EXCL: Sturgess on Spidey Musical, Fishburne on Silver Surfer

Most Americans first heard the name Jim Sturgess when he starred in Julie Taymor's musical movie Across the Universe, based on the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and when his director was doing interviews for that movie, she had expressed wanting to have Sturgess play Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson in the new Broadway musical she is doing with Bono and The Edge.

When ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a chance to talk to Sturgess in Las Vegas for his new blackjack crime caper 21, we had to ask him if there was any word or developments about the musical and his involvement with it.

"I haven't spoken to Julie about it but we did do a two-week workshop for it over in New York, and it was just a real chance to hang out with Julie again," the British actor told us. "I love Julie, she's like a mentor to me, and Evan's just a great friend, and the three of us are just so bound by the experience we had doing 'Across the Universe.' It was a lot of fun. I was just playing music with Bono and Edge from U2, singing songs about Spider-Man. The project is definitely happening. Julie will definitely make this piece of theater. Whether I'll be in it or not, I have no idea at this point."

At the same series of interviews, we asked Sturgess' co-star Laurence Fishburne if he heard anything about the proposed Silver Surfer prequel and whether he might once again provide the cosmic herald's voice in it, to which he replied: "I've heard that they are going to make a 'Silver Surfer' movie and I hope and pray to my lucky stars that they ask me to come back and do the voice again, I'd love to."

In the meantime, you can see Fishburne and the young actor, who Entertainment Weekly thought would make a great Superman in George Miller's Justice League movie--can you imagine that? one actor playing both Superman AND Spider-Man?--when they star in the crime drama 21, which opens on March 28.

I hope Jim Sturgess doesnt, get the part in the musical so he can just play Spidey in Spiderman 4. and second!! haha

Musicals suck arse. Spiderman has already been made lame in the public eye because Tobey Maguire put no effort into the last two spidey films, that and Sam Raimi just messed it all up, If spiderman is going to fight Venom we don't need anyone else in the movie.

Black man should not voice an intergalactic silver character unless they tamper with it.
I say get the voice from Ultimate Alliance Surfer.

oversoul, did you even see spiderman 2? the best one. yes 3 was bad but 2 was one of the best comic book movies ever. you're an idiot.

sturgess would actually make a great superman.

logan22-- Are you a racist?

Posted by: Shocker 9000 on March 17, 2008 at 01:09:48

Logan22 you seem to be a racist. A racist Silver Surfer fan... that doesn't make sense you know, you realize that Silver Surfer is a colored immigrant from outer space you know. You're Ignorant!

And this whole Spidey + Musical + Bono is starting to make me a bit ill.

If they go along the same brain damage mentality as Rise of the Silver Surfer, it won't matter anyway. Cuz I for one won't watch it. Aside from watching it to laugh my ass off like me and my brothers did with FF2.

Tim Story: "Here's how I see it...he's the Silver Surfer, intergalactic herald wielding the limitless power cosmic for the all powerfull force of nature that is the mighty Galactus. So you take away his surf board and he's powerless. Oh and get this....if you take away his board...wait for it....YOU GET HIS POWERS! Yeah I'm cool...that's me, pretty much. What do you think Stan?"

Stan Lee: "Hmm? Hey did I ever tell you about the day I created Mole Man? I was out in my backyard pulling weeds, when..."

Posted by: Logan22 on March 17, 2008 at 01:55:49

Ignorant? Racist? lol, wow. I'm half black half cuban, no room for that non-sense, and I love Morphius. But asking him to voice Surfer is like asking a white dude to play Blade, is that what you'll want?? didn't think so.

p.s. yall assume things way 2 quick

Posted by: Logan22 on March 17, 2008 at 01:57:46

I'm not a Surfer fan either, I just have respect for the character is all.

Posted by: fanger on March 17, 2008 at 02:03:34

i love the stan lee bit you did Phantom, oh yeah im 16th wait is it cool anymore to say what number you got to post a comment, wait it was for the first week that the internet was created, must not be cool anymore, then why are so many morrons still trying to be first, well who knows

Posted by: AmazingSpdy on March 17, 2008 at 02:08:43

Logan22, How is that the same as having someone white play Blade? The Surfer is neither white nor black. So it doesn't matter. What matters is what kind of presence the actor can bring to the character and Fishburne did a fantastic job. I don't see how you can assign a skin tone to a character that is for all intents and purposes, metal.

