ComingSoon.net talked to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who gave an update on Disney's upcoming adaptation of The Lone Ranger, in which Johnny Depp will play Tonto. Here's a clip on the George Clooney rumor:

In other Bruckheimer project news, it was confirmed at the Disney event that Johnny Depp would also play Tonto in Bruckheimer and Disney's new version of The Lone Ranger, but when Bruckheimer was asked about the rumors of George Clooney playing the title character, he denied that it was confirmed. "We haven't decided who is going to play the Lone Ranger yet. Get a director first and then figure it out.

thats nice to know. hope that it will be a decent movie

What is wrong with having a indian (native american) play tonto? It worked great in the comics, cartoons, and all the other movies, why change now? Johnny depp is a great actor but not right for this, change for change sake is just wrong.

Wait.....they can cast Tonto before they get a director but NOT the Lone Ranger?

ditto what civillian23 said.

Posted by: FuryusV on November 4, 2008 at 15:32:21

I wonder if they'll use the William Tell Overture as the theme?

Posted by: hypestyle on November 4, 2008 at 15:44:36

hmm... will Tonto be bi-racial this time, maybe try to make him more 'americanized'? just ignore the accent they stuck Jay Silverheels with, definitely..

otherwise, I'd pick Adam Beach..

Great news!

I think George Clooney should stick to roles that dont involve wearing masks. He already slaughtered Batman, why ruin another masked hero? I wonder if they are going to incorporate the William Tell overture into the movie?

Posted by: Civilian23 on November 4, 2008 at 16:19:15

Hey haljordan Johnny Depp Is part cherokee thats how they around him getting the part

The overture is a must. I hope this really tries to capture the feeling of the classic LR. After seeing Transformers last year I have learned not to get my hopes up when something I loved growing up is being reintroduced. Kind of why I'm not to fired up about Dragon Ball or the new Star Trek (although the latter is looking better than I first feared).

They want to put Depp in everything.
He's not who I see as Tonto but Depp usually brings something to the table that is always entertaining.
Hope the Bruckheimer machine can show a little restraint and make a good movie out of this- the masked man deserves one.

If it doesn't have the William Tell Overture somewhere in ther at full blast then there is almost no point to the film.

Now this is funny.

The Green Hornet is the (great?) grand nephew of the Lone Ranger. Look it up. Follow the Reids :)

Knack...Depp in everything is like Robert Downey, Jr. is going to be in everything. Remember when John Travolta had his career revitilized with Pulp Fiction and was in everything. Same stuff, different actor. I'm okay with Johnny being in a lot of stuff. He's my favorite actor.

I just want to say that whoever blames Clooney for the demise of Batman obviously never saw Batman Forever. The fault of Batman being destroyed was the directors. Do you think Keaton would have saved that movie from being neon art nova and the ****ty dialogue? Don't think so. Besides Batman sucked anyway, Tim Burton ruined it from the start trying to put his beetlejuice flare into a dark comic hero was a huge mistake and he camped Batman back out again in the HORRIBLE Batman Returns.

I would love to direct the Lone Ranger movie.

He is like one of my favroite characters and i can see a big action western.

Depp is a phenominal actor. I think he doesn't suit the roll as much but with make-up and clothing, maybe he'll fit.

As a person with native american blood in me.I am sick of native americans not being played by native americans.Movie studios can be so racist.Johnny Depp is a great actor but wrong the role.No disrespect to mr Depp intended.Adam Beach should get the role.

Posted by: lol...lmao...lmfao... on November 4, 2008 at 17:10:49

first..depp is agreat actor but i dont care if hes 99% percent cherokee...hes a white boy..plain and simple..they always do that..cast a white man for a role that was for a minority..it will never change...

Posted by: matt on November 4, 2008 at 17:22:44

Johnny Depp must have delivered an INCREDIBLE reading for the part of Tonto, because barring a stellar performance, I'm not sure I understand why they wouldn't cast a native american as tonto--there are several working indian actors who I can think of that are, to me, obvious choices as contender. Perhaps they all auditioned and Depp beat them out? Perhaps Depp wanted this movie so badly he earned the role by shear tenacity and persistence? I don't know. I hope he plays as authentic a native american as possible; of course, if the vision of the character in this film is different than the one we know, I'm sure Depp makes perfect sense to the folks in charge of production.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!
Depp as Tonto?!?!?!?!
Then my guess is Jet Lee is gonna the Lone Ranger...this people really enjoy throwing money on wierd movies.I don't normally make such plain straight foward comments, but this is gonna suck BIG TIME!

"Knack...Depp in everything is like Robert Downey, Jr. is going to be in everything. Remember when John Travolta had his career revitilized with Pulp Fiction and was in everything."

And we just got out of the Collin Farrell era, thank God---

No need for this movie to be made. Go rent 'Legend of the Lone Ranger'. It rocks!
