EXCL: Brandon Routh on Superman: Man of Steel

April 29, 2008
ComingSoon.net has posted an exclusive interview with Brandon Routh in which he talks about the Superman Returns sequel, Superman: Man of Steel, whether he would do a Batman vs. Superman movie, his thoughts on the Justice League movie and starring as Dylan Dog in Dead of Night. Here's a clip on "Man of Steel":
Well, I think that something that audiences are looking for – and I certainly am, too – is for Superman to actually be able to lay a punch on someone or something. I was filming and I thought, "I haven't really hit anything. I feel like I'm going to need to let some of this anger out." So I'm happy that I think that's going to be a central part of the sequel, getting a good villain that we can actually have physical altercations with. Certainly also, I'd like more humor from Clark or just more of Clark and Jimmy. A little bit more of Lois and Clark, how we used to see them, a bit more of buddies. Perhaps things will be smoothed over with Superman and Lois and she can afford to be a little bit nicer to Clark. I think that's something that people want to see and those are some of the great moments from previous "Superman" films. Also, Superman and Lois getting together, that's always my end goal. I want that to happen. The romantic in me wants that to happen eventually whether they're finally together in this movie or in whatever future films there might be. I kind of want to see that happen.

the art of killing slowley.Ironman will make more in the box office it will most definitly beat batman begins and the darknight.dont get me wrong i am a batman fan but you darknight fans all way say batman begins was the best batman moive when tim burtons batman has the biggest box office revenu of the series. Now you have maggie gylanhal who is not hot but has acting abilty.well we have gwenith palltro hot and academy award winner. You have a moive that is a copy of the crow with batman.we have a orig**** cult classic moive.ps you have a dull non human emotionless bruce wayne we have a clever carazmatic sarcatic playboy who does not run away from his problems.Batman is becoming less relevent by the moment almost at superman status.

Hopefully this one will be better than the first. It was merely a so-so movie, quite weak, no pun intended.

Wow, someone said Batman is becoming irrelevant? You've got to be kidding me. Now, I love the original Batman movie, and Batman Returns was alright too, but let's face Batman Begins was better. The only better part of the original Batman was that it had the Joker in it, and The Dark Knight will solve that. I loved Keaton as Batman and Nicholson as the Joker, but I think the new series has the old ones beat. As far as Superman, I'm glad we may be able to see some real "Superman action", but I am still weary about the whole Super-boy thing. Where does that fit in to anything? It just seems like that would get in the way of what could be great Superman stories to come.

also Bruce Wayne isn't emotionless - he's angry, sad and fearful of what is to come of the city. And Batman Begins was nothing like The Crow - other than the fact that is was dark outside for most of it and they both wear black.

Don't kid yourself "Winged Avenger."
Batman is an American ICON..He is to the U.S. what James Bond is to the British. So your point about his popularity diminishing is nill.
The Dark Knight looks to be one of the better films made in recent years, and has one of the best assembled csts in history. Oh, and about Oscar caliber performers? How about Sir Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger (R.I.P.), Christian Bale, and the great Gary Oldman?
Don't get me wrong, Iron man looks good, but not as good as TDK. Tony Stark is somewhat of a carbon-copy of Bruce Wayne (billionaire playboy who fights war on crime), and was created 20-30 years after.
Batman has a MUCH larger following than Iron Man, and this will always be the case.

Singer's movie was underrated, but Returns is the best possible modernize story for this sterile post 9/11 period. 7 / 10
But I'd like to see the conclusion of whole Superman saga in the sequel (in 2010.) and third / fifth / seventh movie (with Doomsday) for some 6-7 years. I hope that will not be stupid like III or criminal commercial disaster like IV. (sorry for my english :).

You took the words outta my mouth, Evermore. But I'm divided by the Super-child thing. Part of me thinks it's a bad idea. On the other hand, the Superman movies (at least the first and the second) had Supes do things that he didn't do in the comics, particularly having him sleep with Lois and the kid seems a natural extension of that. And the thing with Supes in the comics is that there have always been multiple versions from multiple earths. So I see the kid as opening up possibilities instead of getting in the way of them.

i really liked superman returns. there were parts of it i thought that were amazing and even poetic, which is rare for superhero films. routh did a great job.
iron man looks ok - but doesn't seem too deep. more like candy.

Great interview and I loved what Routh had to say. I am really looking forward even more to see M.O.S. I just hope there will be more action.

