Aronofsky and Self Confirmed for RoboCop
Source:MGM
July 24, 2008
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its "RoboCop" franchise. Aronofsky, the director of The Fountain, and Self, the writer of Road to Perdition, make a formidable creative team, fast tracking the RoboCop motion picture and spotlighting it as one of the most anticipated new films for 2010.
The announcement was made today by Mary Parent, Chairman, Worldwide Motion Picture Group, MGM.
In making the announcement Parent said: "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."
Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce "RoboCop." Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.
Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."
Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."
The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The film's storyline focused on the future of law enforcement as a terminally wounded cop returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

RObocop had one decent movie. The rest were terrible.

CAN'T WAIT!! Better not ruin it like the new batman franchise! Even though it was flushed by Schumacher years ago.

The original Robocop is not yet outmoded. This story is not ready for a reboot or retelling. If anything should be done, it should be a continuation, updating his exterior armor with something more streamlined.

Oh yeah, and Frank Millers Robocop 3 is proof that he shouldn't have a career. What a hack.

I hope they don't try rebooting the story or remaking it. Just give us a new angle and new mcguffin for Robocop. we dont need a new origin story. And I also wonder if this is so they can go ahead with a Robocop vs. Terminator film.

Robo Cop came out in 1987 and I remeber when we rented the movie when I was 12 in 1994 and about 12 minutes into the movie we had to turn it off(I was a christian up until I was in my late teens). That`s the real Robo Cop the Pg-13 version with the cybernetic ninja flipping around was a travesty.Robo Cop came out in a time of Reagonomics and when crack hit the United States harder than ever before. Some of the worst neighborhoods in the United States were turned into war-zones as a result.Robo Cop came out entrenched in the greed and decadence of the 1980`s, it`s dark and unbelievably violent even by today`s standards(I did see the movie later on)and I don`t know how a movie like Robo Cop could exist in today`s politcally friendly enviroment.Robo Cop and Robo Cop 2 are films that are uncompromising in their portrayal of a dark, sterile and graphic possible future where law enforcement is controlled by big business(OCP). Trying to ressurect that type of spirit now would be a mistake. It`s not a timeless story,it`s a very dated story and therein lies part of the original Robo Cop`s appeal.

Is this a remake or a sequel? I hope it's a sequel and if it is he should get an upgrade. It should also focus on the characters like the new Batman movies are.

just rerelease the original. Sometimes there ain't nothing playing at the movies I want to go see. Why not replay old good movies. I'd pay $20 to see T2, Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction etc on the big screen again.

Before all the movie revamps of the last few years, I've so been hoping that there'd be be more RoboCop films. If it's done well, this would be so awesome!

Agreed J-Dub, especially if they drop all of the "comedic" touches. That crap wasn't funny even when the movies were released. AND NO MORE STOP-MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY!!!! That crap only work on Robot Chicken!!

Wait, now we can't use that word wich indicates primary order? Thanks alot, you Jackhammers!
As for Robocop: I'll play along for now... They should get that guy Dough Jones.Just one thing:
Don't overuse CG.

Sheese! That 1st movie was so tight. I loved how they teased the audience by showing only little glimpses of Robocop at first. The comedy was great. I liked the line, "...or there will be...trouble" Froman's dad kicked ass. The secretary who's name plate he puts his gum on was played by his wife. I heard that the scene where a thug gets toxic wasted was a tribute to a movie I never saw, but remember well, "The Incredible Melting Man".

Jrobert
and I quote: Robo Cop came out in a time of Reagonomics and when crack hit the United States harder than ever before.
2 words bro, Crystal Meth. Nuff said.
Here's to hoping they make a down and dirty violent gorefest out of Robocop. The first one was great at the time... now its just a sad cheeze fest like most movies of the era. Just please oh please don't throw someone like oh ... Mark whalburg in the suit... I can smell it from a mile away...I'd buy that for a dollar!!!!!!! Too funny!

I like the short film where somebody took footage of Yoda and Jar Jar and matched it up with Abbot and Costello's famous routine, "Who's on First".

Bring back Peter Weller as Robocop...
