SHH! EXCL: Frank Miller's Update on 300 Spin-Off & Sin City 2
Source:Edward Douglas
December 13, 2008

Earlier today, Superhero Hype! had a chance to sit down for fifteen minutes with the one and only Frank Miller, creator of "Sin City" and "300," to talk about his upcoming movie based on Will Eisner's The Spirit. While he had a lot to say about that highly anticipated project, the questions continue to loom over some of the other projects based on his works, including possible sequels for successful movies based on Sin City and 300.

With a lot of rumors swirling about a potential sequel or prequel to Zack Snyder's 300, which was based on a standalone graphic novel, some have wondered how involved Miller would be, and if he might write or draw another graphic novel based on the subject matter as basis for another movie. "I've written a story that's not a prequel," he told us. "It's definitely a further story in the Greco-Persian Wars, and it involves some of the same characters but I'm not sure exactly how far along it'll get and again, until it's on a marquee, I don't believe in it."

Last week, we spoke to actor Mickey Rourke about returning as Marv in Sin City 2, and he seemed kind of tentative about spending three hours putting on Marv's make-up, but Miller shared, "He has a pretty big role. I hope Mickey plays it."

And as far as whether Miller might co-direct with Robert Rodriguez again or direct himself, now that he has The Spirit under his belt: "I hope to work with Robert. We're talking it over and trying to work out the mechanics of actually getting it made. It's always tricky with movies. I believe that a movie's going to come out as soon as I see its name on a marquee."

"I'll publish something," he hinted with a smile, when asked whether there might be a "Sin City" or "300" comic or graphic novel out before either movie.

When we spoke to Miller a few years ago, he mentioned wanting to direct a movie based on his series of graphic novels he did with Dave ("Watchmen") Gibbon starring Martha Washington, starting with "Give Me Liberty." Since it's been a few years, we were curious whether that's something he'd still want to do and if he thought it would still work today. "I think Martha Washington is begging to happen," he said when asked how the changing times might affect how people viewed that politically-tinged sci-fi story, especially considering how Zack Snyder intentionally set the forthcoming Watchmen in the '80s. "The thing is that Martha Washington starts in 1995, but it really doesn't kick off until about 2010."

"It's just a matter of finding the right venue, because Martha Washington isn't a movie, it's a series," he continued. "It would have to be like 12 episodes to fit the whole story in. I would not let it be truncated."

We'll have a lot more from our interview with Miller sometime in the next few weeks before The Spirit opens on Thursday, December 25.

Does anyone still care about Frank Miller at this point?

Posted by: iamstill9yeaersold on December 13, 2008 at 21:20:21

What else will you do that's the same as what you've already done awesome godhead Frank Miller?

Just direct the next Spiderman cos that would be too pchawesoome!

****in eh, martha washington. been years since i heard that name but would crap me pants if showtime or hbo were smart enough to pick up on this. limited series on tv is what a lot of this comic book work needs and hopefully the cable companys will pick up on this.

Posted by: prank3281 on December 13, 2008 at 21:28:41

Frank Miller is really great I hope he continues his crusade as director writer and artist!

Posted by: Greg Slaughter on December 13, 2008 at 21:41:05

Marv and Dwight were the showcased characters in Sin City. But, don't get me wrong - Sin City wouldn't have been what it was without some of the other characters.

Hopefully Rourke comes back. The fanbase is going to be very upset without his return... but we all know the source material is strong enough that other people could play Marv and we'd all go see it. -.-

he needs to direct and write(co) the next trilogy of batman movies. for a fresh new view. a lot of people ive spoken to agree!!!!

Posted by: allanbrito on December 13, 2008 at 22:04:05

the only way martha washington would work on the big screen would be if they made 4 movies, each one being an specific chapter. or made a tv series but a good big budget tv series.

Posted by: anders on December 13, 2008 at 22:07:47

ogswiss, talk to new people. While i think miller's skilled the batman movies aren't exactly hurting for a fresh view. If you were saying this after Batman and Robin came out, i'd totally agree though

Miller is still living off of his fifteen minutes of talent?

Posted by: MedicalMogul on December 13, 2008 at 23:10:25

ogswiss, I'd have to stand with anders on his commentary in response to your suggestions. Aside from anders' point alone, Miller said about three months ago that given the opportunity to make a TDKR flick, he'd like to see Stallone in the leading role.

As much as I admire & respect Mr. Miller for his visionary & work, I personally don't want this man anywhere near the Batman franchise!

Case in point, do a search on the web for his draft and treatment for the "short-lived but almost happened" YEAR ONE film that he was collaborating with then-attached director Darron Aronofsky. You'll see what I mean.

for all those who are giving frank miller **** i have one thing to say if it wasnt for frank miller batman would still be campy and not have the edge it has now DKR is a master peice and one of the reasons comics became graphic novels you need to give him his due with out him the world would be a less creative place.

