Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

August 22, 2008
Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:
Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."
The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:
With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.
Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.
The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.
We'll let you know as soon as the studio has announced its plans for future DC movies.

its about time a dark superman is what we need
Posted by: Anjow on August 22, 2008 at 11:10:07
oh God........NO.
Superman should NOT be dark. That's not what was wrong with the old franchise. He was just BORING.
You need to pose a threat to him and make him use all his talents. Have 10 problems going on all at once! Someone who can fight him.
And if The Flash isn't a "Action/Adventure/Comedy" I'm gonna be pissed.
Dark works for Batman cuz he's Batman. That's what sets him apart from the rest of the heroes. He's an Anti-hero. Superman is a Hero Hero.
Ugh.......watch your step WB....this is a dangerous game you're playing.

I glad they finally have a plan. That means they aren't waiting on singer and his crew to make the film. Though the "SAME BROODING TONE" worries me a little. Batman is brooding, Superman,Flash,Green lantern,Wonder woman, are all not brooding.

Ugh... They want to make all the film's darker... WB just doesn't get it do they? Then need to get rid of all the yes men and come up with something on their own. Stop copying every other successful film style! Make the style in line with the character! Is Metropolis a dirty dark city like Gotham, NO! So don't make it dark! Idiots...

They should just give superman a rest. Revamping him is just exhausting

Tom Welling is the man for the job hands down, does anyone else agree? He's played Clark Kent for 8 years now let him be his alter-ego on the big screen!!

Not every character requires a 'dark' movie.

superman isnt a brooding character.... but if you give him a strong enough villian to play off of... and make him have to choose how he handles things for the safety and welfare of others, it will work. put him up against doomsday or darksied and let them handle the the dark tones.... and let supermans light shine thoriugh.

Not every superhero movie should be as dark and brooding as Batman. Superman should, by nature, have a more lighthearted, nostalgic feel. T

It's about time they looked into making a Green Lantern movie.

"Going dark" worked for Batman because he always had a dark edge to him. Superman is not a dark character - he's the light, he represents good, he's naive, his morality and will is unshakable. Look at spider-man 1 & 2. Both did very well without being dark - because they stayed (relatively) true to the character.
And for the love of god . . . do we have to sit through yet another origin story? sigh

I loved Superman Returns. What I find sad is when a character is treated seriously, there's just disappointment from fans. Look at Hulk. The first one was a really deep film which made Hulk work as a movie but the fans didn't like it. So the sequel was a no brainer average film. The next Superman will be the same.
You can't make every comic character 'dark'. Batman works because he's supposed to be like that - you can't make Superman the same.

Awesome!
A more serious and mature Superman would be better. I think we're all tired of an inexperienced Superman. We want the Man of Steel.

I will never give a crap about a Wonder Woman movie, no matter how "dark" they try to make it. There's just something about a woman running around in wristbands & star-spangled panties that is waaaay to lame for me. :)

Ok, Warner Bros still doesn't get it. TDK worked because Batman's character is DARK!! Superman doesn't need to be darker in tone in order for it to be successful, he justs needs to kick ass and fight villains!! This goes for the flash, wonder woman and whatever else they're looking to produce. These execs are idiots. Hire comic book writers who know the damn characters they helped create and just sit back and reap the benefits of the properties they hold. Is it just me or am i alone in thinking this?

'dark' Superman movie ? As in the villains?
cause Superman is a blue and red boyscout even in the Justice League animated series and all recent incarnations. The worst interpretations of Superman have been the dark serious ones.
Posted by: Film Ninja on August 22, 2008 at 11:15:47
The only way a "dark" Superman would work is if Braniac is introduced and goes all Terminator over Metropolis. There you retarded studio execs, I just wrote your script for you! I'd love to be able to round up all the "first!" fa..ots in a room and crack 'em in the face. That crap wasn't cool on AICN and it damn sure isn't cool here. Losers

Here we go.
Don't be afraid, DC.
Even Blue Bettle can make for a good superhero movie.

"youve changed things ....forever....theres no going back.." (joker)
Perfectly said...seems WB has finally seen the light thx to TDK....bout time........time to get serious!!!!
