Peterson Talks Smallville: Absolute Justice
November 25, 2009
As previously mentioned, the two-hour "Smallville: Absolute Justice" TV movie is coming to The CW on January 22, and executive producer Brian Peterson talked to TV Guide about the event that combines two episodes. Here's an excerpt:
How do you introduce them?
We wanted to make their entrance into the series relevant, so they show up in a time when our fledgling League, that has not named itself or coalesced into anything, is having a few growing pains. So they are coming in to teach all of our heroes a lesson about family and leadership from the mistakes of their own past.
They’re from the future?
They are actually from the past. When we meet them they have been underground and are an older generation of heroes that Clark and Chloe and our generation of heroes didn’t even know existed. They kind of come out of the woodwork and there are a few sparks between our characters and the JSA members at the beginning of the [story].

Man, Smallville just keeps getting better and better, true they arent going 100% with the origins, but this is an awesome new perspective on the man of steel. I am lovin it. I feel sorry for those ex-mallville watchers who stopped watching 4 years ago, it is now closer to the comics then ever before.

Mik-El.
So you're saying it would be worth getting and starting to watch from the beginning?
It will get better and better? :)
Posted by: Ghostwise on November 25, 2009 at 10:52:28
@Leo
Only after it gets worse...then better.....then worse again only to get mildly better and watchable. It's pretty good nowadays though. Seems a lot darker and Supes has matured a bit. Sonofa***** should be Superman already though. He's in his mid 30's in real life and mid 20's in the show lol.

"They’re from the future?"
Don't you love it when journalists do their research?
The Legion of Super-Heroes are from the future. The JSA are from the past. I would think someone asking specifically about them would look up Wikipedia before asking questions.

Sounds cool! But I thought the episodes was supposed to air on February 5.
Posted by: ShadowVoyd on November 25, 2009 at 11:33:15
Actually D-Rod, it is, for all intents and purposes, it kind of is (at least as much as any "two hour event" from any other series could be called one). The titles "Society" and "Legends" were dropped first, then they opted to cut the title sequence from the second hour altogether, essentially airing it as an unbroken two hour episode (which I like, as that allows for an extra couple of minutes of actual show).
As it falls out of the "two hour season premiere" or "finale" into the midseason, I can kind of see the TV movie moniker.

Jan 22? I thought it was moved to Feb 5. Did they change it again?
Posted by: ShadowVoyd on November 25, 2009 at 11:35:26
Cos, apparently on top of the zero homework the interviewer did on the subject of the episodes, there was no homework done to confirm any of the updated info on the air date. It is February 5th.
World class work there, TV Guide Magazine.

Will Hawkman get his Nth metal equipment from Thanagar or a meteor? Is he an archeologist and the reincarnation of an Egyptian prince? Will Alan Scott get his lantern from the Green Lantern Corps or the Starheart? Or a meteor...
Will Doctor Fate get his powers from his helmet?
Or will Pam Grier's Amanda Waller be the one who created all of these superheroes?
Don't know why anyone could be excited about any of this. Everything is going to be neutered because of how compressed the tv movie will be. It won't have time to explain everyone's origin, and will likely just offhandedly make some dumb reference to a different incarnation of the character, trying to sound clever, but only annoying the fans. Who's to say that Alan Scott will even be the Green Lantern?
By the way, I'm not a fan of the majority of the DC universe, especially with how often something is retconned. I speak as an unbiased representative OF the fans who love all these characters.
None of these cameos are going to be "relevant". They may even be pitches for their own tv series, but likely, they'll pop in, pop out, and the characters will have little to none back-story. Some things don't translate well, even for tv, which is the usual rationale producers provide as to why their interpretation sucks. That being the case, why don't they stick with what DOES work, as obviously they have no problem mixing things up for that very reason...
I'm still wondering why this show is called "Smallville".

all good to me!
Posted by: kri-el on November 25, 2009 at 12:20:34
It airs February 5th not January 22nd.
@Shayera the show is called Smallville because that's where it all started. And it is after all Lois's nickname for Clark.

For those of you complaining that the episode won't be this or that...just watch the damn 2 hour special when it comes out and then judge! Of course it's not going to be like the comics but who the hell cares. The show is what it is, just enjoy it and if you don't like it, don't watch it!!! If you really are a comic book fan you should appreciate the fact that Smallville is still on the air... Try tuning into VHI and MTV, gawd those reality shows are horrible!!! I'd take a f**** version of JSA any day over that garbage!!! And one last thing, when there are no costumes, you complain, when there are costumes you still complain! What is it going to be!!!!!
Posted by: mdschwartz31 on November 25, 2009 at 12:38:16
I'm not worried about their background. If all they say is that they're a group from the past and don't explain where or how their powers came to be... does it really matter? Is it not good enough to know they just are? Because it is after all about the JSA not the individuals of the group. If they were strong enough to stand alone, would they be in a group? It would take too long to intoduce everyone in the extended characture.
Posted by: Shayera on November 25, 2009 at 12:46:57
@kri-el
No, it all started on Krypton. Smallville was the title of the show because it was meant to highlight Clark's childhood and discovery of his powers, all of which took place in Smallville, the town he was brought up in. The show has since moved on to Metropolis, and to keep "Smallville" relevant, Lois is to call Clark "Smallville". The show is not about Clark anymore, and to keep interest, the producers have introduced various superhero cameos, some of which, are their first live-action appearances. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that Ollie has become a more interesting character than Clark on the show.
In order to peak interest in the show, they have decided to bring in the Justice Society. This is not to be mistaken for the Justice LEAGUE, which came about later on when Superman was a full-fledged superhero (well, actually, he's always been one, but in the interest of this show, he hasn't yet).
The show does not have the budget to make these cameos into supporting roles like Green Arrow, or even the de-powered Martian Manhunter (who, without his powers, somehow looks completely human). These cameos will remain cameos, and some of the characters likely will only be featured in this tv movie only.

