Brandon Routh on a Darker Superman
October 30, 2008
IESB.net caught up with Superman Returns star Brandon Routh, who has a role in Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and asked about the "Dylan Dog" comic book adaptation Dead of Night (Routh says they start filming in mid-January) and possibly making the next "Superman" film darker. Here's a clip on the latter:
I don't know, I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature. And that's now what people what to see. Like Brainiac or something like that, a situation when the villain is...

Superman is not a dark character...please dont ruin him =[ ...
But i will be glad to see a more realistic Superman world...The tone in Superman is a bit too light...in real life things arent THAT BRIGHT.

I agree, just stop making Luthor be the villain behind every damn movie and bring in someone who can level a building with Superman's face..I doubt they'd go as far as Doomsday but hell, at this point I'd even vote for someone like Lobo over Lex Luthor, I'm sick of him now...

Brandon Routh is my hero and is on the right track... the end.

He's absolutley right.
Supes should NOT be dark and brooding(that's Batman personality) Supes should be inspirational to people to do good.
Seems like Rougth has a better grasp on the character than Warner Bros. do.
I hope they let him be Supes again in the sequel. He was the best thing about Superman Returns

This is one of the reasons why I liked the choice of Brandon Routh as Superman. He really gets the character. Superman isn't dark, he's hopeful, inspiring, determined. Unfortunately he was stuck in bad movie and given little opportunity to shine. I want to see Routh in a re-boot. First?

they really need to stop using Lex Luthor as a villain as it never shows Superman using his real power to stop him...as for the first post...well done

"bring in someone who can level a building with Superman's face"
Well said!
No way they can do Darkseid. Too much to try to explain.

@Killall
You are such a loser and never contribute a thing to these boards more than bashing people who say "first", you're even more irritating than they are, at least they get something out of it (What it is I don't know) but all you succeed in doing is raising your own blood pressure over something so trivial while at the same time making yourself look like an even bigger loser for trolling the boards waiting for someone to say it...
I would never try to defend them but you are truly pathetic...

Uh... I was in the second film... I could level a building in Superman's face.
Kneel.

Zod: outstanding. Well done.

No, Superman is a light in a dark world. It's not like Anakin Skywalker, or Batman who teeter on the edge. Superman has always been a character that has kept himself in check. Make it a darker movie, darker villian, and yes, higher stakes. That's why Superman II was so successful. It wasn't about just saving Lois Lane, it was about saving the world from a greater threat. I would like to see more Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor though. It would be cool to see Darkseid or Brainiac. Or maybe if they want to bring darkness into it Show us a Superman Batman Movie!!!

Very true Zod, the problem is you didn't (Probably budget constraints and a lack of cgi..lol) and Luthor was still very prevalent in that film. I thought about that before I posted, but I knew someone would mention "you"

I for one enjoyed Superman Returns, I thought it was great how they introduced a new twist with him having a kid, and I also thought it was as dark as it could get.
I hope the reboot keeps Routh on board. I thought he was perfect.

I am happy to hear that Brandon Routh is talking about a darker Superman, not in the sense of a darker image but a vigilante personality like Batman. I have seen Superman like this in Jeph Loeb and Michael Turner's Batman/Superman comic series. the Dylan Dog movie should be good a cross between Kypto and Underdog which was a blockbuster film. As, far as him being in Kevin Smith's Zack and Mira make a Porno that is dusgusting for Kevin to be involved, in something like that and cast Brandon Routh in that garbage too. Brandon, Please turn that mess down you are a married man and shouldn't cause conflict between you and your soulmate that is not what covenant is about. Dead Of The Night, another Brandon Routh project sounds like a link to Dead To Rights a video game blockbuster. Oh!!! Well

I didn't level a building in his face... simply because I didn't want to.
I do what I want.
You do what I want.
Kneel before me.

Zod's been sipping the kool aid too...

I'm glad to hear his opinion on the next superman film. I've always knew someone agreed with me. Maybe the filmmakers will take that into consideration. If anything, the next villain has to be, either metallo, or brainiac.
Stick to what richard donner did first, and bryan singer continued in "returns".
If not, maybe mark millar's take on blue boy's screen persona might be cool.

So i guess this means they're actually bringing routh back?... so, this next superman movie is gonna blow, correct? bummer...
If they bring him back, and he can prove me wrong, i'll change my mind and stand correct, until then...

I couldn't agree more with those above who think that Routh has "got it," and that Lex Luthor needs to NOT be in the film. Certainly Zod and his pals had the ability to level a building with Superman's face, but they didn't. In fact, other than the fight in the subway and sewers that we didn't even see, they didn't do much damage at all.
I have no problem with a "remake" of Zod, or bringing in Braniac or any of the big hitters, but I, for one, really want to see the big hitting! I think most of us want a slugfest, with major Metropolis damage.
Please, no more land grabs, lame clone villains, or comedians relegated to mediocre power grabs. Bring on a big fight, and let the man in red and blue kick serious butt!

Hopefully, Singer will discard the Returns storyline, having gotten his love letter to Donner out of the way and just make a kick ass Superman film.
If they don't use Brainiac, they could bring in Metallo...manufactured by Luther, but has to put on his green and purple powersuit (Finally!) and try to kick Supes @ss!

Let Tim Burton Direct! We'd have Johnny Depp play superman, Helena Bonham Carter play Lois Lane, and Jack Skellington play Lex Luther! That would be wicked dark!

LoL... love it.
Brandon Routh was a better Superman than Christopher Reeves. *Gasp* Yes, I just said that.
Quite frankly, Routh better personified the role. Perhaps he was a little less... dense? than a Kent/Kal-El should be. But all in all, persona, looks, and acting ability... he is a better Superman than Reeves could have ever been.
Posted by: Jeff on October 30, 2008 at 17:15:35
Oh... and Singer probably won't be directing this film. Especially with Warner Bros. love affair with Mark Millar.
Posted by: Clark on October 30, 2008 at 17:16:43
I am glad to hear Brandon's thinking is in line with my own. Frankly, at the end of the day, WB owns the character and is going to do with it what they will... If they feel they NEED to make a darker film, then fine, so be it. But this is the way to go, make the subject matter darker, increase the peril, put the world at risk and bring a truly evil villain to the table. You can still have Superman be the guiding light and make a dark film. I think this is probably much more what they have in mind, rather then this kneejerk assumption that Supes is going to dress in all black and dance to disco music.
