Frank Miller's The Spirit hits DVD and Blu-ray Disc on Tuesday, April 14th (full specs here) and Superhero Hype! has your first look at a clip from the "Green World" special feature.

Adapted from Will Eisner's comic book series, The Spirit is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; Lorelei (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and Morgenstern (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.

Then of course, there's Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She's the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?

This movie was as bad as Max Payne or whatever it's called.

I listened to the poor reviews when it was in the theatre...I saw it recently....and, sure..it was far from a great flick..but it was very entertaining to say the least.

This movie was the single most true to Miller's comics in tone and visual style, and it was an amazing movie, too! I decided after my fifth time seeing it that anyone who didn't like it either has never read a comic or is just an idiot. I think I'd stick to that now. People don't seem to understand the stylized acting and visuals, and apparently that makes them unable to enjoy the movie. I can't wait for Miller's next film!!

Cannot Wait for this DVD... The Spirit was one great film... Too bad all the fanboys bashed it so badly...

Posted by: ggreg on April 10, 2009 at 11:12:33

Yeah, it may be true to Millers comics but it needed to true to Will Eisners. The tone and feel of those two guys are about as far apart as it's possible to be.

Uhhh yeah to all those who approve of this movie.. ITS NOTHING LIKE THE COMIC. it sort of tried to be like the comic but then miller had to add his personal touch which made it fall out of place. It would have worked if he stuck to one style but he didnt, and in the reason was why it failed. Same thing went for Rob Zombies halloween.. you can either stick with the originial with a remake or totally change it which is useless because it wouldnt be a remake.. but the point is the spirit was horrible an this is coming from a guy who owns the first issue of the spirit. Nuff said!

now i have been a Frank Miller Fan For a While Now. my Favorite work of his would be "The Dark Knight Returns" and when i heard that he was going to make a film based on one of the Greatest Comic Book Characters of all time (created by the man who mentored Miller) i was gitty like a little girl a Christmas. when i saw the picture it was pure Frank Miller, and thats what i paid for. sure it wasnt the best film in the word and sure they changed a few things from the Source material, but i enjoyed it none the less. Frank Miller reminds me of my Idol Tim Burton. Frank has his own Style and when he is attached to work on something i expect his Style to be put on what ever he is working on. Frank is Frank, and he made an Entertaining Flick. way to go

Since it's on a screen of less size on DVD, will it suck less?

I don't know if there has been a movie that was more of a mess than this turd. It missed the mark on every level. That's a rare feat.

Posted by: matthooper on April 10, 2009 at 11:24:55

There is no way that the people who liked it and say how close in tone to the original it is actually have read the original or have an understanding of the original. It bears little or no resemblance to the original, and Miller's style was completely off the mark for what it was supposed to be.

Look at the First Batman Film. that film had alot of Changes in it (The Joker became Batmans Parents killer for example) but it Captured the Spirit (no pun intended) of Who and What Batman is. similar in a way to this Picture. it wasnt the Spirit entirely, but it Captured the Essence. thats my Opinion and i'm sticking to it.

Bit off topic but how do u get forum access made a account month or so ago and it still says waiting for admin to grant privileges when I try to make a post

If your gonna buy this movie, make sure you stop buy your local dealer and get whatever drug you will need to fully enjoy this movie.

Posted by: browncoat on April 10, 2009 at 12:15:51

Anyone who didn't like this movie obviously never read the books. I'm not going to argue that you're stupid or don't have any taste, but you are watching the film out of reference. It was amazing.

Posted by: browncoat on April 10, 2009 at 12:27:16

Also, those who felt it was off from the source material...YOU actually are stupid.

Posted by: ur momma on April 10, 2009 at 12:33:27

this was one of the worst movies ever..period..i dont care how close it was to any comic or book...i would rather watch the paint on the wall dry or grass growing than sit through this again...

Posted by: Jason on April 10, 2009 at 12:37:28

if this is close to the source material, then im really glad ive never read it. Visually it was pretty amazing, but it was one of the top 5 worst movies I've ever seen in theater. and I've seen quite a few movies so thats saying something. When it got to the nazi part?? that was the final nail in the coffin for me. Now i wouldnt see it again unless it comes with a date with Eva Mendes.

Posted by: Duggernaut on April 10, 2009 at 13:28:59

It doesnt matter how bad anyone says it is. I will always be a sucker and watch it when someone gives me a copy. I do listen to the reviews before going to the box office.

Of course I still have copies of the marine, max pain and the ff2 unopened.

I have this argument with my roomate everyday...why does the film adaptation have to follow EXACTLY as the comic? Plenty of films have deferred from the original source material and ended up staking a claim as their own...Lord of the Rings and The Shining to name a few. I thought the visuals were great, the acting was campy and just enough "over-the-top" to keep my attention. I actually dug the noir feel and while the plot is a little overextended I found the pacing to be linear and cohesive. Overall, not the greatest film ever but one that I enjoyed watching and will occasionally return to my DVD player.

wow...fanboys vs movie enthusiasts....I didnt get a chance to see this in the theatre but Im gonna buy it if at least rent it when it comes out. I personally think that some independent comic company should have rereleased the older spirit stories to get todays audience prepared for the film...also marketing for the movie was totally off and the release of the film during the holidays was the final nail. I see the Spirit as a forgotten character who disappeared from a golden age of comics and noir film and was brought back in a time of dark and dismal comic book characters and settings. The film might be garbage to many...but it will end o up as a cult favorite for others. Also, I wanted to see the Ebony White character make it in the film but had to accept Miller's less than luster reason why he wasnt included. I didnt get what I wanted so my other fan brethern should tone down their gripes for the film. It might be ridiculous but it could also be fun. Anything's better than SPEED RACER or DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION.

Easily the worst film of 2008. I'm a huge Will Eisner fan and was intrigued with the visual style of this film when I first saw the trailers. Now my expectations were pretty low going into this and I was STILL amazed at how bad it was. I really don't need to subject myself to that again. Ever.

Posted by: Sol on April 10, 2009 at 16:20:30

"The Spirit" never played in the second-run houses in my area. Was the movie just so bad that the three dollar cheapie market didn't want to waste their effort? Normally, the weakest pieces of crap still play these places after they fail miserably at the first-run theatres.

Posted by: Denny Colt on April 10, 2009 at 16:58:43

the film was true to franks style. which is basically an overtly dark version of eisners style. this film didnt hit the mark for me because i expected eisners the spirit, a witty ''human'' dectective, with an iron will. darwyn cooke is the only person to do the spirit justice since eisner.
