Marvel's Joe Quesada on Iron Man 2 & Thor
June 18, 2009
Comic Book Resources continues their "Cup 'O Joe" series of interviews with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada with an edition dedicated to Quesada's involvement with the next two movies on Marvel Studios' slate, Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 and Kenneth Branagh's Thor.
Quesada is grilled by Jonah Weiland and Kiel Phegley specifically about the meetings held by the Marvel Creative Committee to decide on the direction of the movies and how they'll tie into Marvel Comics' publishing schedule.
Below is a taster, and then you can read the full interview with Quesada over on Comic Book Resources:
We had one big creative meeting with the Marvel Creative Committee, which now works on all of our movies and I have the honor to be a part of. We sat with Kenneth and discussed the "Thor" movie and the overarching story of what that's going to be, just to give our input before anything was put down to paper by screenwriters.
And it was one of the highlights of my time here at Marvel because not only did Branagh sit there and give you the story beat for beat, he and [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige formed a great team. It was performance art. Kevin would give us the establishment of the shot and the situation: "Here we are. We're in (take your pick of location). And here's Odin and he’s coming up to (pick a character)." And then Kenneth would come in and give you the color commentary. "Odin has an air of majesty to him" and he'd act out the Odin part or the Thor part. So we sat there and literally got a three-hour one-man show from Kenneth Branagh. It was fantastic. People pay a lot of money for that kind of performance by one of the world’s greatest living actors.

I like KB and I like(d) the Thor comics but I have a hard time seeing this character fit into the realistic world of Iron Man. Who knows, I thought Iron Man would be terrible and I was certainly proved wrong on that one.

Am super stoked that Marvel got Branagh for this film. Thor is potentially a tough sell, especially compared to the more realistic, Iron Man level heroes, and such an experienced Shakesperian actor/director can only be a good thing.
BRIAN BLESSED FOR ODIN!!! IT'S PERFECT!!!

I have hope that the Marvel creative committee will make note worthy films and appease those of us that have supported these charcters and made it possible for them to come to life.
do not disappoint Marvel (especially w/ Captain America)

I'd quite like Branagh to play Donald Blake, or maybe even Odin himself... If he gained some weight and let his age show perhaps?
That said he'd be a pretty good Fandral.

Thor is going to be friggin' sweet. The only thing that could be an improvement would've been the casting of Skarsgard.
I would've loved to see that one-man rendition of the film. Branagh is a great actor. If there's a god in the sky who loves me, they filmed it and will include at least some of it on the dvd features.

i hope they give thor his ultimate look. his 616 look is so campy its horrible. brng on the beard and the modern mjolnir. if they keep a ultimates look and style to the movie, this could work perfectly with iron man and hulk.

They couldn't have gotten a better director for Thor. I was sceptical of a Thor movie, esspeacially since all these movies need to tie in together for the Avengers movie. But Branagh is the right man for the job if its going to work at all.
Now we can all just start holding our breath for the day that Marvel Studios get the rights to all their other characters back. IE: X-Men, Daredevil, Spiderman (though I love Sam Raimi's movies...other than 3). I want an X-Men reboot. (Fat chance, I know.)

Moorish you poor fool. You just called Iron Man realistic. I loved the film, but this is a flick about a guy flying around in a suit of armor.

Seriously interested in this movie, in the same way I'm NOT interested in TRANSFORMERS 2. Branagh is a great choice to direct and even act in. Sounds like he's getting into, or has been into, the character.

This is brill. Great drop of info, and a brill vibe is being felt about Thor. I'm glad. Finally, the last of my three favourite superheroes are getting some justice (Daredevil - God bless the Director's Cut, and The Incredible Hulk - it had a bit of everything good with Hulk!)
Just bring home a victory and all's well!

I want to rage and kick something whenever I hear Joe Q's name. The man's a hack. Under his leadership they've ruined several things. One More Day/Brand New Day sound familiar? How about Red Hulk killing the Hulk, Terrax, taking out the Surfer, Thor, dozen other people? How about no cigars for Wolverine or Nick Fury because killing is okay for the kiddies to see but not smoking? How about turning Electro g-a-y? As editor-in-chief he could stop any of the crap, but doesn't, and in fact was the driving force in ruining Spidey. Whatever good he might have done for the company got tossed out the window over the last couple of years for a lotta folks.

Kenneth Branagh would indeed make a great Fandral, if he could somehow de-age about fifteen to twenty years. He's a great actor, and I love his work, but he's getting a bit old to play a slow-aging Norse god that is in the prime of his life. I love the Thor comics, except for this most recent run (JMS is one of my favorite writers, too), and think the movie will be fantastic with him at the helm. I could see him playing Heimdall, maybe. He might make a decent Odin, but he doesn't have the imposing physique. I have high hopes for this movie with him as director.
