Young X-Men Get Gossip Girl Scribe?

In some odd Friday evening news, BlackBook magazine talked to Josh Schwartz, the writer and executive producer of shows like "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck" (soon to be getting his own comic book!) and found out that he'd taken over the job of writing a screenplay for a Young X-Men movie (that title still hasn't been confirmed) which originally was to be written by Zack Penn. What's even odder than that juicy news is that BlackBook then took the story down, even though you can still see the original post at the link below. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, we were able to grab some of the original text which had Schwartz saying some rather unflattering remarks about his superhero peers and predecessors:

Something he can talk about, however, is news that he will pen the screenplay for the next installment of X-Men, a prequel of sorts. "I'm very well aware that I'll be bludgeoned by purists, but I love its mythology, and it comes with a pretty hefty paycheck." Of the project, he beams with excitement about the opportunity to involve lesser known X-Men characters who haven't yet been portrayed on film. It will center on teenage characters at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. "It's not like I'm adding new characters like Toaster Head, or anything like that." Despite his enthusiam, he's cautious, given the double-edged sword inherent in the seemingly inexhaustible renaissance of the genre. "The Hulk looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield? I mean, with Transformers, it's not like fans were going to come back saying, 'You used the wrong car.' This, however, is a different story." Of his predecessors and their successes (or failures), he says, "Brett Ratner didn't have a lot of credibility going in to the third X-Men movie, but I think Bryan Singer [who directed the first two installments] got a free pass on Superman Returns because of his work on X-Men."

Young X-men another Crap we don't need First BTW

Posted by: k18 on May 2, 2008 at 23:29:04

wow, he certainly doesn't shy away from giving his opinions on past comic book movies. lol

Posted by: Captain America on May 2, 2008 at 23:29:54

We haven't really been given X-Men as far as the comic book representation is concerned. I know we're trying to make broad, general movies for the average movie go-er, non-comic book fan, but really, Ironman stayed very true to the comic, while being extremely entertaining. The same can be done with X-Men. I say, relaunch it.

you're not first Kungsta. lol

YOUR A DUMB ***** JOSH SCHWARTZ What gives him the right to say anything what have you done oh yeah Gossip girl which is just plain **** that comes out your ass. I wouldn't watch a young xmen movie written by anyone especially Josh Schwartz. What a freaking scumbag cocky and stupid is a bad combination he writes **** and I will remember his name just so i don't watch anything he does. Opinion or not he has done nothing that gives him credibility in my book.

Why cant we just do the movies like the comics and quit turning it into a douche?

Do New Mutants or something, but dont do "young Xmen". If its like Gossip Girl...wow what credibility.

Rather watch the news.

can't wait to see some more news about the script and maybe some actors.

Why is he down on Hulk? ...Why is EVERYBODY down on Hulk?

Posted by: cpu278 on May 2, 2008 at 23:44:13

So he thinks he's got a 'free pass' because of Traship Girls? ha

My favorite parts of this article:

"The Hulk looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield? I mean, with Transformers, it's not like fans were going to come back saying, 'You used the wrong car.'"

"I think Bryan Singer... got a free pass on Superman Returns"

Good luck, buddy!

Not sure who this guy thinks he is, but come on! What kind of person accepts a job from someone (Marvel) and then goes on to trash other movies by the same company, especially ones he hasn't seen yet? As far as I'm concerned, this guy can take his script for "Young X-men" and shove it, along with the rest of the trash he writes.

i'm speechless...what an ass...

Posted by: Adam West on May 3, 2008 at 00:14:42

He might not have any credibility.... but then again he's doing YOUNG X-MEN!!!! Why are we getting so worked up? This movie is as about as important as 1992's Captain America.

sorry to offend anyone, but i agree with everything this guy has to say. i'm sorry but hulk DOES look like it'll suck. come on now, most will admit that X3 was dank, too. i'm not by any means bashing these characters because i'm a fan of them all, but that doesn't mean that i'll like every damn thing they're involved in. the hulk cgi doesn't look like much of an improvement since the Bana hulk. i'll still see it, just out of curiosity, but noentheless, i have my doubts. i think x-men needs to stop already. 3 movies and a handful of possible spin-offs? enough is enough. there are more characters to be portrayed on the big screen (i AM excited for Wolverine, though.)

Wow what a arrogant SOB! I mean come on dude what are you complaining about, "The Hulk looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield? THE MOVIE ISNT OUT YET A*S. And why is he putting everyone else down? Yes I dont like Bret Ratner and Brian Singer I think treats his movies like my Grandpa treats his Sunday drive, nice and slow, but they have accomplished some good **** the last couple of years, more than himself. He is just p*ssed because he is a mediocre writer who got stuck with a mediocre property from Marvel, sorry buddy maybe if you did not write melodramtic teen dramas with lots of sexual tension in every episode you might get respect but until you accomplish something theatrically compelling with substance, shut you ****ing mouth...a*s.

Posted by: Matt on May 3, 2008 at 00:21:28

Wow. The man who writes Gossip Girl, The O.C. and Chuck critiquing the work of another? Can't say I disagree with him on The Incredible Hulk, but still. Ballsy phucker.

I do like the idea of Young X-Men, though. At the very least, it's a chance for a movie without Wolverine.

He talks about what a big paycheck he'll get and how other comic book films look bad? Gosh, I can't wait for his take. Looks like Fox certainly isn't taking this project seriously - guess I won't either.

The immortal words of Josh Schwartz:

"I'm very well aware that I'll be bludgeoned by purists, but I love its mythology, and I'm a big douche."

"The Hulk looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield? My douche-vision doesn't allow me to see the difference between disrespect of source material and transliteration between mediums."

"I mean, with Transformers, it's not like fans were going to come back saying, 'You used the wrong car.' because nobody cares about Transformers nerds. This, however, is a different story. Because I'm a giant douche bag."

"Brett Ratner didn't have a lot of credibility going in to the third X-Men movie, completely unlike myself going into this project, but I think Bryan Singer got a free pass on Superman Returns because of his work on X-Men. Obviously everyone shares my opinion on the film and any other thoughts are cases of fanboy favoritism. My douche-sense tells me so."

Posted by: Denny Colt on May 3, 2008 at 00:25:52

You know I dont like the Hulk at all, but every movie deserves a chance, and I am so sick of the CGI dosent look right, well I wonder why it does not look like real life? Oh wait...its not real life. CGI has gotten good but who cares if its not 100% perfect, The Incredible Hulk seriously has some good visuals to it so far from what we all have been shown, ya maybe it might suck but give it a shot and stop complaining about CGI, if you dont like it get a degree in computer graphics and fix it but stop complaining.

Anonymous you hit it right on the head, good job.

wow.. i ****in hate him. what a pompous anus.
let's boycot his ****, bookmark / save this interview, and keep bringing it up... he said so himself, he's doing it for the "hefty paycheck"

...douche.
