Marvel Studios announced today that Academy AwardŽ nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie Thor. In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce Thor. Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Portman will next be seen starring in Jim Sheridan's Brothers opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. She recently wrapped production on Hesher, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and executive produced by her production company handsomecharlie films, and Don Roos' Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, which also she executive produced. In 2004, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as an Academy Award nomination in the same category for Closer. She also earned critical acclaim for her role in Garden State and is most well known for her role as Queen Padme Amidala in the "Star Wars" trilogy. Other film credits include The Other Boleyn Girl, V For Vendetta, Cold Mountain, Anywhere But Here, Heat, Beautiful Girls, and The Professional.
Thor is one of a continuing slate of films being produced by Marvel Studios based on the Marvel characters, including Iron Man 2 on May 7, 2010, The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011, and The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Cool...I think she'll be fine...if George Lucas isn't writing Thor...

This is great news. I love Natalie Portman in everything but Star Wars.
And this is something of a double dose of news... unless Jane Foster is only making a small appearance at the end, we may be seeing half of Asgard, half of Midgard.
Excellent.
Now they just need Hugh Laurie for Donald Blake :P

Jane Foster becomes Thordis it's pretty much a woman version of Thor, she posseses the same habilities as Thor, It'' be cool to see Natalie Portman pull this character off.

thankfully marvel continues to go for good actors most of the time. still think the skarsgaard guy from true blood would have been a perfect thor.
i still can't believe dc warner cast ryan reynolds for green lantern. i guess as long as lantern never gets angry, sad or emotional in any way, and instead, just cracks jokes and winks to the camera reynolds will be a fine choice.

Great news. Now let's get Sif cast! :D

This seems to suggest , by casting her as Jane Foster, that it contradicts the notion that the script says Thor is earth bound only later in the movie. I mean, I assume they wouldn't just use someone of Portman's caliber at just towards the end.
just guessing by the announcement.

Well so far I like the plot of the movie and Natalie is a good actress this will be a good set up for Ultimate Avengers people are forgeting Sam Jackson is playing Nick Fury so, HULK will be the First fight for them, and if you notice in Incredible Hulk while betty and Hulk where inside the small cave the Thunder Storm look like a battle...

She's cool. I'm more interested to know who's gonna be Loki?

OOPS!!! Tom Hiddleston will play Loki. It's in the article!!! Reading is fundamental.

It's one thing that Rick Jones wasn't involved in The Incredible Hulk or Donald Blake not being involved in Thor. But Kevin Feige DOESN'T EVEN EXPLAIN WHY. Doesn't the fans deserve to know why they're not involved? What is this, a f-cking guessing game? Is Kevin Feige just aiming to piss people off?

HOT! HOT! HOT! DAMN SHE'S HOT!

Maybe she'll play Sif as well. I'm expecting that Hemsworth will play both Thor and Blake so maybe that's how they'll work it out.

X-K!D : I know she became Thordis in a What If comic, but I don't recall her becoming her in the regular Thor comics. Which issue was that?
Posted by: Ogre on July 13, 2009 at 14:09:21
Why would you expect the same actor to play Thor AND Donald Blake? One is a 6'6" Norse God of Thunder, and one is a crippled doctor of average build. Christ, the comments on here astound me sometimes.

Impressive cast addition. Branagh'll knock this out of the park.
Side not: I'd tackle a whale just to get up in her pants.
