I HATE the new costume! - I hate that they hired Maggot Gyllenhall to play the Katie Holmes role - she's too geeky, creepy to susend my belief as Batman's love interest; who's friend got her that job?!Nolan must havee owed someine a favor.
I predict that the new film has too many strikes against it and will be a dissapointing flop. The only reason why Batman Begins was great was because it stuck to the BATMAN YEAR ONE SERIES frank miller wrote. The farther away fom that model you go the less the likely hood of success. Only one thing could posibly save this thing ...Heath Ledger's performance, maybe people will be curious about that. I am incredibly disapointed with Chris Noloan -- the movie look like crap - that new costue makes Batman look like he needs to strap on skate and play hockey - I find it laughable and I dont believe it will sell to te audience

First, I would like to respond to James – in a non-malicious, but constructive way – that Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes because Katie was uninterested in doing the sequel (I guess either Tom wouldn’t let her, or Mad Money was an offer she just couldn’t pass up). I haven’t seen enough of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s work to either love her or hate her, but I do feel that visually, she is a great replacement for Katie in the role of Rachel Dawes (and let’s be honest, any Batman fan knows that Batman cannot have a love interest, which leads me to be about 97% certain that Dawes will die in this film anyway). So let’s cut Maggie some slack and give her the benefit of the doubt until we see the movie.
Second, I am feigning to attribute ALL of Batman Begins’ success on the fact that it was modeled heavily after Frank Miller’s Year One arc. I did happen to like Year One, and thought that Batman Begins’ was a terrific way to reinvasion the franchise. The point of Batman Begins was to bring the myth of Batman into the real world, because that is the world in which he was born to be based.
Now James, I’ll be honest with you, when Batman Begins gave me the first look at the Tumbler, I was pretty disappointed: I liked the overall concept but felt that it needed a hood to look less exposed. But once I saw the movie, I realized the practicality of having that area exposed. But you see, that’s what Nolan’s new vision of Batman is all about: realism and practicality. Now, the batsuit from Batman Begins was pretty great (no complaints here) but the practicality of his new suit is that it adds to Batman’s mobility and that the plated aspect of it is supposed to serve as body armor. It took some getting used to for me though, so I sympathize with you, especially if you really are the true Batman fan that you seem to espouse being. I live and breathe Batman, as any number of my peers would attest and couldn’t be more thrilled that my favorite director (after seeing Memento and Following) is taking the reigns and re-inventing the franchise after Shumacker ****ed it up.
As far as the Joker, my admiration of Ledger’s prior performances is akin to my admiration of Maggie’s. That is to say that I never watched too many of Ledger’s films and never paid much attention to his acting ability. I was just as shocked as you probably were about the Maggie/Katie news when I heard that Ledger was chosen over Paul Bettany (whom I though had the perfect look for the part). But once I saw the first picture of the joker, and further down the line saw the trailer for TDK, I remembered to have faith in Nolan. Ledger (bless is soul) was so dedicated to the part of the Joker, that he sequestered himself in a hotel room for a month in order to perfect his performance. That’s dedication on his part and I have 100% faith in his performance.
My advice to you James, is to go into it with an open mind. Try to see the aesthetic choices Nolan chose to portray Batman and the world around him and admire him for that. Don’t be so critical of the trivial things (Gyllenhaal, the new batsuit) and pay closer mind to the overall themes of TDK and see what you think.

....how did it stick to batman year one series? did batman year one have bruce leaving gotham and being put in a prison? did year one have him being trained by the league of shadows? was ra's alghul in year one? was the scarecrow? was essen in the movie? did gordon take out his partner? no, they took many things from many books. simple truth being, this movie will probably be no different. they're borrowing from what many consider the greatest batman story ever told "the killing joke." and they're continuing to add upon their own mythos while still maintaining the spirit of the batman in the comics. i think this will better than begins, and i dig the new costume, it's far more tactical and i imagine will make for more mobility. i thought the fights in the batsuit in begins were till a little robotic because of how immobile it was...and gyllenhall is WAY better than katie holms.

I just think the suit's a little too "techno". All those squarish pads detract a bit from the overall design. I showed a pic of it to one of my friends and he didn't even see the bat emblem at first. Outside of that, I can't wait for this movie. What made Nolan's version great was it's well crafted story. The movie focused on Batman for once instead of the villains and did it in a more realistic manner (And by realistic I mean the world he inhabited looked real instead of like a gothic set or neon covered night club) and weaved, what, 5 or more bad guys throughout, without it coming off cluttered.

The Suit Rules
Chris Nolan Rules for saving Batman
Heath Ledger Rules
and Maggie Gyllenhall is sooooo much better/hotter then Katie"Strange Religion" Homles

The Dark Knight will be the best Batman movie by so far they can't compare to anyother, and will be the best comic book movie of the decade

Thank you Dyren!

