Routh's Superman Contract Has Expired
July 5, 2009
Superman Returns star Brandon Routh recently told Omelete (via ThinkMcFlyThink.com) that his contract to star in a sequel has expired, but that if they were to call again, he would go back to the character without thinking twice. Other than that, Routh said he does not know anything about the status of the possible project.

Ah, poor guy. Landing the role of Superman has to be the most incredible feeling, and then to have this happen? poop.
I don't think he was a great fit for Superman the first time around, but that could have been the awkwardness of the script. He did pretty good as Kent though. I'd be willing to see him in another Superman movie, but if they go in a radically different direction I can see them saying they need a new Supes so the audience doesn't get confused and link Returns with the new effort.

Routh did a good job in the job. Would have liked to see him do something other than just lift stuff.

I meant "did a good job in the role."

The longer it takes to make a new Superman movie, the more likely it is to be a reboot with a totally new cast. Henry Cavill would be great as the next Superman!

Well I'm sure we all knew by now that the next Superman movie would not be a Returns sequel and therefore would almost surely recast anyways.
I personally liked Routh's performance. It was one of the highlights of the disapointing film. But I do think a there is a need to recast in order to make clear there is no ties to Returns. I would like to see someone who resembles Supes from the comics a bit more. A big guy like Tom Welling makes a better Clark/Superman. Too bad Welling doesn't have the acting chops to pull off the lead role in a major motion picture and using the Smallville actor would cause the same problems as using the Returns actor.
The next Superman actor is out there somewhere. DC and Warners should start looking now.

Wow. That kinda sucks that the contract expired. I don't think SR showed what he really could do. But oh, well. I just hope they put the new Superman movie on the fast track cuz we wanna believe a man can fly again, dammit!!!!

Brandon Routh was wonderful as Superman. I hope he comes back for a new movie.
Posted by: George on July 5, 2009 at 02:45:58
Good. They need someone that can act and look the part. And they need to reboot to get away from the Donnor films. They were good for their time when I was younger, but you have to really step up to the plate now. Returns was horrible IMO. Routh's weak acting got him booted off my wife's soap opera.

Routh was lame..and so was Superman Returns.
Posted by: Armin S. on July 5, 2009 at 02:56:04
@ George. u think he was bad? go watch Smallville, it makes Brandon look like academy award.

The problem was Routh was cast to play Christopher Reeve in an outdated mythos.
The suspension of belief was not about Kal-el's abilities, it was about how the hell he couldn't have known he had a kid.
Sometimes I wonder if DC purposefully screws this character up.
You can say what you will about Frank Miller's take on Superman in TDK & TDKR but he seemed to have a firm understanding that no one can effectively write Superman.

Brandon Routh was awesome, and he has/had the potential to be a great Superman. He has the look and the sincerity needed as well as the physique (but he could add on more muscle if need be). I hope Warner gets their act together. "Returns" wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. Just ask Chris Nolan how he would do it.

Routh was a really good Clark Kent, he had the mannerisims and speech of a mild mannered man and had the script been a more action oriented then he probably would have been a good Superman. Shame he might not get the chance to prove he can be Clark Kent AND Superman.

I would love to see Routh get another crack at Supes. He never got the chance to make the role his own; instead they just had him do his best Chris Reeve imitation. Plus, Routh's buffed the frak up since then.

D-MAN, looks like you are outnumbered with your one negative comment. You have the nerve and ardasity to disrespect Brandon Routh he is one of leading new male stars in action films, drama and so forth. He, even got to meet Christian Bale at the Teen Choice Awards or regular wards awarding Christian Bale for his role as Batman in Batman Begins. Brandon Routh received a Teen Choice Award for his role as Superman in "Superman Returns". Brandon Routh's contract should be renewed I think that was wrong to just expire his contract without talking to him about the future Superman reboot sequels. I don't think the cast should be totally changed Eva Marie Saint, Kevin Spacey, Sam Huntington, Frank Langella and Parker Posey are great stars. Kate Bosworth can be replaced with Rachel McAdams, Eliza Dushku, Megan Fox and Chloe Sevigny.

