Columbia Pictures Goes for Maximum Ride
Source:Variety
August 8, 2008

Columbia Pictures has acquired screen rights to "Maximum Ride," the best-selling young adult novel series by James Patterson, says Variety. The studio has hired Don Payne (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) to write the script.

The protagonists are six children who have been genetically altered to be 98% human and 2% bird. The kids, who are bred to fly, escape a lab-rat existence and are then pursued by their scientist creators, who send a pack of part-human part-wolves called Erasers to hunt them down.

Seaside Entertainment's Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul will produce. Patterson will be executive producer.

After producing such Marvel fare as the "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" films as well as Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, Arad has hopes that Maximum Ride can hatch an original superhero franchise, with the elements of alienation and angst that resonate in those spandex-clad movie heroes.

This actually sounds pretty decent. James Patterson is an awesome writer, so hopefully the film makers will respect his work. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.

Before condeming something you don't know about, read the book. Or in this case, 4 books!!! Awesome story line for young and old alike. Can't wait to see it.

I've never heard of it. Gotta admit that the writer of FF4 part deux and 'My Super Ex-Girlfriend' being attached makes me want to ignore it completely. Some people say the books are good though, so I might pick those up. Need to read more about it.

I read the whole series and I have to say that it was pretty terrible. (why did I read it? I got it for free and I read a ton) The first was okay, but then they got progressively worse until that abomination of Final Warning. There is far more worthy material out there.

wooo..hell yeah...finally. I love those books.

Posted by: Space lion on August 8, 2008 at 11:33:54

these books are really good and i kinda have faith in avi in this fulm just because patterson wouldnt let him ruin his books

Part bird? Hmmm, so maybe that's why they put Beak in the Wolverine movie...Arad wanted to test audience reception for this crapfest.

I'm tonight's entertainment. I have just one question for you. Where. Is. Benji Molina?

Posted by: Spider-ham on August 9, 2008 at 00:50:13

Oh crap not another "XXXXX Begins", origin movie! BTW I never even knew they were making a movie about Birdman! I wonder if he'll still have that energy shield? BIIIIIIIIIIIIRDMAN!

After I read When The WInd Blows all I could think was how blatantly Patterson ripped off Dark angel.

It's a good series and one that I'll have no trouble convincing my wife to go see. Hell, she'll probably ask me about it as soon as she finds out. Read the books if you haven't read them. I'll admit that they aren't for everyone, but James Patterson rarely disappoints. I hope that the film adaptation stays true to the source material.
I can also understand how some people don't like Final Warning. It does seem like James Patterson is jumping on the eco-bandwagon there because that particular theme hadn't entered any of the previous three books. You do have to hook the people while they're young though. This planet won't last forever without doing something to change things.

Live with all of your might.

How if they are only 2% bird can they fly they would need to have more than that, hollow bones, tails, wings, different muscle types, etc. 2% would be like their feet. Oh well I wish I could fly though...
