McTeigue on Possibly Taking on Superman
Source:FirstShowing.net

FirstShowing.net caught up with director James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, upcoming Ninja Assassin) and asked about him possibly taking on the next Superman film.

"Maybe some truth to... I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment," McTeigue said. "I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together."

And if he was to take on the project, what could we expect? You can read more of what he had to say here.

Well, I haven't seen Ninja Assassin yet, but I must admit it looks pretty BA! V for Vendetta was.... mediocre at best IMO, it's no wonder they are handling the Superman property so carefully... Superman Returns completely tanked, Smallville has become nothing more than a teen soap, and the public isn't exactly clamoring for another Superman movie at the moment. I have no clue who would be best for this movie, but they better do a good job! McTeigue is much better suited than Singer IMO, so that's at least a good start.

When they do make a new Superman movie i hope they get someone who understands that the character is the the beacon of light in the dark.Much like Nolan has a grip on Batman as a character and also the city of Gotham and its supporting characters thats what made those movies good.It shouldnt be like that Wolverine crap where they use the character n the movie but it never really captures who are what he really is.Please please dont mess this up i cant wait twenty more years for them to reboot a reboot.O yeah all the talk about not doing a origin is bull so far Superman:secret origin is promising and guess what its telling a story we already know and John Hamm should get the role he would be more believable than Hartnett.

I want new Superman so bad, but if its going to be like returns, then dont even bother. The cartoon Superman now (jl, jla, public enemy)is more exciting that the real live superman. They need something like that put on film

V for Vendetta was great I'd love to see his take on Superman, though I'm not really sure dark is the right direction for Superman as far the look of the movie, maybe the story but not the art direction. But really I'd rather see the Wachowski's do a Superman, they are awesome at adaptations and their use of color (Speed Racer) is fantastic. They could really bring some new life to Superman cause God knows he needs it.

gosh omg srsly im a huge fan of superman, hardcore always had, always will but i hate reading all these posts about "supermanthis, superman that" hollywood needs to drop superman, its not going anywhere, hollywood says its going green on the project, then they cancel, over and over again, itsstupid and annoying now, hollywood has to STOP juggling superman around in till its acyually done RIGHT, with actually F*****G villains besides LEX.

I've never made a secret of the fact that I think the time is right for a Smallville movie. Let Season Nine be the last season, put Welling in the suit, move it to the big screen, let it grow up by eliminating the cheesiness and giving it better visual effects. It becomes the right recipe for the next Supes movie.

This is not to say, however, that a non-Smallville Superman film couldn't work. As long as they're able to reboot the film franchise in a way that honors the mythology and doesn't completely rape the memory of Christopher Reeves (as Superman Returns did), I'm totally ready to accept Welling as the tv Supes and someone else as the movie Supes.

I have great faith in McTeigue and greater faith in the Wachowskis. I love their reverence for the comic book medium and think McTeigue could finally be the first one to do justice to the last son of Krypton on the silver screen since Donner and Reeves.

Why should movies be so dark these days? Like reality wasn't dark enough. Don't take that **** out on Superman.

Jon Hamm for Superman! He's got the looks, he's got the build, hes got the classic style, he's got the acting ability, and most importantly, he's got the edge that Superman has been lacking.

Obviously Superman is an idealistic boy scout who sees the best in people, but when the chips are down and Supes is up against Darkseid or Braniac, he needs an intensity and power that kind of scares you- because he's essentially a god who chooses to live as a man, and the most powerful superhero in comic history...when he wants to be

Jon Hamm is too old to play Superman.

But I wouldnt mind him taking over from Bale as Batman, as a middle-aged version.

Sam Worthington gets my vote for Supes.

V for vendetta was gr8t and ninja assasins lookin pretty hot two I would much rather the wachowskis het supes but either 1 will do. And for the record supes returns though not gr8t still banked more world wide than batman begins. Now had the film actually been gr8t imagine the money it would have made I saw it 4 xs simply for the plane rescue. And would some of you guys please grow up and realize there not gonig to make it a dark film. When they say that there talking more like jim lee superman for tomorrow dark. Relax and get ready for brainiac

Haven't they lost the origin rights??? They can't do a reboot therefore, right? So they have to carry on with that crap Singer came up?!

WB don't bring back Singer, he kills comic book franchises!!!

Who said Hartnett for Supers, that might not be so bad.

Posted by: Brandon on October 1, 2009 at 07:00:23

Worthington does NOT have a Superman look to him at all.
Brandon Routhe was good. Ne needs a better script and better direction, that's all.

Superman has only worked well recently in animated form. Dump the film idea and let Bruce timm carry on with his DC original movies. better yet, let Timm have a go at doing a big budget animated movie for the big screen

For the new Superman I want the "Dead of Superman" saga. It's the perfect point to reload the Superman story. With Doomsday, superboy, eradicator, Steel and Metallo.Divide it in three part and ta ta taaaa!! The perfect trilogy

Posted by: The Question on October 1, 2009 at 07:22:48

In my opinion, they should wait a while with the superman films. Than come back with a sweeping epic that mixes sci-fi and americana that has no ties to the original series...

Posted by: abitaman on October 1, 2009 at 07:34:28

They can't wait to long on the series, according to the lawsuit they have to start filming in the next year or so?

Posted by: Wolverine_X on October 1, 2009 at 07:36:43

James Caviezel for Superman. And please keep Lex Luthor dead and bring on Doomsday.

Posted by: Honest Fan on October 1, 2009 at 07:38:12

I too believe it is time for Smallville to come to the large screen. The show has an audience, and over the years EVERYONE has seen at least a few episodes. Granted the 'cheesyness' is, at times, more than I can stomach... and the teen 'soap opera' stuff. However, Welling is very good, and has matured over the years to become a believable Superman. What could he be with really good writing? And by the way,... if you don't think Durance isn't the hottest Lois Lane ever, and the best acted Lois Lane ever, then something is wrong with you.
I think people put down actors when they are involved in poorly written scripts. These actors are actually very good, and with a decent script - the movie could build on the Smallville mythos and be... 'super'.

Posted by: Wolverine_X on October 1, 2009 at 07:40:32

They should do a Superman Death saga. A three movie part beginning with the destruction of Metropolis by Doomsday. That would be great. And they should bring the Eradicator ans an alternate Superman.

Posted by: Wolverine_X on October 1, 2009 at 07:41:57

Smallville should end. The guy is a sort of Superboy and the fact is he will never appear with the Superman suit because of the rights.
