Witchblade Coming to the Big Screen
May 12, 2008
Variety says that Platinum Studios, Top Cow Productions and Arclight Films will team on a live-action feature adaptation of "Witchblade," based on the Top Cow comic book franchise.
The comic book introduced the "Witchblade" mythology, which centers on an ornate jewel-encrusted gauntlet that gives extraordinary powers to the wearer, a specially chosen female from each generation.
The film will be produced by Arclight's Gary Hamilton and Nigel Odell, Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Steve Squillante of Havenwood Media. Top Cow's Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins will be executive producers with Platinum Studios' Rich Marincic and Greenberg Group's Randy Greenberg.
The comic book franchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since debuting in 1995 and spawned a 2000 telepic that turned into a weekly series that ran for two seasons on TNT.
"This property is the cornerstone of our upcoming production and sales slate," said Arclight CEO Gary Hamilton. "We hope to be able to start production in September."
The companies are already eyeing a location shoot in Australia.

My first thought when I read the title was: live action or animation?
The first sentence answered that question. The television series was horrid, but the anime was an interesting take.
I just hope they handle the material well and don't further screw over women in comic-based film roles. That means not just another pretty face but SOMEONE WHO CAN ACT!
Posted by: earz on May 12, 2008 at 01:52:07
with the proper director and actress leading the way (a la early Kate Beckinsale) this could do well but they would prob prefer a young pretty face who acts crappy and the movie wud prob end up bombing!!!

The only good parts of Elektra were when Jennifer Garner was actually in the red costume.
So if they get the costume right here, it won't matter if it sucks. I'll watch an hour and a half of a nearly nude buff chick in a skimpy CGI scab. But I will not go if it's a full suit of armor like it was on TV.

LYT: Jennifer Garner looked retarded in Elektra, the dopey ears and skrawny body was only emphasized when she wore the red suit. I'd kick the casting director in the face. There are so much better looking and more capable actresses out there that would bury Garner as Elektra.
I do agree that Witchblade better curb away from what they did in the TV series, that sucked. Make it R rated and keep to the material.

Hopefully this time they get a hot chick to play Sara... If they do it right, this could be a great flick, but they'll need a decent budget.

Please god don't let them make a balls up of this again. The TV show was pathetic and did the comic no justice at all....

Man if this works out good, then maybe we'll finally get to see The Darkness movie like they've been talking about for years.
Posted by: Archangel on May 12, 2008 at 08:04:59
I hope this will be more faithful to the comic book instead of that crap of a television series!!!
Posted by: Michael on May 12, 2008 at 08:25:54
Oh man first Witchblade then not long after should come good old Jakie in The Darkness!!!!!
Posted by: john on May 12, 2008 at 09:48:22
ohboy.. another bloodrayne..
This will be godawful it might even make GI Joe look good... well i doubt that.. but it will still suck.
Posted by: Lambo on May 12, 2008 at 09:53:51
I was just thinking about Bloodrayne john.
Movie studios think they can make a sweet ass movie just by having the main character be a chick who kills people. Ultraviolet? Aeon Flux? Bloodrayne? Doomsday?
How about a good movie?

I'm hoping that by having some of the creators on board as producers will keep this one more faithful to the comics. Everyone should just look at Iron Man and see, hey, character designs and stories that are like, straight from the books, who'd have thunk that would work?

I LOVED the series and have been waiting along time for them to try and make a movie of Witchblade I hope it gets made.

first, witchblade wasn't that great a book. second im expecting a bloodrayne. no hope or interest
Posted by: heath on May 12, 2008 at 12:41:54
hopefully the movie is more faithful than that crap ass tv show they did a few years ago.

i think meagan fox would be hot in a witchblade outfit but i would love to see rachel sterling in the outfit she has the body and the michael turner style lips for the look if sara

I just hope they keep it a full armor like in the TV series. I know alot of people want to see a half-naked Sarah Pezzini running around, but I don't think I could take it seriously or pay attention to the story if she were.

I am not too concerned about the Witchblade character herself, I just hope Irons and Nottingham are done right. Both absolutely sucked in the show. Nottingham looked VERY wrong and his role was completely wrong as well.

Hey you have to admit that there was at least one good thing about the Witchblade series. The title. Man I remember one day at work I said that I was disapointed in the look of the Witchblade and my co worker looked shocked and then a little upset then to calm him down I had to tell him that I was talking about the Witchblade weapon not being more organic and just not looking like what I thought it should and not the actress. But in reality I was talking about the actress.

First off to all you haters and second-guessers..
The witchblade tv show was bad-a$$... the anime is great, but it's a completely different storyline, person, etc...
CGI and movies/tv has come along way too since then and they can do alot more now than in 1999.
I have been a witchblade addict since the comic book series started, and it just gets better and better. I was addicted to the tv show, am addicted to the comic, addicted to the anime, and I can't wait for the movie!!!! Go Top Cow!!!

Im not looking forward to this at all.
The TV show was pure butt. I have no faith in them actually making this how it should be.
It wont be gritty or dark. Probably a pg-13 rating too. bleh
It really sucks though, because the comic has been great for years.

man the actress is going to have to work out like a triathalete just to fit in the lack of costume
Posted by: Will on May 12, 2008 at 21:56:01
don't forget the japanese anime.
But which version will be used as the basis though/
