McAdams Cozies Up to Sherlock Holmes

The Hollywood Reporter says Rachel McAdams will star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes, a reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character that Guy Ritchie is directing for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

McAdams plays Holmes' enigmatic love interest, Irene Adler, a character who appeared in Doyle's 1891 "A Scandal in Bohemia." While the character only appeared in that one story, McAdams' personage would return for any possible sequel.

The movie, which will begin shooting next month, takes its cue from a forthcoming comic book that producer Lionel Wigram wrote as a selling tool for a new take on the classic character. The concept sees Holmes as more adventurous and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations and mines more obscure character traits.

Downey will play Holmes while Mark Strong plays the main villain, Blackwood. Jude Law is portraying Holmes' colleague Watson.

McAdams is too young to play a love interest to Robert Downey Jr. It's the similar casting as Lois Lane for Superman returns, she may be a good actress but she can't act older.

The real problem with her is that she's not smart like Adler. Holmes hated women but he had a thing for her because she was the only one to trick him. I hope this movie's better than that piece of dump 'Red Eye'. I can't believe I paid to see that.
And why is Jude Law playing Watson? Watson has always been portrayed by big doughy guys with mustaches.

I like Rachel McAdams, but not for this role. She doesn't come across as shrewd, witty or intelligent enough to play Adler. No knock against McAdams, but someone like Cate Blanchett (even though I HATED her ridiculous hammy performance in Indy 4) would be a much better choice. She's beautiful, a little older and really has that shrewd look when she narrows her eyes.

And why is Jude Law playing Watson? I was hoping they'd get a Wilfred Brimley type. Maybe even Wilfred Brimley himself. I still think Russel Crowe would have been perfect. I can't see Jude Law throwing down if he has to. Plus like the above poster said, Watson is a bigger doughier (as opposed to a skinny little guy) with a big walrus mustache. Plus another knock on McAdams for this role is she's going to have to fake her British accent. Get a Brit or Ozzie like Blanchett and make it that much more authentic. I have no doubt RDJr. can pull it off, but you can't have 2 of the 3 main characters faking their accent. 1 of 3 is plenty.

Jude Law as Watson? He`d be far better of as General Zod in a Superman reboot.I don`t see a rail-thin aristocratic sounding actor like Law as Watson.RJ`s post is right on the money Watson needs to be a dumpier and rougher around the edges sidekick to the sharply intelligent Holmes.

One more thing,Rachel McAdams as the love interest to Robert Downey Jr.`s Sherlock Holmes? I think a actress with more depth and gravitas is needed for this type of role.Someone like Cate Blanchett would`ve been more appropriate it wouldn`t seem like more of a stretch to envision her as this powerfully independent and intelligent woman.

I agree with the two earlier posts, McAdams will be forced to act like she`s older, smarter and feign experience instead of actually being older, smarter and having experience as a older actress(I know it`s acting but believability in the role is what makes supsension of disbelief in everything that`s happening all the more easier).

1) Watson in the stories is barely 40. Holmes is anywhere from 30-45 except in "His Last Bow". Watson can be as dynamic as Holmes; don't let the screen portrayals confuse you.
2) Irene Adler was born in New Jersey.

@scotty
you can't have two leading men. even though watson had some experience that made him useful, he always stayed in awe of holmes. it makes casting a marshmallow to play him appropriate. also, not to split hairs, but adler does have to fake a british accent at one point in her interaction with holmes, so he won't know her identity.

Watson is not fat or doughy in the books. Thats something they just keep perpetuating in the film and tv adaptations. In fact he was a military man and in pretty good shape. It bothers me that everyone seems to think Watson is a fat idiot. He is actually very invaluable to holmes for his medical knowledge, marksmanship, and understanding of the female mind(something which left holmes baffled)

As a couple of others have said, Watson wasn't all that thick (physically or mentally) in the books. In fact, when you read the first one (Study in Scarlet) he's just back from war and is pretty thin. Law might be able to pull it off.

In the "Seven Percent Solution" Watson was played by Robert Duvall. Jeremy Brett played Watson on stage with Charlton Heston as his Holmes. A good actor with a good script can do most anything. The real question is whether Guy Ritchie is a good enough director to make this film worthwhile.

does anybody know when the hell this comic book is supposed to come out so i can see just how badly they pieced together and destroyed the canon?