Leo:
I started watching in Season Four, the season that introduced Lois and the first of what would become several future Justice League members. I've since gone back and seen the previous seasons, but I wouldn't say they're absolutely necessary. The first three seasons are the ones that are most like a teen drama Season Four has a bit of it left, but it's Season Four when the show begins to grow up.
What I'm saying is, if you're looking to pick up on Smallville when it starts to get good, I'd recommend starting with the fourth season. But that's me. The series does steadily improve as it goes on, however.

@eejo
Why settle for less? As for the costumes, I'm all for them. The reason why Hawkman's doesn't work here is because it's in a fictional setting that has not yet embraced costumed heroes. You go out on the street today looking like that and you will be laughed at, and in most parts of the world, you will either be arrested or beaten up. There has not been a lead-up to these costumed characters. Everyone is going to love Sandman because his new costume in the comics fits PERFECTLY on Smallville.
Like I said, I'm all for the costumes. The trouble is, no one has been wearing them, so now, they look ridiculous.
@mdschwartz31
I'm not worried about their background either. I don't even like these characters. But they are more than cardboard cut-outs. If you've been watching Smallville, you'll remember the episode that I actually thought was pretty cool... the one that explains the origin of Green Arrow. It's completely possible to do that with other characters, but that isn't on the agenda. The agenda is quite similar to Transformers. Bring in a bunch of colorful brand-name characters to draw in the viewers who have been bored with the average episode and tv show.
The trouble is the content hasn't changed. These will still be two-dimensional characters who will have little impact on the show itself.
Posted by: Smallville Seasons for 9.99 on November 25, 2009 at 13:10:12
Best Buy is going to have the smallville seasons for 9.99 (1-8) on Black Friday, not a bad deal at all. I have been watching since the beginning, There were a couple of seasons where I was really grinding my teeth, but ever since they got rid of Lex and Lana and moved to Metropolis things have been better. Yes they dropped the ball on some stuff, like Doomsday (weak episode to cap a storyline that ran a whole season, why bother) and I personally never liked the casting for Lois, but overall the last couple seasons have been interesting to watch, making it worth whiled especially considering no other Channel has got the cajones to do a superhero tv show. The JSA episode will probably interesting also, lets be happy that we get a chance to see them conceptualized on film, no one else is doing it. I doubt it will perfect, true, or provide anywhere near the needed depth, but to do that you would need a JSA TV show, hmmmm!!!
Posted by: mdschwartz31 on November 25, 2009 at 13:12:31
I'm not too familiar with any of the JSA either, except Hawkman and I know he other names at least. Besides Sups and Bats, I'm not much of a DCer.
Their impact still remains to be seen. But from the full interview, it seems as though there may be a little more impact to the show, then say Impulse. I personally forget about him until they bring him into another show, just like Cyborg or even Auquaman. They've only been in a couple shows but really haven't done anything noteworthy in the show.
With Green Arrow, he's part of the show and a good cog... this year. Last season seemed to be a bit of a waste and also the begining of this season. But after his wake-up call, he's been pretty good.

@Leo:
You can start watching from Season 8, which will be on-sale for $10 at Best Buy on Black Friday, but if you want backstory and origin stories, you really need Seasons 1 to 7 (also $10 each on Friday at Best Buy).
Season 1 to 7 were the Smallville years, and about the boy becoming a man, moving from simple town life and high school into the big city.
Season 8 and 9 are about the man becoming Superman, and are set in Metropolis, where he's currently training via tasks Jor-El sets him, and becoming a vigilante before going public.
Season 10 will be about Superman, or the very final stage of his transformation.
'Smallville' was originally meant to just be a 5-season show, supposedly ending with him training in the fortress, but the network and studio were so happy with it, it just continued and has become its own DC universe.
In the SV universe, Clark doesn't train in solitude for 7 years, he trains whilst being a public superhero (in training), and Smallville's Superman will be younger (around 25) than the usual 30+ character depicted in the comics.

Dillan
- that was a nice review, and although Smallville's Superman will be younger, the actor is in his 30's and since season 8 they have tried to make him look his age now so it's ok to have him as Superman now.After the ending of the Smallville series wouldn't it be nice if it's continued in a Justice League series or movies?(and there WITH Martian Manhunter, Batman, Wonder Woman , The Flash(Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, Black Canary...)
Posted by: Superboy prime on November 25, 2009 at 15:00:31
HEHEHEHE...some sparks fly at the begining...the old dogs teach a lesson to newbees? Man, hope Alan Scott show Clarky Wellyn' how to be a man....
Smallville needs to become Metropolis. Clarky needs to become a man. That or do mexican-style soap opera. At least is funnier JEJEJE