Posted by: UnrealGL on December 14, 2008 at 00:15:21

It's pretty annoying when people say he does the same thing. It's his style. That's evident in the Sin City graphic novels, the 300 graphic novel, as well as his Ronin and Hard Boiled comics. But, it's not like a lot of people would be able to realize that. Oh, and without his Dark Knight Returns, all the directors in Hollywood would still consider Adam West's Batman as the definitive Batman.

Johnny Depp should play Marv

Posted by: ogswiss on December 14, 2008 at 01:01:50

i understand your points of view if thats what he really wanted to do. if he did it right though i think it could be promising...

Posted by: PsyKko on December 14, 2008 at 01:46:05

Jean-claude Van Damme should play Marv.

wouldn't that be something. lol.

Posted by: Jeff De Niro on December 14, 2008 at 01:46:53

Rourke is Marv. He is still recuperating from his iconic performance in The Wrestler. An Oscar nomination will get adrenalin going. Mickey Rourke is tougher than the rest and tougher than makeup. And by the way - when is James Lipton ever going to have Rourke on the Actor's Studio? Rourke is perhaps the only major graduate from the school not invited.

Posted by: unknown on December 14, 2008 at 02:21:24

First off, please no damn re-casting. If Mickey Rourke isn't returning then no Marv. Please! I'm so sick of this Hollywood re-casting crap. It's diminishing to the character & the continuing story of the Sin City world in the film(s). It doesn't matter if the source material is strong or not. This isn't a comic book. This is a film & the profile of the character has already been made through Rourke & changing that would just kill the character let alone just cheapen it & devalue the characterzation. A film should be about quality not quanity.

Sadly, studios & there excutives today don't know the meaning of quality filmmaking & storytelling plus the audiences today would take s*** on a stick if it's delievered right but then at the end of the day find they just got screwed by the studio(s) which does happen especially with the comic book films. Until these studios stop with the re-casting, fast track development, & so on. Comic book films will never be taken seriously. That's what makes Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise so damn great. The re-casting of Katie Holmes was no choice situation because of the timing. Other then that Nolan's Batman franchise has been pretty flawless from a quality stand point.

@ogswiss
Personally, Nolan has delievered the Batman franchise people have wanted. If Miller wanted it after "Batman & Robin" happened then maybe it would be interesting but now that Nolan has taken the helm. Miller's version would just make Batman a joke with Stallone who's days have past long time ago plus he couldn't pull it off. Stallone was never been a good actor by any means but luckly had the Rocky series to keep his acting career a float without that his career would have ended a long time ago & Rambo wouldn't have kept him going long enough without the Rocky series. It would just turn out laughable as him as Batman. If were ever going to see a true "The Dark Knight Returns" film, it will be with Nolan at the helm.

Posted by: unknown on December 14, 2008 at 02:36:46

By the way, I'm talking about the system of the major Hollywood studios not the independent studios who deliever the art house films which are better quality films in terms of storytelling & filmmaking. I'm not saying the major studios don't deliever quality films. It's just seems though they throw more crap like "Don't Mess With The Zohan", "Step Brothers", "Disaster Movie" or so on. But when they deliever films like "Frost/Nixon", "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button", "The Dark Knight", "Iron Man" (the sequel is in question though), & so on. Then it's great to see that. Luckly there are some true filmmakers in the major Hollywood system.

If Frank Miller REALLY wants to make a movie about some of his older graphic novels then 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns' should be the one. Best graphic novel ever in my opinion.

Posted by: wicket on December 14, 2008 at 03:17:31

I more than likely won't take any interest in this movie if rourke is not in it as marv for his character was the most popular one of the first movie and now that bruce willis character isn't coming back I will probably lose complete interest in this movie

Posted by: Noxious on December 14, 2008 at 04:49:59

Its all about HARD BOILED!!!!

Someone has to make Hard Boiled. And NO not the John Woo film.

Hard Boiled all the way

Posted by: MasterElwood on December 14, 2008 at 06:59:37

He should direct a DUKE NUKEM movie !!!!

Posted by: tonamania on December 14, 2008 at 10:12:30

A few points about looking at the recent Spirit teasers on MTV. 1) The movie looks as atrocious as the women look sexy; 2) Proof once and for all that Robert Rodriguez was the one true director on Sin City, no matter what the double billing; 3) Miller as director = complete hack; 4) wondering if Miller's best days as writer are long behind.

In the last year with all the nonsense about Rodriguez's changing projects (thanks alot Rose) and Miller hyping this piece of of trash, I'm now wondering about the quality of a Sin City 2 - for the 1st few years I was begging for it.

And I dig Clive Owen, but Mickey was the heart & soul of SC, and by far his was the most intense story line. I gained a new found respect for the guy after that role, seriously. No Mickey, no movie ticket.
