Peter Berg Takes on Hercules!
July 22, 2008
Hancock director Peter Berg is spearheading a fresh take on Hercules for Universal, reports Variety.
Berg will produce and will develop to direct Hercules: The Thracian Wars, a co-production of Spyglass Entertainment, Berg's Film 44 and Radical Pictures. Spyglass and Universal will co-finance the film.
Ryan Condal will write the script, based on a five-issue comicbook series by Steve Moore that debuted in May through Radical Publishing.
Spyglass' Jonathan Glickman, Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber will produce with Berg and his Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, with Barry Levine producing for Radical. Jesse Berger will executive produce.
"What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who's more man than god, with conflicts and redemption," Levine said.

M-O-O-N. That spells "meh".
Actually the core idea of this is interesting, but truth is that, sadly enough, Peter Berg just isn't a very good director, which he has more than proven by now. There is not a single on of his films that I've walked out of where I didn't think "this could have been a really good film/better film if someone else had directed it.
I mean I like Berg, but he really is a mediocre director.
M-O-O-N. That spells go back to acting.

I would much rather see the Marvel comics property Hercules come to the big screen.

Then, of course, you could have your Thor tie-in.

why they keep on doing mythology movies basing on a lame comic book instead of get on reading GOOD books about the subject? like 300, good movie, but wouldn´t be much more interesting to base it on Gates of Fire or some history books instead a comic book?

Oh boy, because nothing says 'epic' like Hancock, unless you're some 13 year old who's impressed by shawty CG and familiar names. I can already feel the breeze from how tremendously this film is going to blow.

I'm probably one of the biggest Hercules and Greek mythology fans ever but I must say I'm not too enthused by this post. Peter Berg's a C++ director at best who I have no confidence in to do this movie. I hope the movie isn't the disappointment Hancock was.

no one really cares about any of your opinions. berg is an entertaining director: the rundown, the kingdom, hancock...he makes some money, not oscars. all of you commenting about how much youre "enthusiasts" of hercules and greek mythology wouldnt know good taste anyways...you still think stargate atlantis is the shizz...and you probably stood in line dressed as a storm trooper waiting an entire day to see the crap that was episode 3...
on a lighter note, anyone ever notice how poor the spelling skills are of the people who post on these things? says a lot...

Heres a really childish idea. Ask Ridely Scott who directed Gladiator who would make a great director for a Hercules film? Then base the film off the WRITTEN LEGEND rather than a comic and make it tragic. By the way, there was a Hercules Mini series that came out two or three years ago with that Lelee chick with the difficult sounding last name. Although the special effects were difficult to watch at times, they were the most on point as far as the correct version of how Herculaes could go. And NO KEVIN SORBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Peter Berg also directed the movie "The Kingdom", with Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Gardner, and Jason Bateman.

I see absolutely nothing interesting about this movie. I love Greek Mythology just as much as the next guy, but this is just absurd. They're not making an epic based on the son of Zeus - they're making a movie based on an ambiguous comic book that only came out last THIS year, based on the Greek myth. I almost ALMOST would have prefered the Marvel version, but that's a stretch.

Umm, trends taper off when they stop making money. Anyone see that happening any time soon? I mean technically as a genre comics have the best batting avg.

I agree that if they're setting out to produce a film based on Greek mythology, stick to the F'n mythology. Not some new-fangled comic jibberish. If they plan on making movies only somewhat based on the mythology, it doesn't do sufficient justice. I mean come on, if you want to make a motion picture on something that just takes place in that time period then here's my opinion...
A God of War movie needs to happen. It's got a cool storyline and anyone who has played it probably also thinks that Kratos is THE definition of the, "badass" antihero. Not the overdone Hercules stuff.

hercules is not an anti hero
and those of you who say that youre fans of the original mythos should know that
1) hercules was an absent minded bisexual rapist who only knew how to fight and that is it
2) to do a true to original source material film it would have to be about 4 hours long and feature the hero of our story killing his own wife bumming little little boys and getting drunk and raping peasent girls as well as members of his own (mortal) family
it sounds interesting but i for one cant see people sitting down to watch it and it'll be boring and monotone.
i for one although i am a mythology teacher would rather watch a 1 hour 30 action film with magic and muscles and no need to think.

Actually, Niandithol, the period in which Hercules supposedly lived was not known for the bisexuality that became common several hundred years later (which is when the original myths appeared). Thus, the later writers MAY have portrayed him as such because it fit with their "modern" society.

So in this adaptation does he actually get drunk and kill his wife and kids? They always seem to leave that out when they do any Hercules stuff.

i have bad feeling about this..
whats with hollywood these days?
Posted by: The Brick on July 23, 2008 at 12:37:00
If it's done like 300 and they use someone who really looks like they could be the prince of power(a brick)then cool.

Hercules is a great mythological and I hope they do a good job. Hancock wasn't a great movie though, just entertaining enough for one night. I hope he gets Hercules right. It would be nice for Kevin Sorbo to have some sort of a special role in it as well, maybe as one of the gods. He really made the character popular with his deep and insightful portrayal of Hercules.
Posted by: Wolfy on July 23, 2008 at 13:06:21
*Correction*Hercules is a great mythological hero.
