Mark Millar on His 8-Hour Superman Epic
Source:Empire Online, Ken
October 29, 2008

Empire Online talked to Mark Millar (Wanted, upcoming Kick-Ass) more about his proposed "Superman" epic. Here are several clips from the article:

Mark has been working closely with a 'big-Hollywood action director' – who he refuses to name at this stage – on a pitch for what he is calling the Magnum Opus of Superman stories. His idea is for an 8-hour saga, split into 3 films to be released a year apart, in a Lord of the Rings fashion.

"I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

This sounds pretty awesome.

meh, I don't know. Do we really need an epic spanning his entire life? Just give me a good movie, and I'll be happy. This, I don't know.

Posted by: Logan on October 29, 2008 at 14:19:15

sounds dumb they should do the Doomsday storyline and call it a day..o yea first!!!!

Posted by: Nafai on October 29, 2008 at 14:19:37

it'll never happen

Posted by: kane on October 29, 2008 at 14:20:20

sounds very interesting..

Posted by: Dave on October 29, 2008 at 14:20:31

Why?

Posted by: Mozz on October 29, 2008 at 14:21:42

Wow! An epic s the right word for this, BUT...at the end, its all over red rover! No more Superman films!

Posted by: nate on October 29, 2008 at 14:23:17

agreed not gonna happen. Not with a franchise like superman. Not the last part anyways. They'll never tell the end of the story. though that's not a bad idea, it's kind of a rip-off of "the fountain".

Posted by: Your Mom on October 29, 2008 at 14:23:44

I'd watch it and even pay full price at the theater and not wait for cheap night.

Posted by: Frerezar on October 29, 2008 at 14:23:58

sounds like an original take on a superman movie, wich is better than anythig that has ben donebefore with him. Sounds better than just getting a single storyline from a comicbook just to please fanboys

Posted by: John on October 29, 2008 at 14:24:18

Doomsday needs to come before any of this. Once they do a good movie for once then I might be OK with this.

Posted by: Ken on October 29, 2008 at 14:24:20

I think puctuating as a serial, a story like this with villians such as Brainiac and Darkseid, instead of a three-tiered story arc would better suit the franchise!

Showing the last man of earth as the sun goes red could be done as glimpses of the future for him. But why cap the end of the franchise with it?

We also would like to have JLA!

Posted by: Dave on October 29, 2008 at 14:25:01

Just do a Superman movie with some heavy hitting villain like Brainiac or Doomsday or Both, and leave it alone. We don't need to see Superman in a "Last Man on Earth" scenario with the sun about to explode, it's just superfluous.

Why one epic? can't we get a good Superman movie with a potential for sequels? Millar is such a narcissist. I liked Red Son but after getting praise for it he just seems to be on a crusade to do Superman his way instead of something fans(kids to adults) can enjoy. What kind of downer would it be to see a film where Superman is the last being on earth, the sun goes red,he loses his powers and the sun goes into supernova thus killing earth and Superman?(I presume this would happen but if any scientists out there want to help with this)

Posted by: mike1010 on October 29, 2008 at 14:25:33

This would be a cool trilogy but that ending would be a major downer. To outlive everyone you have known and cared about and to live on for hundreds of thousands or millions of years till the sun turns red, that would not be the feel good movie of the year.

Posted by: Andrew on October 29, 2008 at 14:26:41

cant wait for more superman, sounds awesome!

Posted by: Robie on October 29, 2008 at 14:26:42

I like the idea of 3 movies a year apart. But from what this sounds like, we may need 5 or six movies to tell. I mean spanning from a thousand years in the past all the way to the end of time in only 8 hours...

Just give me 3 great movies about Superman, and don't make him "dark"

Posted by: abe on October 29, 2008 at 14:28:40

the good thins with this proposed ending, if the movies suck then we know there won't be another one! :)
i'd like to hear more info about this, and hope also that the krypton portion doesn't just retell information the general public already know, and have already seen on the big screen.

Posted by: M on October 29, 2008 at 14:29:36

"I think it would put me to sleep.....
Just focus on getting 1 Superman movie right - then go from there."

I'm going to have to agree cause if the first in this "magnum opus" sucks then they're just going to either waste their time and money doing the rest or just not finish it, which would be dumb.

I have a love hate relationship with Supe's but I'd love to just have him done right at least once on the big screen.

Posted by: Iwant2playagame on October 29, 2008 at 14:30:14

See how bad they want to make this Franchise right. I love this concept. I hated Returns because it was so grounded and soft. No villians no plot no Superman. That was not Superman in that movie. With Superman you have to get the whole Universe involved. Thats how its always been in the comics. Spread him out. I like where Millar wants to go with this. Bring Supes back as a A-list hero because right now people dont care about him. Especially since Smallville went down hill. They have no idea what they are doing with that project right now.

Posted by: Winter Soldier on October 29, 2008 at 14:31:34

EPIC

Could be phenomenal if done right. I agree with Robbie. Superman is a character that doesn't need darkness, but does need depth. He's not just "the big blue boy scout" in my mind. He's Earth's greatest hero, and also it's most lonely.

And I only add this because I am at work right now and listening to it in my office - KEEP JOHN WILLIAMS' SCORE!

Posted by: Frerezar on October 29, 2008 at 14:31:47

our sun would not likely go supernova. it probaly will die as a brown dwarf and loose most of its magnetic pull so the outhermost planets might slip away. earth would just become inhabitable, thus killing superman without his powers

PS now that i think about it , i does sound a bit emo

Sounds good, but I just wish that they (WB) would, if they really want to reboot the Superman franchise, and center the story around the Doomsday story. This could be an epic type movie trilogy. As much as I liked Brandon Routh as Superman you will have to get rid of him first. We all know that it was successfully done with Batman. Get rid of Bryan Singer, I like the guy as a director, but I think that he is over hyped too much. I really believe Zack Snyder could do a Superman franchise justice and give us, fans, what we want to see.
