Stellan Skarsgård Joins Thor Cast

Stellan Skarsgård has revealed to TT Spektra that he will have a role in Marvel Studios' Thor movie. Swedish site Ystads Allehanda reported on the casting in Swedish, but here is a rough translation:
Stellan Skarsgård is ready for a role in action movie "Thor."
Everything is still secret about the project and Skarsgård can not reveal what role he will play.
"They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy," said Stellan Skarsgård to TT spectra.
Some time ago it was said that Stellan Skarsgård's son, Alexander Skarsgård, was on his way to the title role in "Thor." In the end however, it became Chris Hemsworth, known for "Star Trek," who got the job.
Paramount is eying a May 20, 2011 release for Thor. Kenneth Branagh will direct the comic book adaptation, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Samuel L. Jackson.
The epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

I'll admit I'm not the biggest Thor fan but this movie could really be amazing. It could be Lord of the Rings superhero style. If done right Marvel could be looking at something that would make more money then even Spider-Man. There are plenty of War Craft type nerds out there that eat this stuff up.

Alexander Skarsgård would've been a good Thor

Oooo thats ironic. Ya maybe he will play Odin. That's so ironic if it's true even if they got Alexander to play Thor eh?

This is going to rule!!! (If done right) Look at the hype for Solomon Kane....you see how that turned out.

This movie is shaping up to be something straight out of PBS' Masterpiece Theater. I hope they don't make it too artsy-fartsy and stay true to the Thor comic book elements. That being said, this cast is shaping up to be a strong one. I just hope the guy they got as Thor can hold up a film on his own. And I hope we get Fabio as a cameo as Thor from the future. That would seriously make my life complete. Fabio... *cries*

I still wish Alexander Skarsgard was cast as Thor.

He should be Odin, but this just makes me wish they'd gone for Alexander as well.
Guess they're saving him for Captain America. That's why he's lost weight on True Blood, to play skinny pre-serum Steve. Wait and see.

I don't now about you but arnet the asgard apart of the StarGate sg-1 and the SGA
Posted by: Alex on October 5, 2009 at 05:29:41
Charlie - if you saw the episode thwere the SG asgard first appeared, you'd have seen that the reason for that is they were the ones in that series who had posed as the Norse Gods originally.
I'm thinking Odin here personally. Also, while Brian Blessed does have an obvious part in this film, I'd personally suggest him for Volstagg.

Oh, and finally a Scandinavian in a movie about NORSE gods. :)
Looking forward to this!

This movie will be Marvel`s BEST it will be a Huge Epic......

AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! Just when I was beginning to make peace with the fact that Alexander Skarsgard, the OBVIOUS choice to play Thor, was passed over, they throw this our faces. Stellan is a great actor, but does Branagh realize that this will only emphasize his mistake in miscasting Thor? Why doesn't he just track Alexander down and kick him in the nuts while he's at it? I mean, nothing against Hemsworth, but he's far from ideal for the role.
Hmmm...come to think of it, Thor hasn't started filming yet. I guess it wouldn't be too late for an unfortunate "accident" to befall Hemsworth, forcing Branagh to go with the correct choice. Anyone know where Hemsworth can be found?

FYI Skarsgard and Asgard are pronounced the same, ie: ...goard.
so all of you who pronounces it ...aard are wrong!

I got excited when I saw Skarsgard, but it's the wrong one.
Oh, and you're a friggin' idiot if you think anyone but Brian Blessed for Odin. He will absolutely own that role.

Looks like the same casting director for Hercules the TV Series from the 90s also cast THOR for this movie.
Ah well I guess they can take liberties like changing a massively jacked Norse God into a tiny child.
Hell it worked well when they cast Routh as Superman right?

Brian Blessed is set to play Odin, so I have no idea who Skarsgård could be playing.