It's so nice to see an intelligent posting that actually thinks about things, rather than simple, I hate, you suck, blah blah... before we've even seen the movie!
I think I appreciate most about what has been said is that this is a movie! It's not the comics...hence the reason they don't wear skin tight costumes. One of the things that has always bothered me about the batman movies is that Bat man could never turn his head without turning his whole body. The pose shown here could never be done before! And if the other movie taught us anything...it's that each decision made in the movie has a reason behind it! Everything down to the ears on his cowl! I imagine there will be a reason for the new suit...because the old one is in the trailers as well. In the same way we'll likely be given a reason for the bat-pod.
Bottom line...as fun as it is to write reviews based on what we "think" will happen, and what directors "must" have been thinking... let it play out! We all loved the first one...have a little faith in the guy to make another one just as good!

I echo the sentiments of making the movie look and feel like everything is pragmatic for Bats. All I gotta say is that if I did half the crap Batman does to get the job done, I'd strap up in kevlar plates head to toe too!

Chris Nolan is doing a great job with the evolution of the look, and I can't wait to see this movie!

Posted by: Saeos on February 23, 2008 at 16:34:27

I think my biggest problem here really is the new batsuit....it being pracitcal and everything is great but at the same time we are talking about a ficticious story and person and I think making things too practial can take away from the fantasy and mythos of Batman. Also in Begins, Batman was all about his look and theatrics so I don't know why they would go now with a look that was so tactical they could have at least had a suit that was tactical but also looked like it wasn't. Just say that underneath the outer layer of the suit which is the cool refined look that there is all this technology and stuff that makes it practical. I still think this movie will be amazing. I just would rather not see Batman riot gear.

I just hope the fight scenes are done a little better. Other than that this movie was breathtaking! Keep up the good work Nolan n'co!

I think it looks badass

Posted by: Robert on March 19, 2008 at 08:49:33

I agree with the negative on the suit! I like a sleeker look. The whole point is that Batman CAN get killed. And the yellow “target” on his chest gave something to shoot at. And the chest is the easiest part to move.

But I like Maggie. She is way better an actress then the last one.

you need to make a batman movie a the 2 face

Posted by: Gene Poole on March 28, 2008 at 15:13:02

I think Bale is the best Batman aside from Keaton. Both these guys put their own sense of darkness into the role which defines Batman. The suits in Batman one and returns were the same way reflecting off the style of the films they were as in the same as Batman Begins. Clooney's suit had nipples for some odd reason and just looked campy. This suit looks very efficient to the way this movie looks and if he's(batman) going to be riding a motorcyle(batpod) then he's going to need all the flexibility he can get. I like it. I also think Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart are great cast decisions...

What's the big deal? I saw that picture months ago.

Posted by: Apexx on March 29, 2008 at 02:14:45

This Batman is truly The Dark Knight. Look, I'm a Marvel zombie but I know that this armored Batman has been depicted in comics before and he's still the Batman we know and love. The man makes the suit, and Bale makes Batman. My only concern: how is this Batman going to do in hand-to-hand combat? Looks like this suit would rob him of some mobility.

But I guess with the Joker firing rocket launchers and blowing up buildings you'd need a little added protection.

Ok what we like about comicbook based movies of today starting at the time of Spiderman is the fact they stick to the story BUT say hey maybe that could happen in Batman we thought hey he's got on kevlar how'd he get his suit made of it how does he glide with his cape i admit if we love any hero even if we know they're fake and what they do is fake and we'd still go see the movie but directors are trying to make it real to make you believe or prove to you some stuff can either actually exist and or we think it can like we wished...or tryed to make happen you ever have your dad explain why stuff didn't work before mythbusters when it came to superhero movies now directors make mythbusters have to test myths and make your dad scratch his head so sticking to the story and realism sells i like it too. so traditionallity and practicality are powerful weapons Alfred qoute me on that one

the new dark knight movie WILL be kickass (much in part just because of a new joker and one of ledgers last movies). the only thing that may not be so great is the new batsuit. i liked the older one because it was much simpler, unlike the 200 seperate pieces from this new one (i mean, even the forearm spikes shoot out now? c'mon). and im glad katie holmes isnt in the new one because the hideousness of katie holmes will haunt my dreams forever.

Posted by: bartman on April 13, 2008 at 19:07:44

that is the coolest most robotic batman suit ever! duhhhhhhhh

Posted by: darkbat on April 14, 2008 at 00:37:40

after some time of seeing the new suit i've decided i like it. the only problem i have with is maybe the bat symbol is too small. other than that i think its great. plus i've heard the cowl has a new gadget inside and believe me when i say its going to be cool if true.
this will be the greatest film ever!!!

Posted by: fernmeister on April 18, 2008 at 14:07:55

I love the new suits too, but going back to basics keeps us focused on the character. Just take a look at the short film Dead End. Basic costume a la Alex Ross. Just the Spandex, cowl, cape and utility belt are enough to fight Alien and Predators in one night!

Dyren, I believe we might be twins or think on the same wavelength. Thank you, brother.
