The Black Panther Sneak Peek at Comic-Con

BET Networks and Marvel Animation have announced they will unveil "The Black Panther" at the San Diego Comic-Con next week. The series premieres in the first quarter of 2009.

BET Networks and Marvel Animation are teaming up to produce an animated series based on the legendary superhero, THE BLACK PANTHER. Casting is already underway for the series that is slated to premiere in the first quarter of 2009. A special sneak preview will premiere at Comic-Con in July during BET's panel on Saturday, July 26. The series will be adapted directly from the first six issues of the Marvel Comic written by Reginald Hudlin (issues #1 - #6 "Who Is The Black Panther").

The partnership between Marvel Animation and BET Networks marks an important milestone in the expansion of the channel's animation division and the realization of a project that has been a labor of love for BET's President, Entertainment, Reginald Hudlin.

"As a lifelong comic book reader, I didn't think anything could top the excitement of writing one of my favorite characters, the Black Panther. I'm so proud I've been able to maintain a successful run of the series over the past three years while keeping my 'day job' of programming a network. But now to have both of my worlds collide, to have a faithful adaptation of my own work as a prime time series on the network -- it's a dream come true. The Black Panther has always been an inspirational character to me, and now I get to share that inspiration with the widest audience he's ever had.

"I'm very excited to be working with Marvel. It's been great working with Joe Quesada and Axel Alonso on the publishing side, and I look forward to a similar experience with Eric Rollman and his team at Marvel Animation.

"I want to give special thanks to Denys Cowan, my SVP of Animation, who is doing a fantastic job of bringing the art of John Romita Jr. to life," says Hudlin.

Eric Rollman, President of Marvel Animation adds, "The Black Panther is a working example of Marvel's initiative to broaden our fan base by working with new and innovative partners. Reggie and his team can uniquely take material that is near and dear to them and re-imagine it for a whole new audience. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with BET."

The Black Panther animated series is executive produced by Reginald Hudlin, President, Entertainment and Denys Cowan, SVP Animation for BET Networks. Eric Rollman, President of Marvel Animation, and Cort Lane, Director of Animation Development, are the executives on the series for Marvel.

BET - Black Exploitation Television...why do we have to reduce a great character down to a matter of race?

Posted by: Sergio on July 15, 2008 at 13:24:28

I Meant that i hate the black panther he is such a rip off of Batman

Posted by: Whitey on July 15, 2008 at 13:24:33

sounds lame

I'm intrigued at the idea that we'll see the animation based on JRJR's artwork- that'll be brilliant!

I haven't read his comic but do look forward to the show.

I am excited, I would hope that we could show the same respect to each that the superheroes that we read about have towards each other and people. I am happy for BET and Marvel Studios, I hope this project is good for both companies.

Bomber...

Where does the article hit that the Black Panther is being reduced to race??? And the presence of BET neither picks your pocket nor breaks your leg... get over it. I have to say... it is such an outrageous idea that someone marketing to a black audience (the wrtiter of the damn comic book himself for goodness sake) would want to produce a program with a superhero (that HE WRITES FOR) that actually resembles said audience. Good on them... Have at it, then get Luke Cage some air time.

I'm a huge Black Panther fan...even have him on my watch. I like the nobility of the character. In my opinion Panther is nothing like Batman. Batman is all about revenge...Black Panther is all about duty and honor. Batman has no powers except his belt. Panther has powers granted to him by an ancient herb that include strength, speed, and enhanced senses.

GO BLACK PANTHER!!! :D

Great for bet and marvel! There is enough room for all our heroes!!! Give bat man a rest!

Panther would probably kick Batman's ass.

I think this great news. I've been hoping they would give him his own show since I saw the Black Panther is The Ultimate Avengers 2. He's a great character and can produce really good stories.

I agree with John Taber...how can you compare The Black Panther to Batman? Does every superhero now a days have to be compared to Batman?

Posted by: kirbyfan on July 15, 2008 at 13:49:07

Oh Yeah, this is what I'm talking about! One of Jack Kirby's best characters gets his own show!

There's so many things I like about this. Reginald Hudlins story is awesome, John Romitas artwork is always nothing but excellent, and of course this will become available on DVD.

Now let's get that live action Black Panther movie going, I can't wait for this, absolutely awesome news!!

Yeah I too am REAL upset this will be on BET. I was hoping it would be on a station that more fits the show I have yet to see a second of. Something like CMT...

Posted by: knack on July 15, 2008 at 13:50:38

I'm hoping it creates enough buzz so we can get a Black Panther movie, so i'm going to be all for this.

Posted by: Some random guy on July 15, 2008 at 13:50:40

In all honesty, though, I am pretty excited about this show and think it will be the shizenite

Posted by: kirbyfan on July 15, 2008 at 13:53:42

Batman would put up one heck of a fight, but the Panther already defeated Captain America and The Fantastic Four!

As good and as tough as Batman is, the Panther would show him the real deal!

Unfortunately, it is sad to comment on the state of certain comics/cartoon 'fans' where such ignorance comes out from "keyboard klansmen" to start bashing series based on black characters before anything even comes out.. I look forward to the sneak peek and the eventual series..

Posted by: sir sadistic on July 15, 2008 at 14:07:49

god this board has a bunch of klansmen in it

i will watch this show most defenetley as i nevel miss anything marvel

black panther was awesome in avengers animated 2

really want a black panther movie there are tons of good actors who could play him id love to see tyrese gibson as the panther

shh should ban the users who posted racist comment

Posted by: knack on July 15, 2008 at 14:09:52

The great thing about Black Panther is that he was hardcore from the get go. Taking on the FF on his first appearance- and single-handed already!
He has been a difficult character to make truly popular because he is royalty and not like say, Peter Parker who is closer to you and I, but the last couple of series of Black Panther went with a techno/geo-political angle that really worked and really showed what lengths he would go to to protect Wakanda.

Black Panther...meh
well once upon a time i used to say that about Iron Man. so this series might actually do ol' kitty cat sum good

Posted by: ComposerDude on July 15, 2008 at 14:13:36

This will be a wonderful series to bring to television! Frankly, Black Panther is one of the best heroes out there. And there really should be no worries on the fanboys minds. Hudlin said they're adapting John Romita Jr's art, so it's bound to be quality all around.

Way to go BET!

Posted by: Not Stupider on July 15, 2008 at 14:20:49

Cool. Will be awesome to see JRJR's art come to life. And since they're adapting from the comic, the story will be good too.
But, in all fairness, it should be on more than jus BET.

Posted by: MemnochZERO on July 15, 2008 at 14:22:13

Yeah, I'm sure the writing will be fine, I just hope the animtion is top notch. Marvel's animation standards, as far as television goes, have just been dropping. I'd hate to see a potentially awesome series ruined by piss poor animation.