I like Routh, I believe Singer hindered his performance. I mean, all in all the Superman Returns had SOME promise- but in the documentary/behind the scenes footage you can clearly see that Singer had them all by the balls as to what HE envisioned and what the actors/writers originally had in mind.
Hands down, Singer needs to be dropped like a bad habit, he just copies everyone else. "Oh, the next Batman movie is going to be called The Dark Knight? Then I'll name my next movie Man Of Steel and call it a homage- it's not lazy writing or plagiarism if I call it a homage!!!"

Superman Returns, for the last time, was a special effects filled movie that was a bad copy of the first. Luther trying to destroy the world and make a new one, his Posey assistant getting all emotional and trying to do good just like the "bad" girl in Superman 1.
And finally Superman being a dead beat dad.
He flew into space because remnents of Krypton might have been there. Huh? Did we not establish for a long time and in the movie world as well that Krypton was destroyed!!!
Furthermore if anyone saw The Richard Donner Cut of Superman, the version that we should have seen, that Superman would not have a kid at all. Regardless, Superman Returns was a bad comeback movie and thats sad because Routh was good as Superman.
If they do press forward they need to get fresh faces or Superman will be the one that's irrelevant. And to the guy who said Bat's was becoming irrelevant, you sir must be living in Bizzaro world. While you're there hopefully you can talk Bizzaro to coming here and giving Supes a worthy foe to knock around on the big screen, thanks!

listen listen...call it just 'THE MAN OF STEEL" everybody knows who that is. Superman is a legend! Just like "THE DARK KNIGHT." Also Bizarro in this one to fight Superman and he is created from a secret goverment project to create a 'just in case' weapon to defeat Superman to protect human if Sups goes batty. This weapon is created with the help of, guess who, an incarcerated Lex Luther of course! Sups finds him in the beginning of the film and takes him to a maximum security prison. ALSO LOIS FINDS OUT HE'S SUPS! Geez he knocked her up he needs to take care of his responsibility! And it's quite a responsibility when Sups JR. starts exploring his abilities and getting into a bit of trouble. I have the whole freaking story...yo SINGER call me!!!!!

You're the only one who's angry here "Winged Avenger." I'm just stating the facts.
Box office success doesn't equal quality either. How about Spiderman 3? Or maybe X3? Both did great in the box office, but were terrible movies.
Oh, and try a period in your rants sometimes...It usually helps with spacing out your points (or lack there of). I believe there is an "e" after garbage too...

This summer is going to be filled with superhero movies, and to me that means either a final hoo-ah for the genre or the killing of it, depending on how all the movies go. I just hope the movie studios don't take a turn for the worse like they did with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, which was the way it was looking to go with the proposed JLA movie. As for a Superman Sequel, I don't see how this could be a good idea. Routh did not do a good job as Superman, and on a second note why would someone hire someone to play a role because he supposedly resembles the previous actor to play it, and not because he resembles the character? Both Routh and Singer should let Returns be the final chapter on their involvement in the Superman saga, as they will only change Supes in a similar fashion to the way Schumacher did to Batman.

"Batman is becoming less relevent by the moment almost at superman status"
Ironman will be cool, no doubt. But, with that said, Batman and Superman have iconic status that no other hero/heroes have. Sometimes that's actually a detriment to them both. Batman is legendary and Superman is a God. Fifty years from now some other director will be bringing "back" Superman and Batman to the big screen because they are ALWAYS relevent to the times. They are today's mythology; The Hero With A Thousand faces, along with many other super-heroes.
And please, is it just me or do others find it hard to believe that some can actually type that bad?!
Peace,
R

YES, that is EXACTLY what we want MORE DONNERVERSE rehash...
What the hell is this idiot rambling about? If I wanted more of the old movies I'd watch the OLD movies.
G-d I HATE Bryan Singer.

First off Batman Begins was the best Batman movie EVER! I have seen the Crow many time and the Jokers makeup kind of sort of looking like the Crow doesn't mean that he will be anything like the Crow. Batman has become as dark as he was meant to be. These new Batman movie show the darkness that Batman is fighting, and thats what all Batman fans want. Superman on the other hand shows us about truth and justice and doing whats right, thats what we want to see, however would would like to see superman kick some butt too. I hope this new Superman movie will give us that very thing. The two biggest names in comic book history BATMAN and SUPERMAN I can't wait to see them both!
