Universal Pictures Loads 2 Guns

Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to graphic novel "2 Guns" from Boom! Studios, says The Hollywood Reporter. Marc Platt will produce the crime thriller via his Marc Platt Productions along with Boom! co-founders Andrew Cosby and Ross Richie. It's the third time the parties are teaming up.

"Guns," written by Steven Grant with art by Mat Santolouco, follows a DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer who are unwittingly investigating each other and who steal mob money for the good guys. They realize later that the mob actually got them to steal $50 million from the CIA.

The project is targeted to be a throwback to classic '80s buddy cop movies in the vein of "Lethal Weapon" and "48 HRS.," but with a modern spin.

Um since when is a buddy cop movie cosidered a throwback? As far as I can tell they never stopped making them. Its just that most don't do well at the box office.

yeah, lethal weapon flopped like nobody's business. That's why they made 4 of them.

whoa! I've never even heard of this comic book. Just proves to show you if there's a pretty good comic book series out there that a big film studio will buy the rights to turn it into a film. Maybe I should get my characters out there. I'm not gonna say or show who they are until I copyright them, but they're pretty good.

''2 Guns''? That sounds like a generic rap name for a generic rap artist. This is exactly what I thought would happen.Studios are witnessing the success of movies based on comic books and graphic novels and they`re scrambling to adapt anything that comes their way.Not out of any love or respect for superheroes or comic books and graphic novels but because of the money that such movies turn in.That`s why we end up with as some critics have dubbed them ''celluloid turds''. The action-comedy buddy cop formula was basically created by 48 HRs.(even though only one of the main characters was technically a cop) and ''Lethal Weapon'' stamped it`s imprint all over the territory. So every movie succeeding those classics have been following the same formula(and when I said classics I was`nt talking about Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 because let`s face it they weren`t really that good). One wisecracking loose cannon,pre-requsite minority cast member or members(or in the case of Rush Hour two differing minority cast members from starkly different cultural backgrounds thrown together for added comedic effect, add vicious adversarial rogue as the antagonist, plenty of violence and humour blended in with foul language ect.I`m a huge comic book fan and I love graphic novels but when it becomes obvious that that the major studios are scrambling to make graphic novels on second-string concepts just to cash in that`s when I abstain from going to the the movie theatre.

If it's as well-done a tribute to the buddy cop genre as Hot Fuzz then you can find me in the audience.

If it's as well-done a tribute to the romantic comedy genre as Saw IV then you can find me in the audience.

I read it. It's pretty good. Great art, good visual style, and it never really stops moving. Go out and buy the comic and support these guys at Boom!

I read through what they had on their website and it looks pretty interesting. It's very rare to find anything reasonably original in these movie genres so it should be interesting. Just as long as they don't cast Matthew McConnaughy as Trench. :)
