"This is a typical Variety announcement," Mendes added. "'Mendes to direct Preacher' – I wish! Basically they should have written, 'Mendes in development with Preacher'. What I'm doing is, I've gotta find a script. I've just got to get it written."

Mendess did talk about adapting the comics:

"It's brilliant, it's an incredible twisted vision," he said of the 66-issue story. "There's so much of it you couldn't possibly fit it all into one movie. It's just about what you keep and what you leave out, and how you structure the story. But just to have that toy set again, being able to paint on a big canvas and to say 'I am gonna do crazy crane shots and massive action sequences again because I want to,' it's exciting."

I wonder what kind of crazy action sequences he's talking about in Preacher...

Saint of Killers versus the Texas Highway Patrol, Jesse versus Jody, raw ****ing action seqeunces.

This could only be good with Mendes directing it ! I hope all will go well. *crossing fingers*

it needs to be a panel by panel word for word adaptation.

in a series format.

one issue-one hour.

Posted by: Richard on November 7, 2008 at 04:23:38

clint, i swear that was what was discussed with HBO. And I thought it would be the best thing ever.

Posted by: Uchiro on November 7, 2008 at 06:46:04

i seriously dont like it when he says, "What to keep and what to leave out"...

I reeeeeeeally hope he just goes along with the story and they make more than one movie. you cannot leave out one second of The Preacher story because it is all good. Garth Ennis should write his own script. Nuff Said

HBO series got scrapped because of what made Preacher so Great.

panel for panel shot for shot adaption shows no skill on a director imo

KEANU REEVES AS SAINT OF KILLERS

Keanu as Saint of Killers? There is only one man for the part - CLINT EASTWOOD!

KEANU REEVES AS SAINT OF KILLERS

No thank you! lol

I think it should be a mini series, b/c there's so much to it a movie wouldn't do it true justice. They should try to take it to Showtime.

Posted by: Frerezar on November 7, 2008 at 11:54:15

3 movies could do the trick, LOTR style. And please no keanu reeves as saint. Arley hermey (most likely misspelled) for saint of killers awwwww yeah. Or maybe David Carradein

Posted by: Ryan on November 7, 2008 at 14:06:15

I think they could leave the whole of American History out of the film.
Leave them stories for separate films later on.
They really should do the Saint of Killers story as a separate film.

Posted by: Lincoln Phil on November 7, 2008 at 14:45:40

I hope this film never gets made. There's no way they'll put everything that's in this comic on the big screen or the small screen. Film companies, distributors and advertisers are going to be way too scared of Bible Belt reaction to film this as it should be done. Jesus's descendents are **** flinging morons? An angel screwing a demon? God as a coward who abandons his position? Ain't gonna happen. It'll end up being the same insipid mockery that Constantine was to the Hellblazer comics. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this done as Garth Ennis wrote it - but I'd hate to see a watered down version that casual filmgoers think is a true reflection of an incredible book (although it would be good to see their faces when they read the comic after seeing the film lol).

ps. agree that David Carriadine would make an excellent Saint of Killers though.

i agree with lincoln phil. do you realize how much of the story you lose by taking that stuff out? it should be a direct adaptation in series form. i'm not looking for a director's imagination/vision, i'm looking for ennis' imagination/vision.

Posted by: Jeremy on November 7, 2008 at 22:53:27

The whole series was a train wreck. They just seemed to put a whole lot of totally immoral and disgusting things in there to see how far they could push things before readers said "Enough!". I read this for a bit towards the end, and was just appalled by the senseless violence and total disrespect for all things even remotely Christian. It would be interesting if they took the basic premise and changed everything else. After all, how much viewership could you really get for a show that would tick off so many people? Ticking people off for the simple purpose of ticking people off is bad business.

jeremy,

you obviously completely missed the entire point of the story. not to mention art in general.

Posted by: NoTsOsErIoUs on November 8, 2008 at 01:35:04

This is scary. Hope Mendes is up to the job.

Stellan Skarsgaard for the Saint of Killers!

Posted by: mrAmerica on November 8, 2008 at 09:41:58

Jeremy, you should disconnect your internet, turn off your tv and wrap your head in towells. That way you can never be offended by anything ever again.

preacher was awesome, had everything from horror, action, comedy, tragedy, betrayal, and more. I believe in God and actually think the underlining value of His' or Her's work in the comics about doing whats right and all that stuff. sorry for being all religous bout that just tryin to say yes it was offensive but that was the point( i feel anyway) and i get it
oh and sam elliot would make a good saint of killers (pls someone put him in a good comic book movie)

Posted by: copacetic on November 11, 2008 at 12:14:06

they won't be able to put Preacher on TV or movies because of all the stuff it depicts regarding religion. They protested freaking Dogma back in the, one can only imagine what will happen when they show what happens to God in this comic/movie.

Posted by: mojojackson on November 17, 2008 at 16:46:33

It absolutely kills me that HBO passed on making a 2-season Preacher maxi-series. I wish I knew why. The ireverence regarding religion cuoldn't be it, because they also did Carnivale. I just hope Sam Mandes (whom I really like) doesn't try to fit the entire story into a single film. Preacher needs to at least be a trilogy. It would be a fun film to cast, too. I'd go with Ben Foster as Cassidy (or maybe Jesse?) and Elizabeth Banks as Jesse's girlfriend, whose name escapes me at the moment. If not Foster as Jesse, maybe James Franco? Willam Dafoe would have to play the leader of the Grail, the guy who looks increasingly like a male body part that I can't type here because it'll just come up ****.
