Mark Millar on the Kick-Ass Filming
September 9, 2008
Filming for the Matthew Vaughn-directed Kick-Ass has begun in London and the comic's writer, Mark Millar, has posted a report on his official site and photos of Nicolas Cage on the set have surfaced.
Written by Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., the Marvel Comics' Icon imprint book centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change when he eventually runs into real bad guys with real weapons. Lyndsy Fonseca plays the object of the teen's infatuation who believes Dave is gay. Cage is a former cop who wants to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter (Chloe Moretz) to be a lethal weapon.
Here is what Millar had to say:
Holy f*ck.
We are all going to...
a) Hell
b) Prison
c) Both.
But it's worth it, believe me. If I absolutely have to go to jail for a comic-book movie then I accept no substitutes. This is the one. I hereby declare Kick-Ass as the greatest movie of 2009.
And if you think that I WOULD so that as co-creator and a producer on the movie you're absolutely, one hundred percent correct. But as the months roll by and the trailers start to dribble online and you see what I just saw this weekend your heart will be beating that little bit faster too. I lucked out with Wanted and Timur and James and Angelina. But nothing-- I mean nothing-- can prepare you for Nic and Chloe as Big Daddy and Hit-Girl. As I said to Nic after the first scene was shot on Saturday morning, this is a movie about comic-book guys MADE by comic-book guys. We are absolutely in our comfort zone here and doing something really special. Cage's eyes just gleamed. He said it's the most excited he's been by a role in a long time.
And it shows. Screen-writer Jane Goldman and I were wearing out headsets and watching the monitor from early morning until we wrapped early evening both days, giggling at every line. Nobody knows this script better than me, Jane and director Matthew Vaughn, but we genuinely laughed at every take because these two actors just kept bringing something new to it. Coincidentally, the first scene shot on the movie was the first scene I wrote on the comic (now the opening to issue six) and it's Hit-Girl in her secret identity, wearing a Hello Kitty T-shirt and a kevlar vest as her Dad pumps round after round into her chest so she knows how a bullet feels. I loved the scene in the comic, I loved the scene in the screenplay, but Nic just took it to a whole new level with his delivery, the genuinely mental glee and beautiful comic timing as we see this little kid in pink clothes and a pink hat blasted back into mud in an abandoned factory. The scene in the swing park the following day is even better, but I don't want to spoil anything. All I'll say is that nobody is going to be prepared for this movie when it opens late Summer 09. Nobody is going to have seen anything like this before and that's very, very exciting.
You heard it here first: Chloe Moretz is going to be a superstar after this picture. There are so many great actors and characters running around here, but this kid is just spectacular. I hung out with she and her Mum and older brother all day yesterday and she's brilliantly unaffected by it all, switching from cute as a button eleven year old to potty-mouthed sociopath the moment Matthew yelled action. I have already nicknamed her Han Solo because she's going to be the one every kid wants to be when they see this thing as an illegal download.
More as it happens, but f*cking Hell. This is already about 350 times better than I could ever have expected. Everybody has a brief break from shooting this week before it all moves to Canada ten days down the line and then back here in a month. We're shooting on the Star Wars stage at Elstree, which I can only take as a good omen.

Don't really know what to think. The only person hyping this is the comic's creator and Nic Cage's movies have been terrible for a few years now. I'm waiting for a teaser.

Hey, if the creator is raving like a lunatic, it can only be a good sign. I don't know this title, but it sounds interesting. That opening scene sounds awesome.

Mark Millar is such an arrogant son of a *****, but hes so damn good, its hard to hate him for it :D
i wish theyd stop telling parts of the movie that havent happened in the comics, tho...

Dude! I didn't realise that this movie ALREADY started filming! That's Incredible! The Comic book series is only 4 freaking issues into it's story! I didn't even know that Big Daddy is ACTUALLY the girls father in the comic. The comic hasn't hinted towards that yet, but I guess it makes sence. Thanks for spoiling your
own Comic Mark! Nice Job Millar....
Anyway, I like the comic. It's brutal and Bloody as Hell. I'll be watching this just to see how they can push the limits of having children depicted in situations surrounded by Blood, Violence, Sexual Innuendo, and Cursing. LOL

Why is Nic Cage trying to look like Gary Oldman's Commish. Gordon....?
Cage is well past is best, go away.

Very true Scooby, I think that they should have at least let the comic run Through its first story arc before starting anything with this movie . I am highly interested in this flick but also I wish Mark Millar would Just finish his comics and ship them out on time I've been waiting for two months for Kick-Ass 4 to come out and I just got it 2 weeks ago. I was worth it though.and Jeff? never compare nick cage to gary oldman EVER. It borders on blasphemy

Hate Cage! He hasn't done anytihing good since Matchstick Men. And If I didn't hate the Ghost Rider character, I certainly did after that terrible movie

You know whats funny is that Mark Millar says "Blah Blah Blah, I'm gonna reveal Big Daddy and Hitgirls connection, Blah Blah Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler, I'm gonna reveal the opening scene to issue six even though issue 4 only just came out, Blah Blah Yadda Yadda Yadda, BUT I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL ANYTHING.
Yeah....Nice Going Mark. Nice Going...

I seen Bangkok Dangerous this weekend.
Is a good movie, five stars in my book.
Just right and patch perfect Nicolas Cage was Dark and Deep a very serious person.
He did a fine job on this Film.
Bangkok Dangerous, it reminds me of Denzel Washington in Man on Fire ( 2004 film )that was also a good movie too.
Ghost Rider 2, Will do just fine.
The same way as Kick-Ass.
LONG LIVE KICK-ASS!!!

Cage looks like Twitch from Sam & Twitch. Now why don't they make that comic book series into a movie? :)

I think Millar's idea of filming this movie is a good strategy, ´cause he selled to hollywood when 2nd issue was release and it wasn´t to much violent as 4th issue, wich came out a few weeks of start shooting.

KICK ASS HAS NO LIMITS!
Posted by: eric on September 9, 2008 at 17:04:53
This is odd. While Kick-Ass has been getting a good response, it is only up to issue four. I'm surprised it got the go ahead for a movie deal in what must have been a decision made prior to the release of the comic. I suppose the budget could be relatively low since there the action shouldn't involve "super" hero special effects. From Millar's discussion - and spoilers, bu++-head - the screenplay deviats from the flow of the comic. I wonder if the focus will be more on Big Daddy and Hit Girl than Kick-Ass himself.

i'm totally excited, but i agree with you guys that the spoilers dropping before the comics are even out, is getting very frustrating.

Cage should stay away from movies like these.

The "big deal american" director Millar is working with on the Superman trilogy is . . . Robert Zemekis

Movie is sounding good.
Cage, well he's been good in some of his films, and as a comic book fan, maybe he'll try to make this movie good. Though he didnt do Ghost Rider justice... but hey this movie still sounds Kick-Ass.
Mark Millar is such a lucky son of a *****.

Is this going to set some kind of precedent with new comic characters? Getting a movie deal before the comic series is even finished? We still don't have Dr Strange movie, nor a Green Lantern movie two characters that have been around for decades. But Kick Ass is already a movie? WTF?

Seems like Marvel is back to throwing **** a the wall and seeing what sticks. I rather have quality rather than Quantity.