Superman Returns was good the first time they made it.... in 1978 and called it Superman: The Movie And for crying out loud!!!! You have 70 years worth of stories out there to adapt, quick doing the same movie and pick someone other than Lex Luther for the villian.

D-MAN I also, forgot to mention Brandon Routh also received a Saturn or more awards for Superman Returns because, it was nominated for Saturn awards by director, Bryan Singer and 10 Golden Globe Nominations. Although, disappointing to a degree still made DC Comics, Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures look good now they just have to get Batman 3 up and running and Superman will soar again on the big-screen. I heard comments about Tom Welling being considered for Superman on the big-screen not a good idea because Tom Welling although a good actor can't be out Brandon Routh. Brandon Routh has television and some film experience he is working on Dylan Dog and will star with Kieran Culkin in "Scott Pilgrim" in 2010 or later.

“Superman Returns” was nothing more and nothing less than a love-letter to Richard Donner. The film was a rehashing of his outdated “Superman,” and Singer’s film is essentially a really expensive fan film that killed the cinematic Superman for yet an entire generation. I mean, 20 years worth of anticipation, a $204 million dollar budget, legions of fans, and they still screwed it up?! Wow! Kate Bosworth was bland, boring, and horrendous as Lois. That kid, forgot his name, as Jimmy was pathetic. Langella as Perry White was a lifeless imitation of a revered character, and the son, the stupid son was such a bland, and scary looking creature. I mean, he never blinked, acted too much like an idiot, even for a five-year-old, and was totally unlikable. This movie tarnished Superman for a generation.
And the thing about it that really angers me is that Singer, the self-proclaimed “Superman Fan” did more harm to Superman than goon. In Summer 2005, he went to Comic-Con boasting about how he “knew” the Superman legend and was going to make a great Superman film. What we got was a shoddy product. Like a car or door-to-door salesman, Singer acted like a con-artist, pitching his product to us, gaining our trust, and then dumping a worthless piece of garbage in our laps. We were duped by this con-artist. He didn’t care for Superman, and chose to ignore any and all post-crisis comic books. The only exposure this con-artist had to Superman was to Donner’s outdated, and somewhat campy film.
And let’s not forget the millions of plot-holes in “Superman Returns.” I mean, how the hell could Superman lift a damn kryptonite island, let alone an island in the first place albeit with a kryptonite shard still stuck in him?! Well, I’ve had it with this film and here we are three years later and this film is dead and buried and has not lasted the test of time. It had already faded away. Good.

Superman Returns had many failings...
Brandon Routh was not one of them.
landing the role of Superman is a dream job, sadly Bryan Singer made it into a nightmare.
Hopefully Routh will find another role to make his own.. Hopefully without some numbnuts director out on a sabotage mission.

As far as Brandon Routh goes he was ok I just wish that Singer would have made Brandon make the role his own instead of retreading Christopher Reeve's Superman.
I also disagree with Richard's statement about no one can effectively write Superman.
I thought Grant Morrison did a fantastic job writing Superman as a genuine force for good. I'm not the biggest Supes fan but All Star Superman definitely made me appreciate the character and why he needs to exist.

Although I am a huge fan of the show Smallville, I believe the series should end after this season. The writers have incorporated EVERY major villain, (and I mean every major villain) into the show and unless they somehow bring Lex Luthor back, the fans will begin to lose interest.
With that being said, I am still a big fan and supporter of the job Tom Welling has done with Clark Kent and wouldn't mind seeing him take over as the next Superman in the movie franchise. He has the look, build and charisma of the Superman we have come to know and love. What do you think?
Posted by: mojojackson on July 5, 2009 at 03:54:13
Thank you, God! Perhaps hopes for a great 21st century Superman franchise aren't completely dashed!

Also, chomos can stay out of it.
