Bryan Singer Talks Superman Sequel
Source:Rezzo
March 11, 2008
Empire Online talked to director Bryan Singer, who says that he has started working on Superman: Man of Steel.
"I'm just getting back with writers after the strike. We're just in the development phase. I'm starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it," he told the magazine.
About the negative reaction to the first film's focus on the drama instead of the action, Singer added, "The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film... And now that the characters are established, there's really an opportunity to up the threat levels."

The characters were already established. I think good ol Bryan was just a fanboy in the first film, now hes gotta get into director mode.

Not overly eager if he's still at the helm.

get off Richard Donner's nuts and make an original superman movie or go back to x-men and save the franchise!

please can we see some action in this one. the first one was sooooo lame. let's see him fight someone! please.

I really, really want Singer to do the next Superman, and yes, it needs to get more into the action AND the drama of what the characters can do. I loved Returns, but it did kind of drag on and it wasn't really anything new. But, now that the reestablishment is over (Returns was basically a remake), we can get on to new stories, new villains and a new movie.

GREAT News!
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (MI:3, Transformers, Star Trek) are apparently the writers of the film.
Between their action-driven stuff and Singer's mature directing style, we could get something great.

Just one punch, thats all I want, one punch directly in some ones face.

I really liked the last one. The next one needs to drop down the drama just a notch and add in some more action like Singer did in X-men 2. Just as long as Nic Cage or Tim Buron come anywhere near this movie and no giant siders.

*don't come anywhere

I was so offended by the first Superman movie lol. jk. I wasn't offended but Singer let me down on the first one. The directing was fine. It was the destruction of myth and story that caused my hatred to spurn. I am a fan of action but a bigger fan of Good Story. Anyway, I am more than willing to see him direct a new superman as long as its a NEW Superman, and not someone being told to act like Christopher Reeves walked out of the grave. GIVE us SUPERMAN 2008!!!! I believe in you Sir. Please dont Let us down again.

Yeah...lol... how about making a 'good' film instead of a nostalgic film?
How about that Mr. Singer?
He's full of excuses- if it was drama he was going for... couldn't still have been 'good'?

I love Superman. Christopher Reeve fantastic. Brandon Routh great replacement (better than Nic Cage), Superman Returns? Not a sequel. How can it be? I know Donner's final cut of Supes 2 was not released to theatres, but its the best version of what was released and it nulifies the stupid super kid. (And also why does Bryan singer crap repeatedly all over Cyclops? Yeah he didnt die in Supes, but good lord he doesnt even know the kid is not his!!! Or does he and I missed it?)
Anyway, yes Supes needed a re-vamp but not a straight up remake. And thats what Returns was, just flashier effects. Also Warner Bros., Lex has now become over kill, even Brainiac, bring in someone that will be refreshing and that we have not seen yet! I have faith that Singer will do good, but he's on a thin rope right now. C'mon Singer! (no pressure:)

SR was nothing more than a "Re-quel" of the Reeves Superman from late 70's. Same story new special effects. Watch both movies one after the other, and you will see it's just the same story.

Singer did the right thing by putting the franchise back on track laid forth by Richard Donner's version of the original movie. Build upon the classic.
However, I do hope that Singer dumps Kate Bosworth. Get some other actress that can "butch" the character like what Margot Kidder did.

Lol@ Hush..that would be like someone punching an egg. They need to explore his other powers. I want to see the super speed and take the shield off his chest and throw it at someone and cover them up like in the other Superman movie (Superman 2 I think). Please add Doomsday or Darkseid or something not another Lex Luther movie again please. Someone he can actually have a street fight with

come on guy's think about the big picture here. returns was a brilliant start to a new series of superman on film. let singer finish what he started. keep the faith.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Are you people nuts, X-men was not that good! All it was, was people walking in and out of rooms for two hours!!!!! Superman Returns was based off of story lines and themes set in motion in the seventies, and eighties!!!!!!! They do not matter today!!!! Singer sucks! Try something fresh, i think it worked for Batman!!!!!

I am glad Singer's back, although I don't think the characters needed to be established in "Superman Returns" because he played the same characters from Richard Donner's films.
But, since we're on the subject of establishing characters, forget Lex. He has done all he's gonna do in the films. You want a good movie? Bring back Zod. You want a rockin' ass flick? Bring in Metallo. But if you want a ***cin' epic? Darkseid!

now that the characters are established? What the ****...it's ****ing superman and lois lane. Everybody and there grandmother knows who they are. This is just his excuse because he was thinking people would be cool with a romantic piece.

Singer coming back can only hurt this film. There were so many elements that he got just plain wrong in Returns that the only way to correct them is for a hard restart. And really, that should have been done in the first place, anyway. Donner's film was good in its day, but it's time to move on and reinvigorate the mythos for the big screen from scratch.
In short, if Singer's attached to another Superman film, I'll be waiting for the basic cable debut to see it. There's nothing he can do in a sequel to correct the errors that Returns introduced into the "franchise," in my opinion.

"And now that the characters are established" wasn't that the point of making it take place after Superman 2, am I right?
Posted by: toddley89 on March 11, 2008 at 15:33:19
The original Superman movies were good, in and of themselves, but at the risk of being accused of blasphemy, they totally destroyed the Superman mythos. How about somebody trying to finally get it right? I'm so sick of writers thinking they need to stray from the comics to have a successful superhero movie franchise. Write new stories, but don't destroy the legend. Seriously. Somebody please do Superman right!
