UPDATE: Has Chris Hemsworth Been Cast as Thor?
Source:Deadline Hollywood Daily
May 17, 2009

Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh have found their Thor and it's Chris Hemsworth, who millions have now seen playing George Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. At the same time, the 25-year-old Australian actor, who got his start on the popular local television show "Home and Away," is also reported to play the lead in MGM's remake of Red Dawn, taking over the role of Jed Eckert, originally played by Patrick Swayze. (A MGM representative has confirmed with CS that Hemsworth will be playing the role in Dan Bradley's Red Dawn.)

As has been standard, there is no comment or confirmation from Marvel Studios, but one expects if it is true, it will be confirmed by Monday. UPDATE: Variety confirms that Hemsworth is in final negotiations for the role of Thor, and Nikki says that Marvel will be releasing a press release announcing the casting, as well as other casting for the movie sometime tonight.

You can read Nikki's report on how and why Hemsworth got the role (and who he was in competition with) over on Deadline Hollywood Daily and then let us know what you think of this casting below.

Thor is scheduled to open on May 20, 2011, while Red Dawn is scheduled for release on September 24, 2010.

He looks too young. And not nearly big enough.

Like the pick - you need an unknown for this part, give the kid a chance....

I could see him as Thor. Why not?

Posted by: Snorkllz on May 16, 2009 at 18:09:54

He was great in star trek.. but Id have to agree with DAC... he seems a bit young

I was hoping they went with Kevin Mckidd

cool !... He was good for the 5 minutes i saw him in star trek, lol. Never saw Home and Away though.

Dunno what to say, but at least they got their thor...

how is he not big enough dude is 6'3 and he is bulky looking

hearing him talk he might of been better captain America even tho he is Australian LOL

I hope he beefs up more. I'm thinking they could have gotten a wrestler with some acting acting ability to play the part....and they could have saved on budget costs too.

Posted by: the_ddb on May 16, 2009 at 18:15:28

why does he need to be big? he has god like strength...why does he need to be big? the practicality of having real people try have comic physiques for me totally ruins the drama. i wouldn't be able to take it seriously. i think this dudes a good choice..would've like viggo but this guy will do

Posted by: nelson on May 16, 2009 at 18:15:35

he is an unknown and just starting out in the states he wont cost much at all

This guy s ucks... then agaian Star Trek s ucked. Karl Urban's a better choice, he's got the chops baby!

coo

Posted by: James on May 16, 2009 at 18:26:32

He'd be a better Captain America.

Don't let Home And Away knock him back; it's a terrible show.
He was great as George Kirk. I loved his scenes.
As for Thor? I'd want him to bulk up a bit, but I could totally see him as Donald Blake.

Also, Isle Fisher started on Home And Away.

Posted by: MJK on May 16, 2009 at 18:28:46

I just don't see him as Thor. He would have been better cast as Cap.

Posted by: T on May 16, 2009 at 18:29:24

Dang why couldn't it be Kevin Durand?

Posted by: GR1 on May 16, 2009 at 18:33:01

Thor is scheduled to open on May 20, 1011.

Seems like the movie has been out a while? ;)

Posted by: Jeff on May 16, 2009 at 18:33:28

Good call on the Captain America, he could've worked there as well. Again, I like the choice.

Posted by: dare angel on May 16, 2009 at 18:35:00

Matthew McConaughey for captain america...right??
