Aronofsky and Self Confirmed for RoboCop
Source:MGM
July 24, 2008

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its "RoboCop" franchise. Aronofsky, the director of The Fountain, and Self, the writer of Road to Perdition, make a formidable creative team, fast tracking the RoboCop motion picture and spotlighting it as one of the most anticipated new films for 2010.

The announcement was made today by Mary Parent, Chairman, Worldwide Motion Picture Group, MGM.

In making the announcement Parent said: "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce "RoboCop." Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.

Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."

The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The film's storyline focused on the future of law enforcement as a terminally wounded cop returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

i live where the mill scenes from the original was shot. i saw all the crews and a couple loud bangs. i first heard remake and thought how stupid. maybe a fresh telling of a new story will be ok.

the worst idea i ever heard was rob zombie remaking the original conan movie!!! you can't top that movie in a remake!! that would be like remaking the original terminator!! no fing way.

Robocop was one of those films that just worked well- visceral with a heap of action and a great, sympathetic lead and just a flat out, cool concept. What really tips it into classic status is the satire laced throughout. Aronofsky could make a could sequel to it, but a remake is non needed, particularly when the concept lends itself to upgrades of the Robocop. get a new cast and get Weller back as the first Robocop if you have to. But I don't know what the hell kind of genius director you'd have to be to make a better film than the original.

I wonder if this new Robocop is going to come with Bluetooth technology and Windows Vista... think he'll be able to use Wi-Fi?

Paul Verhoeven > Darren Aronofsky

I love Aronofsky. Requiem was good, if you like tragedy and despair. The Fountain was very visually driven. But it also had a lot of philosophical undertones hidden in it. Pi was phenomenal of course being his first major movie. But over all of that it was the cinematography in his movies that blew me away. He had the same guy do all of his movies. I don't remember his name. But why would Aronofsky ever want to do Robocop? He had better not be turning mainstream.

One thing im curious about, is what hell look like. will they change him? or stick to the original look.

I would like to see Weller back to cap off his run as this character. An idea I had involved the Robocop program being restarted in the future(apparently an idea they may be using)by an evil company using cloned bodies to create an army of Robocops. This might make it possible for Murphy to have his mind downloaded into a new body and be human again. Robocop and Murphy on screen together would be kind of cool I think.

will it be a sequel? sounds like it, Why the hell do a remake? the first is still awesome and Im sorry to say but its going to be crap.

Sorry 2 interrupt Wyngarde, but Robocop IS Frank Miller's character. It was originally an EXTREMELY violent comic book 1st(even compared 2 the 1st movie).

YES!

As long as they don't cast Christian Bale! There's only so much fake growling I can take. And before all the TDK freaks start up let me just make it clear that I liked TDK and I am a fan of Christian Bale, I just think his voice in BB and TDK is a little over the top and ridiculous.

Why on earth would they want to remake robocop? The original has always been a superb classic?!!

Posted by: stylo on July 26, 2008 at 12:16:58

I love Robocop...but with all these remakes and updates, I'm starting to think Hollywood is out of ideas...

If they do it as a cop story - set in the future and the cop is part robo, of course - it could work that way. Allude to the original via flashbacks. Peter Weller won't be back, obviously, but diiferent actors have played the part before. I think it sounds like a good new boot-up for the franchise.

RoboCop+SamWorthington=HIT/Big Bucks

Posted by: Damon on July 27, 2008 at 17:26:44

The first film is a masterpiece. It's not even about RoboCop. It's about the world he lives in. It's about atmosphere. Something all the action-flicks of today always miss.

Robocop does not need to be remade. The original is a classic and should be left alone. This will only work as a 4th installment to the franchise. I am so sick of Hollywood remaking good movies and then ruining them. Is there no originality left? Have they run out of ideas for new movies? Or are they just too damn lazy and just looking for the easy buck?

ANYTHING by Anofsky is gold. Bank of this director, regardless of the property!
Gonna be good stuff.

i would love to see the wrestler be made into a feature film with a very muscular man in the title role.

Posted by: BrotherCavil on August 14, 2008 at 02:20:53

Well it would be interesting to see how they might re-imagine robocop's new look. Has anyone done any conceptual art for a more updated Robocop? That would be awesome to see!