I'm looking forward to the Spider-Man musical. I got to interview the writer about month ago for my radio station. He said that he was a fan of the comics back in the day, and that Marvel is keeping a close eye on what he writes. He also said that Bono told him not to screw it up. I asked about the story line and the villains. He said that the first part would be based off the first two movies and the second part would be something new. He couldn't tell me who the villains were, just that there were going to be two that we have seen before, and one that we haven't, most likely referring to the movie villains.

Honestly, I think Fishburne's voice is distinct and has that demanding quality to it. Maybe they could alter it a bit, to make it sound more...mystical or what not. But the man's voice is unique.

Posted by: Logan22 on March 17, 2008 at 02:35:52

AmazingSpdy, yur right that skin tone doesn't matter, but only if Fishburne knew how to speak in a monotone manner, because that's the character. If you watch the original FF2 trailer in which Surfer speaks for the first time, That's the voice they should've used, it was perfect and fitting. But in a move to market the movie better they decided to go with well known Matrix actor who didn't really do much with his own voice in my opinion, and certainly not enough to replace whoever had done it originally.
And I'm not sure about this but i heard once a while ago that Surfer was indeed black on his own planet before Galactus transformed him, but I dont know if that's true, all that matters is he's suppose to sound like a no feeling world savior, not Morphius lol.

Posted by: Shocker 9000 on March 17, 2008 at 02:36:49

You're right Logan 22 having a black guy play Silver Surfer is like having a white guy play Blade. Why can't they get a Silver actor to play him?

Posted by: Michael on March 17, 2008 at 02:39:45

From Cowboy Curtis on Pee-Wee's Playhouse,to
the voice of THE SILVER SURFER.Yes,Laurence Fishburne did a great job as the voice of the
Silver Surfer, and I hope he gets the chance to
be the voice of the Surfer again.

Posted by: Alex on March 17, 2008 at 02:42:17

Ummmmm not too many people know this but wasn't Blade originally a white guy when he was first created and when he first appeared???? He did't become a black guy till later on when they made some changes to his story and changed up his character.

Anyways i loved the movie Across the Universe and i think he might be a rather good superman or spiderman but he would have to shape up his accent first and put on some muscle tone also.

But a musical spiderman is a totally bad idea. But i guess we're just going to have to wait and see now won't we?

I think Fishburne should come back to voice the Silver Surfer again.

Oh and Logan22.....yeah your ignorant and might be a racist in denial. And we don't really know if your really half black and half cuban because we don't see a picture of you on here now do we?

NOW WHO CAN'T WAIT FOR IRON MAN, INCREDIBLE HULK, DARK KNIGHT, and...Indiana Jones 4 AHHHHHHH i know i can't =D

Posted by: Shocker 9000 on March 17, 2008 at 02:47:11

U got the right idea Alex, it's suppose to be about the hype!

Posted by: crow on March 17, 2008 at 03:04:27

Hey Logan22 Black man voices Darth Vader (a white guy )and even though George Lucas never won an oscar the man is super rich because of it.Don't press the keys unless you have something to say worth sayinh or writing ,however you want to take it.I know it's your opinion but that doesn't mean I can't respond accordingly.Have a nice day buddy!!!!

Posted by: crow on March 17, 2008 at 03:06:31

Oh my bad....-g-g-g-g-g-g UNIT!!!!

Posted by: Logan22 on March 17, 2008 at 03:10:35

"Alex" - you give me a bad name cus ironically you have the same name as me. Please, dont ruin the name by judging people, I wouldn't make any claim about anyone on this site unless I've met them in person. Don't get carried away with the net.

crow- Darth Vader is well voiced and very iconic, can't mess with a trademark. who ever said I was against inaccurate matches in voicework? Some of the best voicework out there is done that way.

Posted by: A Sentient Being on March 17, 2008 at 03:35:06

I think Laurence Fishburne made great Silver Surfer. His voice was so excellent! Calm, almost indifferent, and yet you can feel emotions in it, just as Silver Surfer should be. Fishburne should return to voice Surfer again.
