Aronofsky and Self Confirmed for RoboCop

July 24, 2008

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its "RoboCop" franchise. Aronofsky, the director of The Fountain, and Self, the writer of Road to Perdition, make a formidable creative team, fast tracking the RoboCop motion picture and spotlighting it as one of the most anticipated new films for 2010.

The announcement was made today by Mary Parent, Chairman, Worldwide Motion Picture Group, MGM.

In making the announcement Parent said: "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce "RoboCop." Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.

Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."

The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The film's storyline focused on the future of law enforcement as a terminally wounded cop returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

y are movies and tv shows from the 80s and early 90s coming out with sequals and movies outta nowhere. The only sequel from an old movie i liked was live free or die hard. Rambo was ok, could of done alot more for its self, rocky was just bad, Speed racer looked stupid, and i know im mentaly blocking out others. I guess i shouldn't judge yet, but now it's like whats next, Judge Dredd 2? a sealab 2020 movie?

One of The most anticipated movies of 2010? Really? More so than IronMan 2 or Thor or the final Harry Potter movie or pretty much anything at all coming out that year? come on Hollywood, use some imagination & come up with something original!!

Hopefully, this new RoboCop will actually have the ability to run, be fast, and be more agile. Wonder if they'll stick with the classic head turns, followed by the body, which needs just a little more time to catch up with the rest of him. Or how about the loud thumping sound criminals would get as he got near? I have to admit, I loved it back then, but as for today, there's much improvement that could be done! Just think of the potential this movie could have with the technology there is today and an updated storyline (although the original wasn't bad). Could be very awesome.

RoboCop is the first NC-17 movie i ever seen. I hope they make this one R-rated and don't go the "Live Free or Die Hard" route and go PG-13.

On AICN, word has it that the story will be set in the future, years after the termination of the RoboCop project....

I still don't knwo what to think about all this. The first one is one major piece that doesn't need any kind of reboot. I herad sevral years ago that Verhoeven wanted to make a "RoboCop 0.2" that is set right after the forst one.... Why not bringing the flying dutchman back?

Thank god it's a sequel and not a remake! You can't touch the original, and you can't replace Peter Weller - they already tried! BUT, I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt, and hope it's good.

"Dear or alive, you're coming with me."

So long as the story is right go for it, would cool to see Peter Weller reprise RoboCop. But they will cast some one younger no less than 35-38.

aronofsky is the daddy. i think hes up there with kubric

jrobert is right, the original premise is stuck in its time. as much as they've tried to imitate their hero reagan, the current administration hasn't been able to turn urban centers back into the 5h!tholes they were when the first movie came out. it's like how the original scarface was about prhibition, and the depalma one was about the drug war. you couldn't make it today, even with drugs in the us, because it's not at a boiling point. if they make a sequel it will have to suit today's mood, and i'm not sure there's a point i trying to make a cyborg movie that does that.

RoboCop will not work without Verhoven directing. His vision is what made the movie a good flick. Same goes for Total Recall.

Posted by: James on July 25, 2008 at 10:16:00

JohnV...Did you just say Total Recall was a good flick? Schwarzenegger popping out of a robotic woman? 3 titted women? Thats good vision?!?!?! RoboCop was crap and total recall was a nightmare...

Are there ANY original ideas out there? Anywhere? Aronofsky's "The Fountain" was an incoherent, dull mess. If this is a "next installment" it might be worth a shot, but NO reboot please!

Posted by: Ken of FLIC(K) on July 25, 2008 at 12:08:05

Ugh..this just seems really silly. The original, while hokey, is a fun classic. Plus...how can you top Red Forman as the foul-mouthed, vicious villain Clarence!?

I hate to get on the whole "nothing is original anymore", old, curmudgeon sounding argument...it fits here. 1987's version still holds up...leave it alone and try something new.

Posted by: Pete on July 25, 2008 at 12:09:08

Wait- is this a reboot, or a sequel?

Posted by: what the hell? on July 25, 2008 at 12:36:39

"I'm sorry the originals weren't great to begin with. I wish these people would focus on something fresh instead of dead decaying old franchises. "

Dead decaying old franchises. Yes. Love it! What's with that trend?

Ain't It Cool News confirmed that it would be a sequel set about 20 years after the Robocop program has been terminated.

Aronofsky is brilliant and this movie will be leaps and bounds better than the second and third installments, at the very least.

My lack of faith in Hollywood is only outweighed by my faith in Aronofsky. I really don't know what to expect here o_o.

Posted by: Ralphie on July 25, 2008 at 13:28:41

so....any original ideas from Hollywood today?

Posted by: JohnV on July 25, 2008 at 14:06:16

James,

I believe it was the success of "Total Recall" that made Schwartzenneger a big enough star to be the headliner for "Terminator 2".

"Total Recall", "RoboCop" and "Starship Troopers" all have Verhoven's unique dark and cynical perspective...That's what makes them stand-out films.

I am worried that Aronofsky is going to try to make an art film out of RoboCop. RoboCop is a "Rated R" for Extreme Violence" type of movie character.

Please don't turn RoboCop into a family film!
