Hancock Hits it Big with $107 million
July 6, 2008
The big buzz going into the weekend was the exciting prospect of Will Smith's return to the 4th of July holiday for the first time since Men in Black II six years ago. Despite way more bad advance reviews than some expected, Hancock was able to bring in enough of Smith's fans to deliver an impressive $107 million in five and a half days. The $66 million estimated for the three-day holiday weekend in just under 4,000 theaters (an average of $16.6k per site) would make it Smith's second-biggest opening weekend ever after last year's I Am Legend and the second-biggest three-day gross for a 4th of July weekend after Spider-Man 2 based on estimates. It's good to keep in mind that it's only slightly ahead of Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds with $64.9 million, so it could end up in third place. It certainly had a stronger showing over the weekend than its first couple days, grossing just over $17 million per day on Wednesday and Thursday after grossing $6.8 million from Tuesday night previews. Hancock is already Will Smith's 8th consecutive movie to gross $100 million, an impressive feat that has never been accomplished before this.
Internationally, Hancock earned an impressive $78.3 million at 5,444 theaters in 50 markets. It marks the third-biggest opening of the year, behind only Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Iron Man. The Will Smith superhero film averaged $14,400 per location. Combined with its domestic take of $107 million, the movie has already earned $185.3 million worldwide.

Haha. I saw that movie and sure it's okay, But we all know Dark Knight is going to beat the pants off of it.

Zowies!! OK movie!

Hancock was a good movie IMO. It was funny and serious at the same time. Will stole the show as usual. I give Hancock a B. It was an enjoyable movie. Now on to TDK.

No way will this movie beat TDK, it's a good movie don't get me wrong but let's face it this is just a flimsy superhero tale while The Dark Knight will be an event, But I'm glad those first couple people are able to live in a dreamworld.

By the way I also think Hellboy 2 has a strong chance of taking the top spot next week anyway.

John...Johnny boy...to kid like that is the same as saying "sex with hot women is totally overrated! It's so much better with men! old men! fat old men!" so pretty much you just admitted to preferring sex with old fat men over a perfect beautiful woman...but that's okay man...whatever floats your boat...there's nothing wrong with you, your jsut special ;)
p.S. That movie wasn't as ****ty as MIB2 but still pretty lame and lazy...Dark knight is in fact the greatest superhero film of all time...or so say the reviews so far.

Year of the superhero (comic book) movie, Hancock was comendable, Iron Man was awesome, Incredible Hulk was good, Wanted was on point, Hellboy looks like it's got serious potential, and The Dark Knight will sit on the thrown.

LOL. Its like "Will Smith Movie" is a Genre itself. I guess there is nothing wrong with it, he is a good actor :P
The first half of hancock was great and looked like had potential. But the second half really ruined it. I am not too fond of the ending.

There is no way that Hancock is going to beat The Dark Knight in opening weekend gross. TDK will crush 66 mil, and will probably beat 107 mil in 3 days(it took hancock 5 days).

think that TDK will be just an average to okay movie but Hancock definitely has the total overall package of entertainment and story
Thats why it has a 36% on RT and a 5.3/10 Average Rating.

the rating at RT pretty much sums up how I feel about the movie, it simply is OK, nothing deep enough to make it great. Calling BIG drop after this weekend.

John, are you nuts?? The best movie of the year??? HAAAAA!! You are going to eat your words when "The Dark Knight" is released. "Hancock" will fizzle out quick and will be on DVD as early as Sept.!! The movie sucked!!! What started out on the right foot quickly fizzled after an illogical and unnecessary twist!!!
Posted by: kevlar on July 6, 2008 at 14:38:51
yea, the movie was a bit different than what i was expecting, but it was still a great summer Will Smith movie. it probably won't be long before we see Hancock have a comic series of his own. the movie is very funny at some times but very serious at others.

hancock was a big surprise i actually liked the the serious twist to the movie even though most criticts didnt. lookin forward to dark knight

oh if only tdk would open on Monday I mean imagine how much it would make think bout it ladies the movie is already sold out all around for the 17th give people another chance at it on the 16th and again on the 15th i bet anything tdk would make around 200 face the facts John Hancock needed 5 days to make 60 mil TDK will only need one to make that and calling it a good movie when every review for Hancock says its **** just makes you look even more like an idiot
Posted by: Jay on July 6, 2008 at 14:42:50
Yeah, **** all of you for making this movie successful. It was mediocre at best. Oh well, games over July 18th.
Posted by: Jam on July 6, 2008 at 14:42:52
There is no F***ing way this beats TDK...Are you people carzy?...
Hand over all your crack now...
Im serious...No more...
Its making you delusional...All that crack..
Hancock beats TDK...
I should call the cops on you people for all that crack you have to make you say such things.

what the hell does this movie have to do with TDK? I'm excited about it as much as anyone else, but what why even bring it up here?
that said, Hancock was pretty funny...not great, not bad, but just the standard entertaining summer flick..I liked it
Posted by: DarkVengeance on July 6, 2008 at 14:48:05
Any of you that are saying that Hancock will be better than TDK, hey whatever crack your smoking I would cut it out, its bad for you
Posted by: TPJR on July 6, 2008 at 14:52:20
Good, I'm glad. I thought it was great and deserves to bring in the cash.
Hellboy might do some damage to it, then obviously Batman will steal most of it's revenue...
Posted by: TrEv on July 6, 2008 at 14:59:26
this is easily going to beat hancock...i mean come on..hancock didn't even have a villian...it was an ok movie and if it wasnt for will...it woulda sucked...TDK is going to rack up 150 mil opening weekend
