Buck Rogers is Coming to the Big Screen
May 8, 2008
Do they, or don't they have the rights? Nu Image/Millennium Films told IGN that no deal is in place yet, but now Variety says that Nu Image/Millennium Films has acquired film rights to "Buck Rogers," and will develop a live-action feature about the venerable pilot who awakens in the 25th Century and battles evil.
IGN also reported that Sin City and The Spirit director Frank Miller was attached to helm the pic, but the company later told them "they are still mulling over director contenders."
Buck Rogers has enjoyed incarnations in books, comic strips, movies, radio and television, a run that began in the 1920s. That included a feature serial from Universal in 1939 that starred Buster Crabbe, and a short-lived NBC series that starred Gil Gerard.
Nu Image/Millennium will search for a studio partner, just the way it did after gaining the movie rights from Paradox Entertainment to "Conan," which is now being developed with Lionsgate.

We already have a Buck Rodgers project in the works. It's called G.I.J.O.E. No, wait. The article said Buck Rodgers, right? G.I.J.O.E.?
No, wait. I'm confused. Buck Rodgers is G.I.J.O.E., right?
Buck Rodgers! Yeah!!
I think.
Never mind.

This has as much potential as any incarnation or any "re-imagining" of any classic story anybody's done. Yep, it could be cool, but I won't tell you what past experience has caused me to put my money on.
Maybe this time will be different. Maybe THIS TIME someone with competence, funds, reason, and clout will get the project, and YES, it will be AWESOME... like we all suspect 'WATCHMEN' will be...
but we don't know.

That's great! Hopefully the movie will renew interest in the pulp fiction heroes. There are lots of great characters (Doc Savage, the Shadow, Dr. Fu Manchu, etc.) that could be done really well with modern special effects.

Trying to update something that old will turn it in to somthing unrecognizable. So whats the point?
Can't they come up with some fresh ideas?
Posted by: Abe on May 8, 2008 at 23:53:11
if they did this, having frank miller in the director's chair would not get me buying a movie ticket.

NO, NO, NOOO!!! They have already tainted the majority of my childhood, they are not gonna do that to "Buck Rogers".
It will suck! It WILL suck!! Let the major protesting begin, baby!!
I'll keep everyone posted...

as long as they dont "Will Ferrelize" it.
then again, Gil Gerard MUST have some kind of cameo.
oh yeah, the last frank miller directed movie I saw was Robocop 3.
If that is any indication I will wait till this airs on TBS.

Unbelievable how writers now have given in to having no true imagination.
Writers/producers promoting rehashes to the studios should choke to death on a their own tongues.

I can't wait to see twiggy... beedeep beedeep beedeep heya Buck! Hell ya.. I wish that Erin Grey was still in her prime to do this. She was so hot back then. Not sure I'm really excited to see this, but it did bring back some old school memories. I guess I'll have to wait and see what they come up with.

Ok, if we're talkin' making 70's era franchises, let us also consider; The Six Million (Or six hundred million)Dollar(Or euro, since the dollar has fallen behind) Man, and Kung Fu. Two of my faves. Let see... what else can we destroy...into the 80's...Knight Rider! Oh wait, NBC already wrecked that one...twice. The A Team! Great concept-Horrible show. Airwolf. Voyagers-Shortlived but fun...to me. Anyway, it was fun going down memory lane. Thanks Hollywood for destroying my childhood memories...and innocence! Bastards.

Seriously, what is wrong with you people? Your whole childhood is ruined if somebody makes a movie based on characters in a stupid TV show you watched as a kid? How sad. Look, I have fond memories of these shows too. But creating an updated version doesn't ruin my memories of the old show. It's a completely separate entity. What it does is give a new generation of fans a chance to share in some of the fun...and if it's good, then maybe create some nostalgia for the old version. But it's ridiculous the way you people want everything frozen in time, exactly the way you remember it. Most of these shows were not as good as you remember them (I've been watching them on DVD lately and realizing how bad they were). Some of these shows can really benefit from a few updates. Sometimes the updates are good, sometimes, they're not. But I don't see how the new one effects your appreciation of the old show. The old show is what it is, and the new show is what it is. Personally, I would be more offended if they did try to do the show EXACTLY the same way. But I don't mind them taking a good concept and trying to do something interesting with it. If they hadn't done that, you crybabies never would have had your precious memories of the 70's Buck, because it originated in the 20's. Now you want to be selfish and keep that version frozen in time??? Suck it up, you crybabies.

"For 500 years, Buck Rogers drifted through a world in which reality and fantasy merged into a timeless dream:
Cue extra cheddar-cheese 70's music:
"Far Beyond the World I've known - Far Beyond my Time!"
I'm so not going to see this!

It so worked well for Flash Gordon!

If Buck Rogers is from the twenties and occupies a time in the 25th century, and they are going to remake today a re-imagined Buck from thirty-plus years ago, which is from my past while being from my father's past and ruined his childhood, all the while threatening to become my kids' future which will be their past thus ruining my childhood and since Buck is still 400 hundred years in the future waiting to suck the entire world into ---- BUCK ROGERS IS THE BLACK HOLE THAT WILL DEVOUR THE EARTH AND UNIVERSE. oh...your...god.

@ GK1
Frank Miller DID NOT direct RoboCop 3, he simply wrote a script which he was pretty much pissed off on. In fact, i've heard that Miller's work on the script was only an overall glance, and that most of the stuff was trashed due to the studio's attempt at 'childrenifying' the franchise. I dunno why people hate RoboCop 2 though, that movie KICKS ASS! and yes, i can say ASS because ASS has a dual meaning. So stop ****ING with me! Sorry... that last part wasn't at GK1, just something i needed to get off my chest. As for Duck Dogers... i mean... Buck Rogers... i dunno, Flash Gordon wasn't okay. And like that guy up there said, bringing back something that old will only change and 'transform' it so much that it would be out of context. Why bother? And i thing the whole space-age soap opera is done and overdone one too many times already. You want SCI-FI perfection? Bring on more future dystopias, or to be more precise, i'd really like to see a movie about a 'modern and big-budget' mad scientist at work in this post-War On Terror universe. By the way, anyone seen the AngRy Scientist who lived in the Big City?
