Paltrow, Tyler & Gyllenhaal on Starring in Comic Book Movies
Source:USA Weekend
April 21, 2008

USA Weekend brought together Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler and Maggie Gyllenhaal to talk about starring in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and The Dark Knight, respectively. Here's a clip with a spoiler on The Dark Knight:

Was it lonely being the only woman in a comic book movie?
Liv: I'm used to that world from "The Lord of the Rings," even though it wasn't really a comic book.
Maggie: Everybody on my set was a guy! I have two lovers in the movie, and they're both these gorgeous men. Come to think of it, there were a lot of powerful, manly men around, and I didn't mind that particularly. [Laughs.]
Gwyneth: Mine was definitely a testosterone-fest. I was the only girl for miles, except for the women working in the wardrobe, hair and makeup departments. I would have time off when the guys would go blow things up in the desert, and every time I went back to work, they were happy to have a girl there. They had kind of forgotten that there were women in the world.

Maggie - two lovers?

Something romantic with Wayne and Dent? Or does Harvey count as one and Two-Face another?

Looking forward to lame romantic subplots!

3 really great actresses in graphic novel based movies....
1 ok movie...iron man??? Im hopping jon favreau uses his natural talent with improv dialogue, to make this fun..

1 possible good movie...hulk..( ed norton script is convincing me it will be at least good..if not awesome. But this director did the awful transporter and the brillinat unleashed..so im confused..

And one guarenteed amazing cinematic masterpiece ..TDK.
Maggie gyllenhall got the best deal..

Cant wait for the dark knight..maggie will do a much better job than holmes

Well mister NOOB WRANGLER, if you hate America so much, then leave, we're not keeping you here (unless you're in prison)... And if you're not in America, then SHUT UP and go wrangle some more noobs!!!

Iron Man and Batman have ugly and talentless leading ladies. Hulk is the lucky one.

Bruce Wayne can do better stuck with a joker in drag. Get Back Holmes for the sequel.

Def. looking forward to this summer. I think Iron Man and Hulk will do really well at the box office. But TDK will blow them both away. Have been waiting for this movie for two years, now we only have two months (almost anyway.) and jamest, i really agree with you, gyllenhall got it the best.

Maggie is wearing the same Showest dress. Yucky.

Maggie looks like a jacked up Margot Kidder while Paltrow looks like Heather Mills.
There is no credibility on this romance arcs.
Im only cheering on Tyler and Norton on the Hulk. I buy her as a superhero girlfriend.

Continuity works for me with Katie Holmes. She's really Rachel Dawes and she's lovely in the eyes.

OUT OF THE TRIO I ONLY LIKE LIV.

Hey jamest, I don't know if it makes you feel any better but he only co directed the Transporter....not that I had a problem with that movie anyway, but I figured I'd mention it.

JAMEST - "3 really great actresses in graphic novel based movies"

I think the term you're looking for is "comic book." There's no shame in using it.

am i the only who thinks the character of rachel dawes is kinda useless?

katie homles, maggie gyllenhaal, it doesn't really matter to me

i'm sure maggie will do a good job (and i still think holmes performance was way too criticized), it's just it seems that the character was only created by the studio for a romantic interest/more female audience members

which to me is stupid, b/c christian bale (and now eckhart) are quite the female draws

i understand the romantic angle is important, but there's only been a handful of women in batman's life, and it just seems kinda cliche/forced when a movie like BB/TDK has to do the romantic subplot like every other comic movie

The filmmakers in Batman should know women will flock to see Bale,Ledger and Eckhart(count in Oldman) never for Maggie. Even my guy friends are creeped out by Maggie. Its a given Maggie's two lovers would be Flass and the Joker. With Katie Holmes, you can easily swoon over Bruce Wayne falling for her and Harvey Dent.

I do believe Rachel Dawes does appear in the comics at some point. I may be mistaken but I seem to recall that the character had a comic basis rather than simply being created by the studio.

I think Rachel Dawes serves a very important purpose. What I'm hoping they're going to explore in this movie is Bruce Wayne's total isolation from anything resembling an actual life. Because he is Batman, he's never going to have a wife and raise kids or any of that normal stuff.

It just seems natural to take the character in that direction. And there needs to be a female lead to hang in front of Bruce's face to sort of drive the knife home and remind him of the things he'll never have.

Gyllenhaal is a fine actor, but damn, she got beat with an ugly stick. Billionaire Bruce Wayne wouldn't be caught dead with a butterface like her.

If you click on the link and look at the pics from the shoot above, Liv Tyler and Gweneth Paltrow totally look into eachother, like they might make out any second, and Maggie Gyllenhaal just looks like she doesnt want to be there.

IS IT ME...

...or does Liv Tyler looks unrecognizable in that USA Today photo? Has she had work done on her face or something???

Posted by: Kirk Hinton on April 21, 2008 at 14:15:48

Maggie has a strange look. She could pass for 25 or 50. She looks like her face is melting. The eyes droop, the cheeks hang, kind of a Victorian look.

Posted by: Liam on April 21, 2008 at 14:41:22

yeah i thought she kinda looked weird too.....really weird. I woulndt have known that was her otherwise

Posted by: jeremy on April 21, 2008 at 15:02:22

can't wait for the dark knight forget ironman, and the hulk, the summer belongs to batman.

Posted by: mannn... on April 21, 2008 at 15:18:39

LOTR was a masterpiece and really should not be even remotely compared to a comic book...just saying, Ms. Tyler, gotta show respect there.
Anyway, bring on the DK! And no, Rachel Dawes did not appear in any comics, she was totally made up for the movie, trust me.

Katie is ugly but man Maggie is a gorilla!

Posted by: gtrman on April 21, 2008 at 16:39:05

Does Maggie Gyllenhaal have that weird disease that makes you age prematurely, or the one that makes you look like you eat homeless underwear?

Liv Tyler, however, is as fine as they can possibly make a woman. Mmm-MM!!

Posted by: NUNYA on April 21, 2008 at 17:19:50

Man, Maggie is one fugly chick! I agree with the dude that said Bruce could score a hotter chick than that. I guess she's a good actress, but DAYUM! On the other hand, Liv Tyler looked great in those pics. I noticed something in those pics, though. Liv has put on some weight. Not a bad thing for me, just saying. She's always been hot in my opinion. Did I mention how fugly Maggie looks?
