Marvel Studios announced today that Tom Hiddleston has been cast to play the villain Loki in the studio's highly anticipated movie Thor. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the U.S. on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Thor reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov's "Ivanov." The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries "Wallander."
Hiddleston's credits also include "Othello," in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's "The Gathering Storm."
In 2008, Hiddleston was nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer – for his role in "Othello," and for his role in "Cymbeline." He won the award for the latter.

He's a horrible actor, IMO. Rather would see Dennis Leary in the role.

ENOUGH WITH THE CASTING ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GIVE US A TRAILER ALREADY!
Posted by: Bill on May 18, 2009 at 15:10:02
Uh, they kinda have to shoot the movie first before they can have a trailer.
Posted by: Kaizer on May 18, 2009 at 15:10:54
Hahaha! Trailer? You know they haven't even started shooting, right? Hence the casting announcements?

I've never heard of the guy, but I gotta say just looking at the guys face I thought it was a good fit. Can't say from personal experience if he's a great actor or a lousy one, but I trust Branaugh.
I know, they should do a trailer in Lego just to get it out there.

now that they have their central characters on board....what becomes of the supporting cast?
Odin, lady Sif, balder, fandrel, volstagg and the many others of course the plot and storyline will inject them approprietly...I hope. But here's the million dollar question will they be adorning their comic book uniforms, or will they be interpreted in another fashion altogether...which style would you prefer? Myself personally I rather have him in his comicbook uniform! His new look doesn't appeal to me

I just wanted to see how many people would take that seriously. I see that phrase a lot in the Iron Man news articles so I was just being satirical.
But for reals they should just have him record a line and play it over a black screen and boom there's your teaser.

These two guys so far are pretty babyfaced. They must be going for that unhampered, untouched, pristine, Godlike look or something. It's hard to comment on thier talent, beings how i've never seen them act, but THOR has potental... i hope

it would also be funny if there was an adventures in babysitting ref. in the movie.
ahh the 80's

Dude WTF let me guess you want Vin Diesel to play Captain America as well.

With Branaugh directing (good choice by the way) I see THOR being really good....not only with action, but acting too. I think we will enjoy this movie very much.
I also see Thor's look to be a meld of classic thor and ultimate thor. I think Russel Crow' s "Gladiator" look or a Lord of the Rings "Rohan" look...by that I mean.....wicked helmet, black leather, with armored peices throughout, and a sick looking thunder god hammer miljnor. I don't know if the cape will be kept on Thor for long, but I do see it making an appearance. I hope he has a beard too.
anyways looking forward to THOR, and Captain America too.
We are getting that much closer to Avengers! yaaa!

Interesting casting, I have faith that hte director and Marvel Studio heads know what they're doing so I'm sure they picked him with just cause.
It's all a bit exciting, looking forward to production already.

I'm glad they're treating this film seriously by casting serious actors even though they are relatively unknown. My greatest fear was that they were going to cast someone like Triple H or Hulk Hogan or someone silly like that.

I don't understand how Thor fits into the world of the avengers. I realize that the concept of mutants, super heroes, and genetic experiments gone wrong are far fetched, but I feel that the introduction of Gods confuses the basis for the world within Marvel comics. THe Hulk, Cap., Iron Man, etc. can all be woven together into one continuous story with ease, but when the god of mischief and the son of Zeus come into play it blurs the lines.
Maybe I'm just not a Thor fan, and I know that he was an original avenger, but how can they introduce living gods into an otherwise believable (ok, not believable but you get what I'm saying) universe.

This guy has the PERFECT face for Loki. I"m stoked they're finally getting the ball rolling. As 4 the Thunder God's costume, i think they should go with the look he returned with in the comics last year. Beard or no Beard, Thor will look badass. I haven't seen any of Branagh's work, but i hear good things.
