Sherlock Holmes Begins Production in London
Source:Warner Bros. Pictures
October 1, 2008

Principal photography is set to begin on location in London for the action adventure mystery Sherlock Holmes, being helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla), for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) brings the legendary detective to life as he has never been portrayed before. Jude Law stars as Holmes' trusted colleague, Watson, a doctor and war veteran who is a formidable ally for Sherlock Holmes. Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective. Mark Strong stars as their mysterious new adversary, Blackwood. Kelly Reilly will play Watson's love interest, Mary.

Based on an original story/comic book by Lionel Wigram, inspired by the classic tales of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the film will be produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin. Steve Clark-Hall and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.

In a dynamic new portrayal of Conan Doyle's famous characters, Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

"What we've done is hopefully launched a franchise of Sherlock Holmes stories," Silver said today in London.

Sherlock Holmes will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Miguel De Barioz...I'm glad you're not making the film...go see 'Fast & Furious'...

Why do I get the feeling this movie will only resemble Sherlock Holmes in-name-only? Sounds like it's going to be little more than an action movie in which the character just happens to be named Sherlock. I like Downey, but he's not Holmes material. And Guy Ritchie as director? Bleh!

I very much doubt this movie will be able to capture even just an ounce of the brilliance found in the UK series starring Jeremy Brett. :(

Matthew Vaughn Should be directing this

C'mon you guys hes not Batman or friggin Eviel Kenevel here....hes Sherlock Holmes, all he does is walk around and look for foot prints, still he is pretty iconic and pretty cool. This movie might be interesting to watch.

Sherlock Holmes will be good.

But why in London and not in New York City.

Robert Downey Jr is the man.

Holmes is much more than a dude who just "looks for footprints." He's a master boxer, swordsman, and martial artist. His fighting skills are formidable. Plus, Watson was a jungle and desert fighter for many years before returning to London.
And as for why London, have you read ANY of the books?
Hopefully they manage to catch the British charm and sophistication that made Holmes so wonderful, and don't devolve into some simpleton geared film to appeal to the MORONS in the crowd who just want to see Boobs and Bomb-blasts.

Should be real good, but it would be nice to see Sherlock kick some ass, admittedly.

So, Hollywood is going to turn Mr. Holmes into a superhero in the style of Indiana Jones. Let me see, Holmes is an intelectual with a passion for violin and a taste for heroin and cocaine and whatever he smokes in that huge pipe of his. And as for women, well he comes off as kind of a closet homosexual, so I guess Robert Downey Jr is perfect for this part, minus the intellect part. Can't Horrywood come up with something new and creative besides trying to revamp and reboot every old hack character.

Thanks Baker Street for injecting a little intelligence into the conversation. For all you knuckle draggers and mouth breathers who obviously don't really no much about Sherlock, stop judging and stop writing. It hurts my head.

I wish it was a Tumor. If you're not interested, move along. I'm sure your opinion would be appreciated elsewhere.

Sherlock Holmes should be a exciting and highly intellectual picture.Robert Downey Jr. is back with a vengeance and this is Guy Ritchie`s chance to show the public at large that he`s still a director to be respected and not just Madonna`s boy -toy/husband.

I still have trouble seeing the worm-like,smooth and almost bourgeoisie Jude Law playing the portly rough around the edges Watson(I still say Law would be better off as General Zod in a Superman reboot). But I believe that Ritchie and the studio can make this work.I also believe will we see a Holmes whose deductive skills and keen intellect match that of another famous dectective The Batman and that we will be shown a new side of Holmes that of the thinker and the fighter(it always makes for good cinema when the lead character is both).

I concur with Black Knight`s post,Robert Downey Jr. is the man!

to Black Knight...Sherlock Holmes is a british character...that's why it's in London. Everything about the stories is British.

and this should be a great movie. The cast and crew are quality so naturally i'll be dissapointed if this film is ****e.

This version of Sherlock Holmes is based on a comic book series?
Has anyone here ever read it?

Posted by: Stoat666 on October 1, 2008 at 20:46:26

Miguel De Barioz what sort of tool are you? Jude Law is dumb man, he;s got some dumb australian accent. Considering he is a POM, he has an english accent, not Australian, you retard. head back to the village now and stay there.

Here's hoping he runs into Vidoq. Anyway, I'll check the movie out, THEN review it.

Cool news all around. Didn't even know there was a comic. Time to hit up my local shop.

Hahahahaha-
Miguel De Barioz:
sorry no-one took the bait and actually believed you were real-
but a valiant effort to wind up the crowd with nonsense nonetheless. Much appreciated wind-up, fella. Good work and good satire on us.
As for the film itself- won't be as dramatic a departure into another genre as people fear, honest.

Posted by: Some Guy on October 1, 2008 at 22:04:12

Sorry-
one person fell for the bait.
Still...

This is gonna be dumb.

What an absolute awful idea.
Guy Richie - One trick pony, who's managed to hoodwink the public into thinking he's something more than Mr Maddonna.

Jude Law - Pretty Boy,who's managed to hoodwink the public into thinking he can act, he cant! (well he can,he plays Jude law perfectly in all the movies he's been in)

Holmes the Martial Artist - Well why dont we just get Jean Claude Van Dumm to play him.

Joel Silver - Where would you like me to begin. The guy has made lots of movies that Ive enjoyed,(and lots that have blown, and some that have blown and I've enjoyed)but,Sherlock Holmes and Roadhouse should never, ever cross paths! (Long live Dalton!!)

Robert Downey Jnr - Well actually that sounds quite good, and as you say, he's the man!
