SDCC: Tidbits from the Marvel Panel
Source:Edward Douglas
July 25, 2008

Friday at Comic-Con International kicked off with a panel in one of the smaller halls that combined the different divisions of Marvel with Kevin Feige on board for Marvel Studios, Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and Dan Buckley for Marvel Publishing and Craig Kyle there for Marvel Animation. After a couple of slides of all of Marvel's upcoming projects and events (all which have been announced), they went right to questions from the audience. (Because this is a site about superhero movies, we will mainly focus on the questions fielded by Marvel Studios' President of Production Kevin Feige.

Kevin Feige said that they want to hire filmmakers and get the scripts in order before casting their upcoming high-profile movies despite there being a lot of rumors and speculation going on right now.

Feige also affirmed that The Incredible Hulk lived up to their expectations and the response from the audience was generally good, and he said that the Hulk will certainly return.

When asked whether Marvel Studios might ever get some of the other characters back in order to make their own movies, he said that there were very specific contractual obligations and he didn't think Sony or Fox would let go of Spider-Man or The X-Men anytime soon.

It certainly seems like Thor and Ant-Man will be the movies that Marvel Studios will be focusing on for the rest of the year from the way they were paired together in the slides and mentioned, but maybe that's just this writer's speculation. (Yeah, probably.) He wasn't able to comment on whether Jon Favreau is officially signed to Iron Man 2 (so basically, that holding pattern continues to hold.)

Dr. Doom won't be in the Avengers movie since he's part of the 20th Century Fox contract with Marvel, though he couldn't say whether he might be in future "Avengers" sequel. (Of course, this all depends on whether Marvel ever gets those characters back from Fox.)

As it's been reported, there's a script for a Silver Surfer movie, but Feige believes that Fox will wait and see how X-Men Origins: Wolverine does before committing.

Marvel has no plans to license out any other characters for movies that haven't already been licensed out. (That got a big round of applause.)

Yes! The Hulk will return!

Posted by: Rocky on July 25, 2008 at 14:01:16

For sure, can't wait the first one was way better then I ever thought it could be, and if it wasn't for The Dark Knight, Iron Man would have been the best movie this summer. It is a close second anyway :)

Posted by: Rocky on July 25, 2008 at 14:02:15

Um not sure why that happened but that ***** was Hulk! Is that a swear or something?

Posted by: kaiser117 on July 25, 2008 at 14:06:10

I am glad they are keeping the rest the characters in house, build up that universe!

"He wasn't able to comment on whether Jon Favreau is officially signed to Iron Man 2 (so basically, that holding pattern continues to hold.)"

Pardon? Didn't SHH recently post a news which said that Fraveau now IS singed to do the sequel?

So I suppose Iron Man 2 and Captain America will be the big ones they'll be working on 2009/2010 then.

Neato.

If Ang's Hulk was an admitted disapointment by Marvel, and The new Hulk made less, how can they be happy? It's all about profit, no matter how they spin it.

Why can't they be honest? It simply didn't make the money they expected. There won't be a sequel to a dissapointment. There was no sequel to Ang's Hulk, why would there be a sequel to the new Hulk?

Wow that's a lot of questions.

By the way. Iron Man still rules 2008!

Other than the Batman franchise at DC, everything else is in a hold, including Justice League and Man Of Steel...

The Dark Knight is hands down the best adaptation of comic-to-film yet...

The Hulk might return, but I doubt Ed Norton will return...

YYYYYYEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

He didn't say there would be a sequel to the new Hulk, he just said the Hulk would return. I assume he meant in an Avengers movie.

They're probably saying that even though Hulk made less money, the reaction to the movie was far better, which in turn will result in higher DVD sales.. So they probably feel very confident. I loved Hulk this time around. Wow. No Dark Knight, but no Marvel can really be.. Unless Spidey4 takes a twisted Carnage and let's him be crazy..

Strange how there was no mention of Captain America's status

Posted by: Travis McGee on July 25, 2008 at 14:21:21

I am really surprised to hear about Ant-Man, Edgar Wright (director) said he is doing another project before Ant-Man...

Marvel has released the dates for Iron Man 2 (April 30 2010), Thor (June 2010), Captain America (May 2011), and the Avengers (July 2011)...

I really want to see the Captain America scene that was deleted from the Incredible Hulk film. I heard that they are going to put it in the special features of the dvd release...

Everyone was all over Lee's movie for being a flop. The Incredible Hulk made less both domestic and worldwide.

Lee's Hulk $245 worldwide
TIH $227 worldwide

The numbers are closer domestic but TIH still made less domestic than 2003 Hulk. Why in the world would their be a sequel?

Posted by: adam wiliams on July 25, 2008 at 14:24:59

i wonder it coming out next year for the hulk.

Posted by: David on July 25, 2008 at 14:25:25

The Incredible Hulk was much better then that other Hulk movie. Happy to see Marvel is going to do another one. Hopefully they can work out a deal with Norton.

I just recently read on /film (slashfilm.com) that the guy from Torchwood was up for the part. They showed a picture of him and he has the build and the blue eyes, they just need to dye his hair blonde... But he can also act too! And his age should make him a great choice, since Steve Rodgers was a young man when he first joined the military for project rebirth...

Posted by: tony on July 25, 2008 at 14:26:01

Sad face.TIH was ment to get fan fav reviewes and establish the character and it did that. When the dvd comes out it will sell well so trust the hulk will have a better sequal and willhave a huge weekend boxoffice.

Posted by: Bean on July 25, 2008 at 14:27:35

Final domestic figures.
Hulk 2003 $132,177,234
Hulk 2008 $132,026,340

Worldwide figures
Hulk 2002 $245,360,480
Hulk 2008 $227,163,597

Batman Begins made $200 million domestic. Don't compare BB to either Hulk. Critical acclaim means means absolutely nothing. the only thing that determines a sequel is profit.

Posted by: Stonehenge on July 25, 2008 at 14:28:29

I don't see why everyone's so worried about Hulk's numbers in the theaters. I can give you one example of why box office doesn't really matter: Austin Powers. To be technical, Austin Powers flopped in theaters but it was the DVD sales that gave life to the franchise. Marvel has already made money on TIH from box office alone (it may not be much but tie that in with the positive response it received) and then add in the DVD sales when it comes out. I'm just happy that it's going to happen! I can't wait to see the Leader testing the Hulk!

Posted by: Bean on July 25, 2008 at 14:31:13

Why do you people assume the DVD will do well? If no one cared about it in the theater, what will change for DVD.

I respect your liking of the film, but, It is a huge financial disapointment, and there is no reason to think DVD sales will be any better than the theatrical release.

2011 should be VERY interesting. Captain America in May....Avengers in July. And the sequel to The Dark Knight will most likely be released in July as well.

Should be a great summer for comic books.
