Freddie Highmore has been signed for the title role in Imagi Studios' CG-animated motion picture AstroBoy, it was announced by producer Maryann Garger and director David Bowers.

The announcement of the casting of the award-winning actor as the voice of AstroBoy follows the release of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Highmore's latest starring vehicle.

Maryann Garger said: "I am very thrilled that Freddie has accepted this role. He is one of the most talented and acclaimed young actors today, and absolutely ideal to portray the iconic AstroBoy."

Commented David Bowers: "It's terrific that Freddie has agreed to play Astro. He's a remarkably skilled young actor, whose freshness and vitality make him perfect for the role. AstroBoy is a beloved superhero and has captured hearts around the globe for more than 50 years. I can't wait to see where Freddie takes him."

Just having turned 16 on Valentine's Day (February 14), Highmore has worked with celebrated directors such as Tim Burton, Ridley Scott and Luc Besson, and has starred alongside such top talent as Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman, Russell Crowe and Robin Williams, among others. Highmore's credits span live action and animation, including The Golden Compass, August Rush, Arthur and the Invisibles, A Good Year, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland.

Created by the "god of manga" Osamu Tezuka, AstroBoy, has enjoyed great acclaim and success throughout the world, with the original animated television series airing in the 1960s and followed by subsequent versions in the 1980s and again in 2003.

Set in futuristic Metro City, AstroBoy, is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.

AstroBoy will be released worldwide in 2009.

ASTRO BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is totally pointless to remake this. The Japanese could've just made an Astroboy movie and it would be so much better. CG animation is horrible.

CG animation is horrible when it is done unrealistically. This film will be a travesty.

Posted by: zhulok on February 28, 2008 at 14:27:32

Wait i thought this movie was going to be done in cartoony cgi like Robots, because if it is then it will be perfect because the astroboy world would be perfect for it.

It's not gonna look realistic have you guys not see some of the pics floating around the internet, Seriously look things up before saying something stupid.

I agree with tomputer.

But AstroBoy isn't a realistic looking character. What the hell are you people even going on about?

SSH, you should really think about shutting off this ****ing stupid comments system.

"YA! It be a realistice CG movie like BEOWOLF of Final Fantasy the spirits within. Me hate it, and also everything else. Me dumb."

CG animation is a techinque. It can work if done well. Please folks, enought with the sucking.

DIE AMERICAN ADAPTIONS DIE.

That's all I have to say about it.

Posted by: Vagabond on February 28, 2008 at 23:40:17

wow... i can see why ppl would rather not have a usa adaption but hmmm o well w/e im not gonna see this movie, catch it on HBO er somthing. over all... this movie and astro boy is no where near a big deal.

So, they aren't expecting this to be a successful franchise then?

I'd have thought two decades of 'The Simpsons' would have made casting agents and studios realise kids should be voiced not by kids but by women.

Wonderful news! This movie is shaping up to be quite interesting!

the cg shots i've seen were true to the original not realistic. can't really picture astros hair in the realistic spec, talk about heavy on the moose.

You know, all you people do is ***** and whine and ***** and whine about movies that havent come out yet. A majority of you people have probably said the same thing about Transformers and look how THAT turned out. Astroboy CG? Thats perfect you idiots! Computer animation for a story about a boy robot in a futuristic half-inhabited-by-robots world? Damn, get a life people. Be positive, you have NO IDEA how this movie will turn out. Relax and do something with your life other than complain about A CGI MOVIE! If you dont want to see it...DONT GO SEE IT! Atleast leave comments on how the film SHOULD be done if your to say anything. F***ing kids.

AstroBoy? Does anyone really care?

Posted by: anteros on March 2, 2008 at 00:19:20

Not people on this site populated by teenage American fanboys. Personally, I care.

It is not true that the Japanese can make this movie because American films are still in the forefront of CG films. True, the Japanese may have the technology, but their strength/passion is 2D animation. Plus, it's also about widening the fan base, so it's OK that few people on this site cares.

Although the kid clearly has talent, I cant' stand Freddie Highmore. He just...bugs me. Astroboy is something I far from care about, but if you look at Astroboy it self, then CG animation suits it pretty well. Astroboy doesn't look realistic like Akira. Astroboy is a style on it's own. And I think their choice for CG animation is a good one. I'll probably never watch this, just because I can't get into Astroboy, but if I was then I'd be stoked about their choice of filming.

I grew up with astro boy as a kid...look forward to it!

Highmore is 16. WTF!

Hello Emmm I Wondered If Any One Could Tell Me If They Know When And Where The Premiere Is For Astro Boy.

Posted by: Lynnebee on January 2, 2009 at 02:37:58

I think CG is a work of art. If anything, it takes a long time of hard work to make a movie. So please, appreciate the art.
