Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that Frank Miller's The Spirit hits DVD and Blu-ray Disc on April 14th. Here are the specs:

From Frank Miller, the creator of 300 and Sin City comes the re-awakening of a hero unlike any other – The Spirit. Adapted from the legendary comic book series created by Comic Book Hall of Famer Will Eisner, The Spirit fuses masterful storytelling with brilliant CGI graphics to sweep viewers into a stylized world of action, adventure, danger and romance. It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own bid for immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront ... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), a calculating and driven vixen; Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; Lorelei (Jaime King), an angel of Death; and Morgenstern (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. Then of course, there’s Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him? In the vein of Batman Begins and Sin City, The Spirit takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

The Spirit Blu-ray Disc and 2-disc Special Edition DVD contain thrilling bonus materials including multiple featurettes, an alternate storyboard ending with cast voiceovers and feature film audio commentary by the screenwriter/director and producer. They both also feature a standard definition digital copy of the film. The Blu-ray Disc will contain an additional featurette not found on the DVD. The Spirit Blu-ray also marks the debut of the first LIONSGATE LIVE™ enabled title for the studio. LIONSGATE LIVE™ is a unique BD Live based menu system that delivers updateable exclusive content such as commentaries, games, ringtones, wallpapers, trailers and much more via a series of on-screen notifications and widgets. In addition, LIONSGATE LIVE™ will continually notify users to any new features across all Lionsgate BD Live titles. LIONSGATE LIVE™ will be available on select theatrical titles throughout 2009. The Blu-ray Disc also features Molog, which allows users to insert and animate shapes, text, audio and other graphics right into the film as well as post “blogs” about the film to share with other registered MOLOG™ users. The standard one-disc DVD of The Spirit will include a Widescreen and Full Screen version of the film and the theatrical trailer.

It's sad that so many hated this movie. I'm such a huge fan of the comic, I wanted so desperately to like this movie too. However, my moniker is "Honest Fan" and so I must be honest: This movie was a bit of a dissappointment. I understand, probably better than most that aren't familiar with the source material, that The Spirit is supposed to be 'campy' and over-the-top. But I also understand that the criminals of the Spirit comics were what made them so fun. Best of all, The Octopus was cool, BECAUSE YOU NEVER SAW HIS FACE! Poor Samuel J. - the guy was just plain annoying in this horribly written role. The casting was actually great - I have no problem with that, or the acting, or the special effects, or the editing, or the way it was filmed - all of that was neat. It's just the story, and the overall feel of Sam's character and those stupid bald guys was just... lame. Anyway,... I'll not be purchasing this DVD, and if I'm not (the biggest Spirit fan I know) then who the he!! is?

i thought this movie was different still. interesting and creative. it somewhat touched my artistic side poetically, artistically and creatively...y'kno what i mean? i know ppl got their different opinions and i can understand why ppl didn't like it...that i'll admit. not the greatest movie, things it too though...i didn't read the comic and had no expectations of it coming into the theatres. anyway...looking forward to the wolverine movie coming up regardless. respect.

Posted by: Example on February 2, 2009 at 13:10:26

Worth a Netflix rental to see it on Blu-Ray, and that's about it.

Posted by: A sphincter says what !?!? on February 2, 2009 at 13:10:27

If it was bad in the theatre...why such a hullabaloo about it....seeing what made it suck isn't worth extra bux.

I think whoever runs this site was probably paid to try and hype this movie. If u just read all the posting on this,it definitely feels like some promo dollars exchanged hands. That long ass description of the dvd just nailed it for me....

Cr*p repackaged as shiny new glistening cr*p, is still cr*p!!!!

Posted by: don juan on February 2, 2009 at 13:21:46

this movie was a waste of my life i could've been doing something else like actually watching an entertaining movie, this movie makes comic book movies look bad it should've never came out, frank miller should stick to what he knows cause hopefully ny now he has realized he is no director.

Posted by: Prof. Zoom on February 2, 2009 at 13:28:12

I haven't seen the movie but the cast looked
incredible. It was that bad,Huh? That's a shame
because the comics were "classics". I am still
a fan of the books no matter what the movie is
like. Sounds like a candidate for a cheap rental!

This will be at the bottom of the wal-mart 2 for 9.99 bin within a month. This movie was very very bad and i can't see why anyone will want to spend a dime on it. I walked out an hour into this pieceo**** they call a movie. If anything they can keep their dvd and send me my 12 bux back.

Posted by: Spc Nut on February 2, 2009 at 13:50:30

You can find all of this in the DVD bargain bin of your local Wal-Mart!

@LEEE777

Yeah, but the difference between The Spirit and Sin City is that Sin City was actually a fantastic movie.

Posted by: Prof. Zoom on February 2, 2009 at 14:08:49

Thanks for the input LEEE777! I liked Miller's
Sin City in the books and I thought the Movie
was ok too! I really liked the darkness of the
whole thing! I'm sure there will be a lot of
people who disagree with me. I really enjoyed
how "different" a movie it was.

One of the top 10 worst movies I've ever seen. Major flop!

Posted by: James on February 2, 2009 at 14:28:40

I really don't understand all the hating this movie is getting. I loved it and i'm gonna buy the DVD!

Posted by: Baconface The Destroyer on February 2, 2009 at 14:35:01

i know ALOT of people hated this movie and have now come to resent Frank Miller, but i gotta say, i liked it

it was alot of fun to watch and i think Gabriel Macht did a terrific job as The Spirit, and its great to see Dan Lauria in anything

it definately was a very strange movie and definately wasnt everybodys cup of tea, but i could see it becoming somewhat of a cult classic down the road

as for Miller, i am a huge fan and supporter of him, his film and comic work (i actually like "All Star Batman and Robin") are both very entertaining and i cant wait to see what he does next (Buck Rogers! woo hoo!)

also, its kind of refreshing to see someone in Hollywood not give a damn about what the public or anyone thinks of him and do the work simply because he loves it.

Keep on keepin on, Mr. Miller! cant wait for Buck Rogers!

Christ Almighty but this movie sucked HARD! I know that the comic book was a bit campy and over-the-top, but the movie was just plain BAD. I was so incredibly tempted to walk out, but I had spent $7 after all, and I kept hoping something would start to improve. It never did.

I won't be buying the dvd when it comes out. When it inevitibly ends up in the $5 bargain bin, I still won't be getting it. In fact, if they gave it away it still would not be worth watching again.

What Miller should do is work with DC to produce "The Dark Knight Returns" for their direct-to-dvd animated feature line. THAT would be cool!
