Astro Boy Voice Cast Announced
Source:Imagi Studios
June 16, 2008

Summit Entertainment and Imagi Studios have entered into a global alliance whereby Summit will distribute Imagi's upcoming CG-animated motion picture Astro Boy worldwide except for Imagi's reserved territories of Japan, Hong Kong and China. The announcement was made jointly by Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment and Douglas Glen, CEO of Imagi Studios.

"We are pleased to join with Imagi Studios in bringing the exceptional world of 'Astro Boy' to both existing and a new generation of fans alike," said Friedman. "The team at Imagi Studios is capturing the spirit of this popular post-modern franchise by doing great things with the story, characters and animation. 'Astro Boy' promises to be an excellent addition to our existing slate of family films."

Glen said, "'Astro Boy' has been one of the world's best-known and most loved superheroes for more than fifty years. We are pleased to partner with Summit to deliver 'Astro Boy''s first CGI feature film to worldwide audiences on a grand scale. Imagi and Summit are a great fit, with high energy, entrepreneurial cultures and a vision of building movie-driven global brands."

Slated for worldwide theatrical release in 2009, "Astro Boy" will feature the voices of Academy AwardŽ-winning actor Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy with Freddie Highmore in the title role. David Bowers is directing ASTRO BOY from a screenplay written by Timothy Harris, with Maryann Garger producing.

ASTRO BOY was created by the "god of manga", Japan's Osamu Tezuka, in the early 1950s. The iconic character has since found wide popularity around the world as the hero of three acclaimed animated television series spanning the past four decades, besides being one of the top licensed properties for merchandising.

Set in futuristic Metro City, Imagi Studios' Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.

Astro Boy is the second CG-animated feature film from Imagi Studios, following its 2007 release TMNT.

I wonder if they will have his ass gun like in the cartoon?

Nicolas Cage? Anime. Nononono. Unless he's playing a tree in the background whose only sound is blowing in the wind, then by all means put him in.

He's already proved to us that he can't do superhero movies (Ghost Rider anyone? "I'm speaking to the power within..." WHAT). How many more genres does this guy have to do before everyone realizes that he has ONE character: Southern guy. That's it.

Other than that cast looks pretty good.

Imagi needs to make a CGI Usagi Yojimbo movie. I would die and crap my pants!

Posted by: Twilley on June 16, 2008 at 13:52:08

I agree with Uchiro, a Usagi flick would be awesome!

rocksauce - "Southern guy" attributes a much broader range of acting than Mr. Cage is capable of. I would classify him as an Elvis impersonator although thankfully he has never attempted to sing. That seems to be what he does in almost every role, especially Johnny Blaze, since "Birdy" with only a few exceptions. His is not a great voice for a voice actor either.

I think I would have prefered actual voice actors... I'm getting pretty tired of mainstream actors being hired to do voice work. Horton Hears a Who was the worst, the voices were way too bland to match the faces the characters were making.

SHH!:

Please remove the "first!" comment.

Thanks

STOP THE ANIME!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!

Posted by: justin on June 16, 2008 at 17:05:30

How does Nick Cage continue to still get employment. The only character he can play is himself, from Raising Arizona to Ghost Rider. Pull a stranger off the street to read his lines and they'll do it better

do people who do first have that little to do during the day? wow. get a life, people

Posted by: Hellboy on June 16, 2008 at 17:29:11

i would rather someone do an impression of nicholas cage instead of the real thing in this movie. it would be much more funny and full of life.

bill nighy, donald sutherland, nathan lane, eugene levy, even the high pitched squeal of highmore are perfect for animation... but not cage.

nicholas cage is a soggy piece of bread.

They have my attention now I want a kickass trailer

Posted by: cpu278 on June 16, 2008 at 19:21:39

Indeed, Cage is not doing Astro's voice, but I don't think he'll be a tree on the background neither =
To those anime-haters, read about Astroboy first, it's not your common hack'n'slash thing..

I'm looking forward to Astro Boy. They've been trying to make this for years.

(*sniff*-*sniff*) I smell loser, is that you, Josh? You win the grand prize of the title "Dip-****" for having nothing better to do than to call "first"! Come take a bow!
